I'm excited to be back with you

today my name is Jake Thomas I'm one of

the pastors here at Grace City U my wife

and I Courtney she's in the back uh we

recently uh returned from a trip uh to

America where we welcomed our first

child little girl named Olivia who's

going to be making noise at different

points during the service I think so

you'll probably hear her so but we're

excited to be back with everyone today

and get to introduce everybody to Olivia

and welcome her into this church family

uh today we're going to be starting a a

five week sermon series on the Book of

Esther and so before we get started with

that I kind of wanted to give a little

back background um on Esther and where

it begins you might know some of the

like large details of the story of

Esther already you know Esther is a a

Jewish woman she eventually becomes the

queen of Persia and the Lord saves the

Jewish people through Esther but we kind

of need to understand how they got there

in the first place right so uh in order

to understand why Esther and morai are

even in uh Persia in Souza where the

Book of Esther takes place the capital

of the Persian Empire we have to go back

about 150 years to 58 87 BC in 587 BC

the Babylonians actually captured the

kingdom of Judah and when they captured

the kingdom of Judah they exiled the

Jewish people from their Homeland and

they took them back to Babylon several

years later several Kings later you

might remember in the Book of Daniel the

Babylonians are captured or conquered by

the Persians and then under King Cyrus

uh some of the Israelites are allowed to

go back to Jerusalem and they begin to

rebuild Jerusalem under the guidance of

Ezra and

nemiah but this story takes place after

that event so for some reason whatever

reason that is Esther and Mori decided

to stay in Souza when a lot of their

people went back to their Homeland so

they're still living as an exiled

minority uh underneath the the direct

government of their conquerors and

they're treated as a exiled minority

their pre udist their safety is always

in question and so as

we look begin to talk through this story

you're going to see the ways that the

Jewish people are still being persecuted

even though some of them have been

allowed to go back another important

detail is that even though some of the

Jews went back to

Jerusalem they're still

under the rule of the Persian Empire um

so the story of Esther is not just about

God saving a small group of Jews who

still live in Souza the story of Esther

is about how God Saves the entire Jewish

race and why is that important because

as early as Genesis 3:15 God has

promised that a savior will come right

Genesis 3:15 tells us that the serpent

will bite the heel of this savior but

the Savior will crush the Serpent's head

and against later on to to Abraham and

to David God promises that this savior

is going to come from the Jewish people

we know God keeps his promises so in

order for that those promises to be kept

the Jewish people can't be destroyed

he's not going to allow his people to be

destroyed by the Persians by anyone and

so that's kind of where the context of

this story as we as we start to look at

the

text now in this text there are quite a

few difficult names so I want you to

give me a little Grace as we read

through this so let's turn uh to Esther

now in the days of aashis the aashis who

reigned from India to Ethiopia over 127

provinces in those days when King aashis

sat on his Royal throne in Souza The

Citadel in the third year of his Reign

he gave A Feast for all his officials

and servants the army of Persia and

media and the Nobles and governors of

the provinces were before him while he

showed the riches of his Royal glory and

the Splendor and pomp of his greatness

for many days 80 days and when these

days were completed the king gave for

all the people present in Souza The

Citadel both great and small a feasts

lasting for seven days in the court of

the garden of the king's Palace there

were white cotton curtains and violet

hangings fastened with cords of fine

linen and purple to Silver rods and

marble pillars and also couches of gold

and silver on a mosaic pavement of

poery marble mother of pearl and

precious stones drinks were served in

Golden vessels vessels of different

kinds and the Royal wine was lavished

according to the Bounty of the king and

drinking was according to this edict

there is no compulsion but the king had

given orders to all the staff of his

Palace to do as each man desired Queen

vashi also gave A Feast for the women in

the palace that belonged to King

aashis on the seventh day when the heart

of the King was merry with wine he

commanded mumin Biza harbona Biga and

abaga Zar and carcass the seven Unix who

served in the presence of King hasis to

bring Queen vashti before the king with

her royal crown in order to show the

peoples and the princes her beauty for

she was lovely to look at but Queen

vashi refused to come at the King's

Command delivered by the Unix at this

the king became enraged and his anger

burned within

him then the king said to the wise men

who knew the times for this was the

king's proced procedure toward all who

were versed in law and judgment the men

next to him being Cara shethar aditha

tarish Marys Marca and

mukin the Seven princes of Persia and

midia who saw the king's face and sat

first in the Kingdom according to the

law what is to be done to Queen vashi

because she has not performed the

command of King aashis delivered by the

Unix then mukin said in the presence of

the king and the officials not only

against the King has Queen vashi done

wrong but also against all the officials

and all the peoples who are in all the

provinces of King ahasuerus for the

Queen's Behavior will be made known to

all women causing them to look at their

husbands with contempt since they will

say King hashas commanded Queen vashi to

be brought before him and she did not

come this very day the noble women of

Persia and media who have heard of the

Queen's who have heard of the Queen's

Behavior will say the same to all the

king's officials and there will be

contempt and wrath in

plenty if it please the king let a royal

order go out from him and let it be

written among the laws of the Persians

and the mes so that it may not be

repealed that vashti is never again to

come before King hueras and let the King

give her royal position to another who

is better than she so when the decree

made by the king is proclaimed

throughout all his kingdom for it is

vast all women will give honor to their

husbands high and low alike

this advice pleased the king and the

princes and the King did as mukin

promised proposed he sent letters to all

the Royal provinces to every province in

his own script and to every people in

his own language that every man be

master in his own household and speak

according to the language of the

people since since I became a dad one of

the things I find myself doing a lot is

reading children's books with my

daughter it's it's a lot of fun to get

to see her look at all the colorful

pictures and stuff like that and there's

a lot of children's books today that uh

start to explain the truths about God to

to kids at a very young age I recently

heard about one of these books titled

the Moon is always round in the book A

boy looks up at the at the moon at

different phases and sees how it changes

all the time but his his dad who's

sitting next to him tells him the but

the Moon is always

round and

the story follows the boy through happy

moments and sad moments in his life and

watch we watch the moon change during

each of those moments the story follows

the family finding out that the boy

finding out he's going to have a little

sister and tragically later in the story

uh the the mother miscarries the

baby

and the story ends with the fathers

standing uh at her funeral um and

sharing with the people gathered that

the Moon is always round and he asks his

son what does this mean what does it

mean that the Moon is always round and

the sun answers that God is always

good sometimes the night is really dark

and stormy and cloudy and we can't see

the moon at all sometimes we look up at

the moon and it's just a sliver right uh

sometimes we see the moon and it's we

see half of the Moon and then other

nights this moon is shining so brightly

that it lights up the whole

Sky here's the thing about the moon God

is the exact same

right no matter what God is

doing no matter how hard it is to see

God is stays the exact same God is

always good no matter if we can see what

he's doing or what if we can't there are

times when God is working and we can see

clearly that he's pointing us in a

certain direction in our lives there are

times when we see just part of what the

Lord is doing in our lives and there are

other times where we look up and we ask

ourselves where is God how could God let

something like this

happen still there are other times where

it's like the middle of the day and we

don't even think about the moon but the

Moon is still there it's still doing

what it's supposed to be doing and the

Moon is still

round God

is the one true constant in this

world God does not

change God is exactly who he says he

is and God will do exactly what he says

he's going to do it doesn't matter if we

can see it or not he is always in

control he's always there and he's

always

good even when it feels like he's not

he's

working in a world that seems to be

falling apart more and more every day

this should be an encouragement to us in

the Book of Esther the night is very

dark it's hard to see the

moon we the Book of Esther actually is

the only book in the Bible where God is

not mentioned at

all there is no mention of God there is

no mention of Jesus there's no mention

of the Holy Spirit there is no mention

of

prayer um no Prophet receives a word

from God and shares it with the people

in fact at the end of this chapter the

people of God aren't even

mentioned but God is still at

work see in the Bible at different

points we see God actively doing things

for his people when his people are

enslaved in Egypt God sends the plagues

on the Egyptians when his people are in

Peril as they run from the Egyptians

after they've been liberated God Parts

the Red Sea even after Exile when Daniel

is thrown in the Lion's Den God closes

the mouths of lions when Shadrach

Meshach and abedo are thrown in the

fiery furnace there is another person in

there with them keeping them safe these

are active things that God is

doing but in the Book of Esther God acts

in a different way God uses what seem to

be

coincidences many of them in the Book of

Esther all culminating in the

Deliverance of his people and a great

victory for for his

people when we see God part the Red Sea

we're like wow look at what God did when

Xerxes gets drunk at a party and asks

his Queen to come parade in front of him

and she refuses our response is not like

man look at what God did

right we just think that there's this is

this guy is acting like an idiot right

but God is at work God uses these things

to bring about his

will God uses the drunkenness of a king

the rebellion of his Queen the beauty of

Esther and the coincidence that morai

happens to be in a certain place at a

certain time to bring about the

Deliverance of his people in this

passage God uses the worldliness of

Xerxes and the refusal of vashti to

bring about the salvation of his people

while pointing to our future hope in

Jesus

chapter one opens with an incredibly

detailed look at the wealth and status

of the most important most powerful man

in the world at a time uh the author

goes out of his way to say this is the

Xerxes this is the Xerxes is the Greek

name for a hashas which is the word the

the name that's used in um in the text

and xer is easier to say that's how I'm

going to refer to him for the rest of

sermon it looks at King Xerxes and and

and the author points out how powerful

he is it says he he rules over 127

provinces from India to

Ethiopia it talks about his wealth he

spent the previous two years before this

extending his Empire and and uh

consolidating

Power culminating in this Feast where

his purpose of this Feast is to just

show off how wealth he is

um he spends 180 days parading his

wealth in front of the princes and the

governors and the politicians in his

Empire and it takes him 180 days to do

this he has 180 days worth of wealth to

show off and then at the end of 180 days

he's like well I you know I I could use

a little bit more of a party you know so

we we'll just throw a shorter Feast it's

only seven days but we he invites all of

the city of Souza and it talks about how

he he uh makes a decree a law about how

much everyone can drink and how much

they can drink and what they can do

because he wants control talks about his

wealth it talks about him uh putting

precious jewels in the floor to make a

mosaic because he just has so many extra

precious jewels that he just wants them

in the floor talks about how everyone

has a in in the ESV it says everyone has

a different glass gold goblet that

they're drink using to drink out out of

I don't think that that really does

Justice to What's Happening

Here the the original text says

something to the effect of like everyone

has a glass that is so unique like a

snowflake like like each individual

glass is different no two are the same

and everybody in the entire city gets

one the purpose of this is to just show

how wealthy he is the language here used

is is only really used to talk about the

the lavishness of Solomon's Temple

anywhere else in the Old

Testament and so the culmination of this

Feast is him showing off his most prized

possession his wife his beautiful wife

he wants her to come uh when he's been

binge drinking for 187 days he decides

he wants his wife to come parade in

front of him and that's when the story

flips on its

head in a stunning move vashti ref fuses

the king's summons and the picture of

power and control that xeri to spend

1787 days crafting comes crashing

down now vashi would have under we we

don't get a lot of context for why she

refused and so I'm not going to give a

guess at why it was but she would have

understood the ramifications of her

actions right so she knows that this

could lead to her death um but she

refuses

anyway so we see Xerxes all of a sudden

for this worldly man that he

is he's obsessed with power he's

obsessed with control and then the rest

of the chapter verses 10 through 22 is

really meant to make him look

foolish he goes out of his way to show

how xery's response highlights how his

priorities are in the wrong place he

summons his most trusted counselors uh

and gets their advice about what they

should do now Timothy Cain in his book

uh the god of great reversals points out

why their decision about what they're

going to do is is kind of funny first

mukin is worried about everybody finding

out that

Xerxes uh was refused by vashi refused

Xerxes so his plan is to send out a

Royal Decree to every single province in

every single language and tell everyone

what happened

that so what he's worried about is

everyone finding out instead he just

tells everyone what happened uh the

second thing that happens is vashti gets

banished and she's not allowed to be in

front and see King uh King Xerxes

anymore uh well that's what exactly what

she wanted in the first place she didn't

want to come before the king so she gets

exactly what she wants and finally they

think that the best way to make sure the

men keep control of their wives is to

make a law about

it you know I don't think that's the

best way to go about that uh best

response to

have you know maybe H just treat your

wives with more respect but instead we

just make a law about it and see what

happens the last half of the chapter

goes basically just undo everything that

we learn about Xerxes in the first nine

verses uh as the chapter draws to a

close

Xerxes looks powerless his advisers look

foolish and the door is open for a new

Queen to enter the picture there are

three main takeaways that I want us to

look at from this first chapter first

we're going to talk about the emptiness

of worldly pleasure second we'll talk

about how Jesus is the opposite of

Xerxes and finally we'll talk about how

the ways that God's Providence is

discreetly woven into this entire story

so Xerxes is is the portrait of

worldliness he spent 187 days building

himself up to all of the most important

people in his Empire and at the end of

it he isn't happy he's left empty

queenless and looking like a

fool do you know what the other purpose

of this Feast was uh Xerxes wanted to go

to war with the Greeks um and he thought

that the best way to inspire

Army to be loyal to him was to show off

his wealth to

everybody well as we see at the end of

this that might not have been the best

way to go about that you know Xerxes and

the Persians went to Greece and they

they won some victories but in the end

they were ultimately

defeated he was worried about his image

to his people above everything else he

had to display an image of power and

control and once that image fell apart

he responded like the insecure person he

really was

his facade of wealth and

riches I heard Tim Keller in a sermon on

this passage joke that it would be a

real shame to live in a society where a

man is judged by the size of his bank

account and a woman is judged by her

dress size in case you didn't get the

joke he was implying that we do live in

that

Society see we're not so different from

the Persians we like to think that

Society has evolved over the years but

it's not really true is

it you may not have 180 days worth of

wealth to parade in front of your

friends but we sure do like to show off

what we have don't

we we like to put our worth in things of

this

world what is it that you're putting

your worth

in what is it that gives you fulfillment

or you think is going to give you

fulfillment in this life what's going to

fill the emptiness that you feel inside

yourself is it status from a job or

promotion is it that new house or

apartment is it a relationship or

marriage is it having

kids is it some skill or knowledge that

you have that you want to show off to

people um is it losing that last 5 to 10

pounds

now don't get me wrong there's there's

nothing wrong with self-improvement at

its

core but when our goal for

self-improvement when our our hope for a

better life uh supersedes our desire for

God those things become an idol in our

lives and all of those Idols are going

to leave you empty they're not going to

fill the void that you feel inside

yourself they're not going to give you

lasting Joy or

peace there's only one way that we can

really experience

fulfillment and niron talked about it

last week we live lives filled by the

spirit when we allow the spirit to fill

us up we can begin to experience true

joy in 1st Samuel

16 let's see

in 1 Samuel 16 Samuel is going out uh to

anoint a new king of Israel um the Lord

has given up on Saul and he wants uh

he's going to anoint a new king um he

goes to the house of a man named Jesse

um and Jesse starts to bring all of his

sons out to see to to to walk in front

of Samuel and as each one passes by

Samuel thinks man this this guy looks

like a king this guy looks handsome he

looks strong this guy looks like a

king and and God tells Samuel he says

you may look at him and you see a king

but I am not looking for the appearance

of a king I'm looking for the heart of a

king God

says do not look on his appearance or

the height of his stature because I have

rejected him for the Lord sees not as

man sees man looks on the outward

appearance but the Lord looks on the

heart after Jesse has brought all of his

sons supposedly all of his son Sons

before Samuel Samuel asks do you have

any more Sons like this is where the

Lord told me to come we haven't seen the

one yet um and he says well I have the

youngest he's out in the field tending

the sheep and so he calls him in and God

says this is him is King

David and David is although he has his

faults and he has his shortcomings he's

known as the man after God's Own

Heart and that's what we want to be

that's what we want to be known as so

what does the Lord see when he looks at

you are you a whitewashed tomb as the

Pharisees of Jesus day do you look great

on the outside but your soul is rotting

slowly or the Lord see his Spirit work

in your

life Jesus calls us to let his Spirit

fill us and shape our innermost self he

will change the desires of our

hearts and renew Us by his

Spirit are you storing up treasure on

Earth or are you storing up treasure in

heaven do not spend more time improving

your outward appearance than you spend

deepening your relationship with

God deepening your relationship with God

will have lasting effects don't allow

yourself to become distracted by the

fleeting pleasures of this world but as

Paul says in Colossians 3 which is right

before what we actually read earlier um

set your minds on things that are above

not on things that are on the earth

because Jesus is better than whatever

you're chasing

after Jesus is better than whatever

brings you fulfillment in this

world in this chapter we also see that

Jesus is a true is a true and better

King than Xerxes Xerxes attempts to show

how powerful he is by showing off his

wealth and wielding his control and um

glamorizing

himself but Vash shows us his power is

not real it's

fickle in the gospels we see true power

in

Jesus at different times the the winds

and the waves obey

him demons obey

him sickness and diseases obey

him even death obeys him he conquers

death that is true power and power that

demands honor and respect from us yet he

doesn't wield it flippantly like someone

like Xerxes would he uses that power to

help others and prove that he is

God the comparison continues with the

way that Xerxes treats his

Queen Xerxes um in a in his drunkenness

sends his servants to retrieve his

bride and when she slights him he

banishes her no room for forgiveness no

room for Grace

Jesus treats us very

differently we are Christ's

bride yet we didn't deserve to be

summoned to him we didn't deserve to go

before him our sin that darkens our

hearts should have separated us from God

permanently but Jesus doesn't summon us

to

himself he doesn't send servants to

retrieve us what does he do he hum

himself he leaves his throne on

high he puts on flesh and

blood and walks among

us yet did we recognize him did we know

him did we know our savior no we

rejected

him Jesus is a Man of Sorrows acquainted

with

grief we deserve

banishment we deserve what Vash he got

because we are sinful Romans 6:23 tells

us that the wages of sin is

death but the free gift of God is

eternal life in Christ Jesus our

lord everyone Us in the every one of us

in this room deserves punishment for the

sin that we have done in our lives and

the sin that weighs so heavily upon

us but the beauty of our King is that we

have

hope see Jesus did not simply take on

flesh flesh and walk among us he became

a sacrificial

lamb for

us he went to a cross and died the agony

of a death on a cross for

us he died that death so that we may

life I'm reminded of the picture of

Jesus washing the feet of the

disciples the humility and sacrifice in

that picture is humbling

uh Peter is initially upall that Jesus

would wash his feet would stoop to that

level to wash his feet Jesus tells him

unless I wash you you can have no part

me I don't know about you but uh my feet

are

gross especially walking around Bangkok

all the time my feet are sweaty and

smelly and dirty and you know Jesus

disciples would worn sandals all the

time walked around Dusty Israel the feet

would have been covered in in dirt and

grime for me it would feel extremely

vulnerable to allow Jesus to wash my

feet but I want you to imagine right now

that Jesus is washing your

feet how would that feel

can you imagine someone like

Xerxes stooping to wash your

feet our King did that for you and he

would do it

again let Jesus wash

you so that you can take part in the

gift that he

offers Jesus didn't simply wash our feet

with water but he washes our souls with

his

blood he didn't only become a servant

but

sacrifice Hebrews 13:12 tells

us so Jesus also suffered outside the

gate in order to sanctify the people

through his own

blood he suffered outside the gate he

took our

banishment he died the death that we

deserved and was forsaken by the

father so that when the father looks

upon us we would be white as snow

this is a king that should be

honored this is a king that you should

praised Jesus is better than whatever

you're chasing after whatever you're

trying to fill your heart

with he offers the sacrifice as a free

gift for all

people you you need only reach out and

take

it don't be like vashti don't refuse

your king because he he is here and he

is worth

it come to him and find

peace there will come a

day when we will be reunited with our

King and on that day there will be a

feast that far outshines the one

described in Esther

1 Isaiah 25638 tells us on this mountain

the Lord of hosts will make for All

Peoples a feast of well-aged wine of

rich food full of marrow of aged wine

well refined and he will swallow up on

this mountain the covering that is cast

Over All Peoples the veil that is spread

over all

nations he will swallow up death forever

and the Lord will wipe away tears from

all faces and the reproach of his people

he will take away from all the Earth for

the Lord has

spoken Christ shall have his bride

and we will be reunited with him at last

and we will not simply Feast but we will

be fully in the presence of our

savior this verse says that that the

veil that currently exists between us

and God will be

removed and we'll get to experience the

presence of our Lord and King for the

very first

time everything that

happens brings us one step closer to

that beautiful end with with

Christ God is always in

control he is always on his

throne and God is already at work in the

Book of Esther at the end of chapter 1

with the banishment of vas We Are One

Step Closer to the reign of Queen

Esther and the Deliverance of God's

people I want you to think about if this

happened today if a person who was in

power spent six months throwing a party

for himself and at the end of it he

banished his his

wife

and made a law that you know all women

have to respect their husbands at the

end of it I think it would be pretty

hard for us in that moment to think that

God was still in

control I think it would be really

difficult to see the ways that God was

working uh but God is never absent

even in this story that seems like it's

about a petulant Pagan

ruler God is at

work in your life there are going to be

moments when it seems like God is not

working when the events of this

world seemed too difficult seemed too

evil that the Lord could be

there but let me assure you God is

always there he's always working and the

events of this this world will always

work toward his

will in First Kings 19 the Prophet

Elijah has an encounter with

God God says that he's going to pass

before the mouth of a cave that Elijah

is staying

in uh and he says go out and stand

before the

Lord and the Lord passed

by and first there is a a a strong wind

that comes by and breaks apart the rocks

but the God is but God is Not In The

Wind then an earthquake

comes but God is not in the

earthquake then there's a

fire but God is not in the

fire then last there is a still Small

Voice almost a

whisper and God is in the whisper

pay attention to that still Small

Voice most of the time we want God to

show up in our lives like strong wind or

an earthquake or fire and fix

everything but that's not how God always

shows

up more often than not God uh shows up

in a

whisper pay attention to that whisper

because the world is loud it's

distracting the world doesn't want us to

hear the voice of

God we have to learn to recognize that

voice amid the

noise see Jesus said his says his sheep

know his

voice do you know his voice

can you hear it in the silence in The

Quiet

Moments can you

recognize God speaking to you in your

life he's in your life and he will never

abandon

you in a world that seems to be

descending faster and faster into chaos

the story of Esther should be a great

encouragement to

us God is in control today the same way

that he was in

control in the days of

Esther we may not see him but we can

know with confidence that he is

there our lives are like great

tapestries have you ever seen a

beautiful

tapestry the

front displays a beautiful picture but

if you flip it over if you flip it

over the back is just a bunch of knots

and loose strings and it looks like a

mess most of the time in our lives we

just get to see the back of the

tapestry most of the time our lives feel

like a mess they feel like a bunch of

loose string and Knots and things are

going in all different directions when

you flip it

over God is weaving a beautiful picture

of your

life it's hard to be satisfied with just

seeing the back of the tapestry but

that's what God calls us to for most of

the time we live

don't forget that the Moon is always

round no matter how dark the night how

difficult it becomes to see the moon is

round God will remain exactly who he

says he is today tomorrow and

forever he will not forsake his people

and he always keeps his

promises I'm reminded of the words of

the third verse of the hymn This Is My

Father's World and it's there in your

bulletin if you want to look at

it um it says this is my father's world

oh let me n forget that though the wrong

seems off so strong God is the ruler yet

this is My Father's World why should my

heart be sad the Lord is King let the

heavens ring there God Reigns let Earth

glad let me tell

you there are a lot of days where it

feels like the wrong is stronger than

everything

else when what's wrong

with life when the weight of sin weighs

on us very

heavily there are a lot of days in this

world when it feels like the wrong is

growing stronger every

day but remember that God is the ruler

of this

world He Reigns and he always

will amen let us

pray father God in a world of turmoil

and upheaval and evil remind us daily

that you are the true

king Lord you are on your throne and

your

Sovereign father today let our hearts be

strengthened by the that

declaration Lord thank you for the gift

of your son and the sacrifice that he

made for us on that cross Lord give us

strength to persevere in a world that

constantly tries to distract us from the

truth as we long for the day that we

will be reunited with

you Lord fill us with your spirit and

put within us a heart that longs for

you Lord take away weigh the idols of

our hearts and fix our eyes on you we

praise you Lord for the gift of

gathering together to Worship You
