Let's turn your

Bibles to Matthew 28.

Matthew 28. And as you turn your Bibles

to Matthew 28, uh there is actually one

correction that's not uh anyone's fault

except myself. Um the of the title of

the sermon, it says the influence of the

resurrection. I'm actually going to

change that to the to the riddle of the

resurrection as you you see here. The

riddle of the resurrection. I think

that's a a clearer title uh to help you

understand the sermon a little bit

better. Um and and so just on that

little note um so

but let's

now I have to turn.

Okay.

This is God's word from Matthew uh to

the people of God.

Matthew 28 verses yeah 1 through 10 and

then jump down to 16- 20

hear God's word. Now after the Sabbath

toward the dawning of the first day

uh the first day of the week, Mary

Magdal and the other Mary went to see

the tomb. And behold, there was a great

earthquake. For an angel of the Lord

descended from heaven and came and

rolled back the stone and sat on it. His

appearance was like lightning and his

clothing white as snow. for the for fear

of him. The guards trembled and became

like dead men. But the angel said to the

women, "Do not be afraid, for I know

that you seek Jesus whom was crucified.

He is not here, for he has risen as he

said. Come see the place where he lay."

then going quickly and telling the

disciples that he had risen from the

dead. And behold, he is going before you

to Galilee. There you will see him. See,

I have told you." So they departed

quickly from the tomb with fear and

great joy, and ran to tell his

disciples. And behold, Jesus met them,

saying, "Greetings."

And they came up and took hold of his

feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said

to them,"Do not be afraid. Go and tell

my brothers to go to Galilee,

and there they will see me." Then jump

down to verse 16. Now the 11 disciples

went to Galilee to the mountain to which

Jesus had directed them. And when they

had saw him, they worshiped him, but

some doubted.

And Jesus came and said to them, "All

authority in heaven on earth have been

given to me. Go therefore and make

disciples of all nations, baptizing them

in the name of the Father and of the Son

and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to

observe all that I have commanded you.

And behold, I am with you always to the

end of the age."

Thus ends the reading of God's word. The

flowers fade, but the word of God stands

forever. And this is God's word.

All good. Humans are curious, aren't we?

We're curious creatures. Uh we are

inquisitive. Uh we like to ask a lot of

questions. We like to investigate every

part of the world.

Now, we start out young and you you get

the funniest questions from kids, you

know, maybe it's, "Do brown cows make

chocolate milk?"

Or or after hearing uh that you were

once told that you were in mommy's

tummy, you might ask, "Mommy, if you

love me, why did you eat me?"

Now, here's one. What about uh when

you're reading the Bible? Uh, daddy,

what's circumcision?

Does it have to do with the circus?

Now, when you're a teenager, the

questions change. It's who am I? Or who

are you?

Or who are we? Or what are we?

See, deep inside every one of us,

something awakens.

Deep inside our bellies of our souls, a

conscience wakens

like a baby's cry in the night to a

mother's ear.

We are awakened and we have to figure

out what's really going on in the world.

What's really wrong with the world?

We ask why.

Why did this happen?

Why death?

Why life?

Why meaning and purpose? Why?

We're all born with the riddle of life

in front of us.

It's an ache in our soul.

It might come in loneliness.

It might come through happiness.

It might come when nothing makes sense.

or when you forget yourself and

everything makes sense.

Have you been there? Have you been there

when when you feel like nothing makes

sense in your life?

Or maybe you've been when you feel like

everything makes sense at least for a

moment or two.

See, there's that ache to figure out

this riddle of life.

What does it all mean?

We begin here with these questions of

life and meaning and death because this

is where our text begins.

It's still in the dark. Mary Magdalene

and the other Mary. Now, we don't know

who she is. There's actually a number of

Marys in the New Testament, but these

two women must see the tomb.

They awaken in the middle of night. Now

remember, there's no street lights or

there's no urban uh pollution, urban

light pollution.

And they go out because nothing makes

sense. They thought they had found real

life in Jesus, but he ended with death

just like everyone else.

And so they have to see their their

curiosity trying to figure out. And

there it is again, the riddle of life.

What's the meaning of life?

What's the meaning of death?

What's this all about? They're like,

they're like you and I.

We're like them and they're like us.

The riddle of life is in front of all of

us.

Now, we might not think of it every day,

but it comes,

it haunts us,

it confuses us,

and it presses us to seek out.

You have to see this because then you

begin to see that this text from the

Gospel of Matthew is really, really

helpful for you.

See, in Matthew 28, what we hear today

is that the resurrection of Jesus Christ

answers the riddle of life.

It does so by inviting us to see. It

does so by restoring us and then

propelling us to go and to tell to

influence the world.

So let's look at that. Jesus was

resurrected for us to see. Now let's

look at the text. Verse one, Matthew

28:1. It says, "Now after the Sabbath,

toward the dawn of the first day of the

week, Mary Magdalum and the other Mary

went to see the tomb."

Now, one of the great first liners of uh

the of English novels

is Marley is dead to begin with. Marley

is dead to begin with. It's from The

Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. And

you have to know that Marley is dead to

understand the events that just hap that

will happen to Scrooge, right? And for

us, we must understand that when the two

Marys came out

after the Sabbath,

the Sabbath that would have been on

Saturday for them. You know, you know

what happened three days ago? On Friday,

Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, they

stood so close. They stood close enough

to smell the death of their lord, of

their meth, of their master, of their of

their teacher, of their aan

being humiliated,

shamed, and died on the Roman cross.

They saw it all through the their tears

of loss.

And now, three days later, still dark,

maybe 4:00 am, 500 am.

And what on what we would call Sunday,

that's today for us, the two Marys woke

to see their aan.

And they knew this when they came to the

tomb that dead people stay dead.

Dead people don't rise

for a Jew, especially not in the middle

of history.

Dead people don't come back to life.

Mary Magdalene walked alongside the

other Mary. Why? Or our text says to see

the tomb.

To see the tomb.

To see. Why? To see. To understand.

They had just experienced seeing Jesus

on the cross.

And in their hearts, a a flood of

questions. And the downpour of the

riddle of life overwhelmed them to see

did death really happen to Jesus.

Death to Jesus. The one who was and

interrupted by a father who was pleading

with him to come to his house because

his daughter was sick and death to

Jesus. the one who walks through the

laughter and the mockery that was in

that house because everyone presumed

that now that daughter had died.

The Jesus who walked into that room and

walked beside her bed and said, "Rise,

little girl."

And Tabitha got up from her eternal

sleep.

Or what about Jesus? When he was walking

into the city, there was a funeral

procession that was coming right at him.

And Jesus zooms in on one person. Jesus

focuses on the mother who had just lost

her son, who had already lost

her husband.

She was a widow. and how Jesus

walked directly to her and cared for her

with compassion and then turned to the

casket and said with the power of his

word, "Get up." And the son got up from

the casket.

She was restored to her son and the

shame of death was removed.

Oh, but then what about Mary Magdalene?

Now, we talked we learned a little bit

about this in the Easter morning

service, but Mary Magdalene, who surely

may be thought of the first time that

she encountered Jesus, she was tormented

by tormented with seven demons.

It felt like death. And yet Jesus power,

she was released and was raised,

was given life. It felt Mary then

devoted her whole life to Jesus because

he was life to her and she thought that

he was life and the answers of the

riddle of life was there. But now death

and the riddle of life still continues

to come like a clock ticking tick tick

tick. See death is a great equalizer.

The wise preacher in Ecclesiastes

says, "How the wise die like the fool."

So the rich, the poor,

the honored, the shame,

the king, the peasant, as one dies, so

dies another.

And so it is that the this is the great

riddle of life.

Plato the great uh philosopher of

western culture said that the true goal

of philosophy is to understand death and

dying.

See all religions and philosophies of

the world try to answer the meaning of

death and suffering. And until you

figure out this question

nothing else matters. Not justice, not

love, not life.

Now, our modern-day equivalents to

philosophers old are the influencers of

social media.

There's an abundant of people telling

you how to live and what is the good

life.

And yet when I search it, now I search,

maybe you search differently, but or my

algorithms come differently to me, but

when I search YouTube and other social

media outlets, I don't really hear a lot

of people talking about death.

Modern people have a way of avoiding

death. Death and suffering are absent

from most popular thinkers.

Why?

We don't think that we can die.

That's our that's what we think. We

don't think that we can die. Rather, the

message of social media is here is that

you can outwit death by fitness or

technology.

You should be able to live above death

and live immortal.

But then there's that that rare occasion

suffering and death rears its ugly and

inevitable head and presence. You know,

a video comes out, maybe you've seen

these from influencers. It's titled the

video I never thought I would have to

make or I have a serious health issue

and the riddle of life dick shows up

again. Puck.

One prime example of this. Do you

remember what happened uh in 2022 with

Chris Helmsworth,

the god of thunder himself?

He was making a documentary

named entitled Limitless.

The point of the documentary was that

Chris was on an epic mission to find out

how to live better for longer,

surpass

whatever we can do. And so then he goes

gets genetic testing and the test

results come back

and what do they come? They show that he

has a a very high risk for developing

early Alzheimer's.

Nobody can escape death. Not even the

one who has a body but God.

Now

what then? What does Christianity say or

do with suffering and death?

One thing you need to see is that this

narrative, this narrative, it in it

invites us in. It invites it.

Christianity doesn't say it just

happens. Deal with it. Nor does

Christianity say run from it or deny it.

No. Christianity invites us in to see

what God in Christ has done with death.

Look at verse two. Look at the text.

Look at verse two.

There was an earthquake. There was a

great earthquake and an angel appears

from heaven and then the stone is rolled

away.

Now, what's going on here? This is quite

a display of heavenly drama with lights

and explosions.

But don't miss the point. There is no

implication here that all of this lights

and drama and the rolling of the stone

was to release and to resurrect Jesus.

That's not the reason the angel didn't

come to help Jesus escape. That's quite

clear. Well, then why do why does the

stone roll back?

It rolls back to let the first witnesses

in.

It invites us in. Look what the angel

said. Verse five and six. He says,

"Don't be afraid.

Don't be afraid." Now, that's very

understandable, right? Because if you

ever been in an earthquake, right, it's

a little bit scary. Don't be afraid. And

then notice what the text says. For I

know that you seek Jesus

who was crucified. He is not here. For

he has risen as he said. Come see. See,

he's inviting. Come see the place where

he lay.

Maybe you're not a follower of Christ

yet. Maybe you're still seeking truth.

What Christianity is telling you is the

same thing that it told these two womens

with all the questions and riddles.

Come into the tomb.

Come closer. Come see that Jesus is not

dead. Come see that Jesus has answered

the riddle of life.

Christianity answers the riddle of life

and not by a new philosophy or a new

YouTube channel or it doesn't offer a

new way of a a pathway of life or a TED

talk.

Christianity Jesus Christ answers the

riddle of life by his bodily

resurrection over death and sin.

Christianity. That's the answer. Jesus

Christ gets up from the grave.

The event of the resurrection answers

the riddle of life from the inside out.

Now, but even more,

which is amazing, which is phenomenal,

which is epic, but even more, it the

text goes on. Why are the women invited

in? And why are we today in Bangkok

invited in to see? See, we are invited

in because Jesus resurrected

for us.

See the Ning creed. The nice and Chris

says he's resurrected for us and our

salvation.

He resurrected to restore us back to God

from for all those who believe in him.

See, Jesus was resurrected to restore

Look at verses 8-10.

So they departed quickly from the tomb

with great fear with with fear and great

joy and ran to tell his disciples. And

behold, Jesus met them, saying,

"Greetings." And they came up and took

hold of his feet and worshiped him. Then

Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid.

Go and tell my brothers, go to Galilee.

There they will see me."

So the women listen to the angel. That's

always a good thing. And they they saw

the empty tomb and their hearts are

filled with fear and great joy. So

there's a mix of emotions. So in their

running, in their going, in their

obedience, then Jesus appears.

He appears to the women and he greets

them. He says greetings.

He's basically saying swatty cop.

He's saying hello.

This is very simple.

This is this is a normal welcome. A a

very simple normal greeting. A hello.

Now, now on the surface, I was thinking

about this. It's kind of odd that

Matthew would record this. Again, it's

so simple. It's so ordinary. It's so

normal.

Unless

unless you're saying hello to somebody

that your relationship has been broken.

See, have you ever had this experience?

Have you ever walked unexpect as you're

walking uh you walk by a person that you

have a broken relationship with?

you walk by and maybe there's uh in that

relationship there was betrayal or

abandonment or maybe it's that person

that you broke up with or even worse

divorced.

Maybe it's that person that kind of

ruined your career or your name.

You've been sinned against the the

relationship. Well, they say is

complicated.

It's it's very complicated, you know. I

mean, even simply, I know that sometimes

it's hard for for Manny and I when when

there's something against I we're kind

of broken and sometimes hard to say

hello, good morning, it's hard

sometimes.

So, see, saying greetings,

saying hello to them,

that's hard because everything you want

to do is re you want to do is you want

to reject them. You want to walk right

past them. You want to forget them.

You don't want to be noticed and you

don't want to notice them. And so when

Jesus appears to the women by saying

greetings,

Jesus is saying a whole lot more. See,

Jesus tells the women, look what he

says. Go tell my brothers. Go tell my

brothers. Go tell his disciples, his

chosen disciples, the disciples who

denied him, doubted him, scattered,

abandoned, left him to be crucified.

Do you see what he's saying to the

women? Go tell them, my brothers, I want

to see them. I want to restore them.

See, uh you see in how the angel in

verse 7 says, "Do not be afraid." And

then also Jesus repeats this in verse 10

saying the same thing. Do not be afraid.

How can Jesus do this?

Jesus when he appears to the women and

then eventually to his disciples,

Jesus approaches them based on his

substitutionary work for them. What do I

mean? See when he said on the cross,

"Father, forgive them." He's saying

that, "Father, forgive my brothers

also."

He's saying to them, "Now, don't be

afraid.

I have perfect love for you.

I'm for you. I'm with you."

See, what does this mean? Jesus,

he's not going to bring up what they did

or what they didn't do sinfully or out

of fear. No, Jesus approaches them in a

fully restored, reconciled relationship.

It's not that his disciples didn't sin.

No, they did. But that Jesus takes their

sin willingly absorbed it. The

resurrection means more than you think.

See, the apostle Paul said it this way

that Jesus was raised for their

justification. And then even in our

assurance of pardon,

what does it say right after that?

Therefore, we have peace with God. We

have peace. See, resurrection equits us.

Resurrection declares us not guilty. And

that relationally it means that G Jesus

is totally for them because he has taken

their unbelief,

their denial, their faithlessness.

Jesus does so because as Christ he

became sin, their sin, my sin, your sin,

and he has become the righteousness, the

merit that they did not deserve.

And so when he approaches them, he's

saying greetings. He's saying, "I love

you. I'm for you. I'm coming to restore

you."

Here is where Christ and Christianity

stand apart from every other religion.

See, Jesus doesn't come back and say,

"Oh, now now you're going to need to

earn and merit my love and receive my

love and resurrection."

Jesus doesn't come back as a vengeful

God.

Nor does Jesus come and offer lectures

and lessons on how to resurrect.

See, there's nothing in the Bible that

teaches us how to perform a

resurrection.

It's not like Jesus is saying here,

okay, I've resurrected and here are the

instructions. Now that you know that

resurrection can happen, now you have to

figure out how to resurrect. And here's

the five-step plan.

See, look how Jesus comes to the women.

He says, "Greetings." It's greetings of

grace because it's his grace.

They're a gracious king who saved them

from death and sin.

Jesus has paid the price for them and he

has come to them.

Resurrection is God's work and God's

work alone. his gracious power, not our

earth. He restored their relationship.

Don't be afraid.

I'm for you. I love you. I'm with you.

Do you know why this is critically

important?

It answers another riddle of life.

Yes, death is a riddle to us, but also

almost all cultures, I can say all

cultures and and people know that it's

it's your relationships that matter

most. It's your family or your friends

or your neighbors. It's that these

relationships are uttermost important.

It's your community makes life worth

living.

Or

if you have a hard relationship,

it's hard.

It can feel like you're living in hell.

See, Jesus when he tells the women,

"Tell my brothers, I'm coming to meet

them." It he is telling us that the

resurrection is more than a historical

event. Though it is.

See, too often Christians

only think of thinking about presenting

the evidence for the resurrection as a

historical event as if they're giving a

history lesson in a university.

But that is not what Jesus does with his

disciples.

He meets them. He meets them. You you

know what this means?

The resurrection answers the riddle of

life not by an event alone but by the

very person of Christ himself.

See the witness and the apologetic of

Christianity is not is not enough facts.

I can't give you enough facts about

Christianity and the religion for you to

believe. But what I can give you and I

offer you today

is Christ.

Christ himself, Jesus Christ, comes to

you personally.

He comes to meet you. He comes to know

you and you can know him. See, this is

incredible because look what Jesus says

about himself. Look at verse 18. All

authority on heaven and earth have been

given to me. He is the king of kings and

rightfully so. There's no other ruler,

no other king, no other person

who has ever done what Jesus did.

No king, no ruler, no person has ever

got up from the grave.

But then get this, the King of Kings

comes to meet you.

He comes to meet you and he wants to

share in a relationship with you like a

brother, like a friend, like a like a

king who loves his people intimately.

I will tell you

that

that will make you the most incredible

restored person.

The one I'm supposed to live for me has

lived

The one I'm supposed to live for has

lived for me. The one that I rejected

now receives me. The one the king wants

me to meet with.

Who am I?

I'm known by my king.

That will do.

I tell you too that that this kind of

love makes will make you an incredibly

loving person.

When you know that the king loves you

like that,

you can't help but love others with a

kind of love like that.

That g king that the king is Jesus and

that he is powerful enough

to protect you from all your enemies and

to protect his relationship with you

that he is always with you. So if you're

if you're a Christian here, you can say

that's my king. It's it's a king you

want to follow and to worship and to go

tell the world.

The woman go tell the brothers and then

Jesus commisss the brothers to go tell

the world. Jesus risen was risen to go

for us to go and tell the world. Verses

19 and 20. Go therefore and make

observe all that I've commanded you. And

behold, I am with you always to the end

of age. The strong exhortation here is

go, go, tell the world. The resurrection

of Christ answers the riddle of the

meaning of life. The resurrection makes

you incredibly active. See, in in most

religions and in modern secularism,

this life is all there is. It's over

when you die. And so, there's no real

difference of what you do and what you

say or what you do don't do or don't say

or how you do it. Therefore, ultimately,

it's insignificant.

On the other hand, the resurrection says

all of life matters. Every moment

matters. Everyone matters. So invest in

that. Invest in people because people

last. Relationships last.

So go

here. The translation could be

translated while going.

While you are going, while you're going

through your day and your life, know it

all matters. Beauty and truth, you

matter. Your neighbor matters. As CS

Lewis says, you will never meet an

ordinary person.

But I can also say you will never meet a

person who hasn't wondered about life,

fear death, and questions the meaning of

why all this.

We all have the riddles of life in in

front of us.

And maybe that's you. Maybe you are even

still a Christian and you have those

questions. You know, it says in the

text, you know, some worship but others

doubted. It's mixed. There was hesitance

at point.

It took a little time to get an

understanding here. So brothers and

sisters, friends, wherever you are, be

active

actively going making disciples.

This is where community plays a huge

role. This is essentially what Jesus is

saying. Go and make disciples, baptizing

them, teaching them. He's saying that

the message of resurrection forms

communities,

forms churches and then people in these

communities are now in new with new

identities and have answered the

question, who am I? Who I belong to? I

belong to the God of life, the king of

kings, the god of love and I can be

walked. I can walk in this grace that he

has bestowed on me.

See this community,

Grace City, Bangkok, can be influencers

to this city. So go help people believe.

Trust that Jesus says to them and to us,

"Come in. Come and see. See the empty

tomb.

I've come to meet with you, to restore

you.

know that I have loved you and I will

always be with you. This is the message

of Christianity, Jesus Christ, the

person and the work of Christ. Let us

believe. Let us pray

now.

Lord, we thank you that you are good and

that you got up from the grave because

that was our that was our end. We don't

understand so much about this life. But

if we understand that you got up from

the grave, that you resurrected all of

life

can make sense.

And to know that you not only got

resurrected for not just yourself, but

for us that we know that we can be

restored. So Lord, there are many here

that need that restoration to need that

they they know that they are fully loved

and fully known and that you're with

them and wherever they're at. We pray

Lord that we would help people and be

active in this city and that more people

will come to see and to know and display

Jesus Christ in his name. Amen.

","":"
["GET
