those of you I don't know my name is

uh Jake Thomas I uh have the privilege

of uh speaking to you this morning from

the Psalms Martin Luther once had this

to say about the Psalms uh the Salter

should be precious to us if only because

it most clearly promises the death and

resurrection of Christ and describes his

kingdom and the nature and standing of

all Christian people it could well be

entitled a little bible since everything

contained in the entire Bible is

beautifully and briefly comprehended and

compacted into a

manual he continued uh it seems to me as

if the Holy Ghost has been pleased to

take on himself the trouble of putting

together a short bible touching on the

whole of Christianity in order that they

who are a unable to read the whole Bible

May nevertheless find almost the entire

Psalm comprehended in one little book

The Salter is the very Paragon of books

Luther said it is to the Psalms we come

today and to Psalm number 87 specific

specifically uh which really exemplifies

this quote from Luther within this

prophetic song we will find references

to the very Cornerstone of our faith the

intricacies of God's Redemptive

plan uh the mystery of the Gospel the

role of Christ Church and the future

glorification of that church at the end

of all things there's deep meaning in

these short seven verses there's great

theological truths that we can find here

as we get a glimpse at Zion the city of

our God uh you'll notice the psalm is

broken up quite easily into three parts

uh by the interjection saah uh this word

is not meant to be read when we see it

in the Psalms but instead it's uh to

tell us to pause take a moment to um

take a deep breath um meditate on what

we've just read and what we will

continue to read in the psalm so as I um

read the psalm you'll notice that there

and I'm not going to read it it's more

of an instruction to us uh to meditate

on God's word um with that in mind let's

turn to today's text um if you have a

Bible turn with me to Psalm 87 if not it

will be on the

screen on the holy Mount stands the city

he

founded the lord loves the gates of Zion

more than all the Dwelling Places of

Jacob glorious things of you are spoken

oh city of

God Among

those

okay among those who know me I mention

Rahab and Babylon behold Felisa and Ty

with Kush this one was born there they

say and of Zion it shall be said this

one and that one were born in her for

the most high himself will establish

her the Lord records as he registers the

peoples

this one was born

there singers and dancers alike say all

my Springs are in

you when I was 13 years old I found out

I needed

glasses uh and it's it was kind of an

unorthodox way to find out that I needed

glasses um I was playing in the first

game of a new baseball season um and

it's important for context in the story

to understand that like when you play

Little League Baseball the field kind of

gets bigger every year as you get older

um and when you turn 13 you start

playing on a field that's basically like

normal sized um what like you play on

for the rest of your life um and the

difference between the field when you're

12 and when you're 13 is really big it's

it's really big and so um for those who

are unfamiliar with the game of baseball

I was playing in the Outfield um which

was much farther from the hitter than I

was used to being um and I was nervous

it was the first game of the season but

I was ready for the opportunity to make

a play for my team um and I watched as

the pitcher threw the ball and I heard

the batter hit the ball but I had no

idea where the ball was um and I somehow

I knew the ball was coming in my

direction all the other players on my

team were looking to me and I Stood

Still and looked up in the guy hoping to

find the ball somewhere

there and as I stood there

helplessly searching the sky for the

ball it landed about 10 feet behind me

back that

way um and I ran and I got it and I was

embarrassed and I threw the ball back in

and I was like wow that was really weird

hope that doesn't happen again um the

next inning it happened two more

times um and at the end of that inning

uh I got back to the DG the The Dugout

after after the inning was over and uh

my coach uh who happened to meet my dad

um basically said you are killing us out

there what is wrong with you what's

going on and I told him I can't I can't

see the ball and he said well you need

to figure out a way to see the ball or

you're going to be on the bench I rode

the bench the rest of the game and long

story short uh we went to the eye doctor

the next day and I realized that I was

really nearsighted I couldn't see

anything that was far away from me I

needed glasses um and my dad felt really

bad about yelling at me about not being

able to F uh see the ball but uh that's

not the moral of the

story

um I still remember the first time that

I put on glasses um I walked out of the

eye doctor and the first thing I said to

my mom was is this how everybody else

sees all the time you know I could see

the leaves on the trees for the first

time I could see the shapes of the

clouds in the sky for the first time and

thankfully I could see the baseball when

it was coming towards towards me um

Psalm 87 is meant to be like eyeglasses

for us you know we live in the world um

corrupted by sin and truthfully

everything is a little blurry because of

that all of creation has been fuzzy to

us for all of our lives and Psalm 87 is

meant to be eyeglasses for us to let us

see what creation can and will be in

pure

detail when we see this city of God

described it should give us hope for a

future we get a glimpse of go God has

promised we get a glimpse of God's

glorified

Zion and we can start to see how the

church itself can reflect that Glory

even now in this short Psalm we learn

what Zion is who the citizens of Zion

are and how the citizens of Zion should

behave it's broken down into three easy

parts

the foundations of Zion the citizens of

Zion and the song of

Zion the foundations of Zion the

citizens of Zion and the song of

Zion the main point is that God founded

Zion to establish a place for his gospel

to be proclaimed and for his name to be

worshiped by people of every tribe

nation and

tongue verses 1 to 3

discuss verses 1 to 3 discuss the found

foundations of Zion in these verses we

see God's Divine initiative in

establishing Zion

himself when we read poetry in any

language the placement of words is

significant it's important um and in the

original text the first word of each of

these first three verses is an action

that God himself is doing uh in verse

war is in verse one the first word um

says that that God is founding Zion that

he's establishing Zion himself and verse

two the first word uh gives the

implication uh that God God has chosen

to love his chosen people he he has he

loves his people and he has chosen to

love them verse three um gives the

implication that um the first word gives

the implication that God

exalts the place that he chooses to

dwell above every other place and he

does so by the Glorious things that are

spoken about it by his people

God is the one who gives Zion its

significance and its

Holiness so let's return to verse one it

says on the Holy Mountain stands the

city he founded in Hebrew this verse

begins with the word uh his foundations

or the the foundations that God has

established and actually if they were if

you were to directly translate it

there's really no mention of a city it's

just the foundations of God in the Holy

mountains um now the mountains

themselves there's not like a a holy

mountain that exists on Earth that's

holy because of it being a mountain it's

holy because God has established himself

there he chooses to dwell there and he

has established the foundations there uh

God himself founded Zion not the people

of Israel or the church um in this verse

it's it's talking about the city of

Jerusalem which um God chose to be his

dwelling place within this the nation of

Israel um during the time that this

Psalm was written uh now the people of

Israel didn't even build the city of

Jerusalem but God made it significant he

made it his Zion when he chose to set up

his Dwelling Place there his

Temple God himself is the one who

established and laid his foundations he

has set it apart for his purpose his

will and his worship uh found

inspiration in this Psalm to pen another

hymn titled glorious things of thee are

spoken uh it's a beautiful hymn that

understands that this Psalm has a lot to

say about the relationship that uh God

has with his church and the way that his

church can exist in the world

today in that hymn uh Newton writes this

line uh on the Rock of Ages

founded I love the connection that's

Newton is making between um the

foundations of Zion in this Psalm and

the Cornerstone of the

church Christ is that Cornerstone Isaiah

28:16 which we read earlier here Builds

on this idea it

says it

says therefore thus says the Lord God

behold I am the one who has laid as a

foundation in Zion a stone a tested

Stone a precious Cornerstone of a sure

Foundation whoever believes will not be

in

haste a tested Stone a precious

Cornerstone in other words a living

Stone rejected by men but in the sight

of God Chosen and

Precious on Christ the solid rock we

stand all other ground is sinking sand

as the old song

goes Jesus is our foundation he is the

stone that the builders rejected that

has become the Cornerstone upon which

the whole Church of God is

built when he when the storms rage when

the enemy surrounds it's on the

foundation of Christ that we stand and

we remain strong our foundations hold

strong if we stand upon

Christ in the book of Ephesians Paul

discusses this truth and the sign

significance it has for the church uh in

verses 19 20 through 22 of chapter 2 um

he says this so then you are no longer

strangers and Aliens but you are fellow

citizens with the Saints and members of

the household of God built on the

foundation of the Apostles and Prophets

Christ Jesus himself being the

Cornerstone in whom the whole structure

being joined together grows into a holy

Temple in the Lord in him you are also

being built together into a dwelling

place for God by the

spirit the church itself not the

physical building not this room that

we're in right

now but the body of

Believers each of us in this room are

being built into a holy Temple for the

Lord we have become the spiritual

embodiment of God's holy Zion

his Dwelling Place his

temple built on the foundation of his

sacrifice the sacrifice of his son

Jesus that sacrifice is the greatest

example of God's love that we have um as

we move to verse

two we see this love

described verse two reads the lord loves

the gates of Zion more than all the

Dwelling Places of

Jacob the first word here is the is one

of the Hebrew words for

love uh but not just any love uh this

love is God's elective love there is a

sense of of election here there is a

sense of God's Divine Choice here uh God

has chosen to love Zion more than any of

the other Dwelling Places of of Jacob um

Zion Jerusalem was not the only place

within the people of Israel that God was

worshiped but God has chosen it to be

his place of

dwelling in his love in his elective

love God shows his love for his people

by choosing them by choosing them for

himself it's a consequence of God's

Divine initiative and Sovereign choice

that the Glorious things of Zion are

spoken uh it may be odd to read at first

that God loves the gates of the city

more than any other Dwelling Place of J

Jacob uh not that not the temple um not

a worship site uh but I think there's

significance here when we see the term

Gates uh what we should take from that

is that what what we what the psalmist

is saying is um that God loves the very

heart and soul of the people of Israel

uh the gates were more than just where

people entered and exited the city um

that was where uh the the elders talked

about what the laws should be for the

people it's where they uh heard

petitions uh it's where the worship of

God was outlined um it's where

people gathered and talked about uh

things and um where people sold and

bought Goods is where they did everyday

life the significance here is that God

is choosing to love the very heart and

soul of the people not some pedestal

that's set us off to the side but where

everyone comeing comes and goes where

everyone does their everyday

life he's dwelling with them in their

midst he is not off some place different

to be looked at far away he's dwelling

within their

midst when speaking about these verses

Charles Spurgeon had this to this to say

uh where God Reveals His love the most

there should each believer most Delight

to be

found God Reveals His love most in

choosing his

church can you say that you Delight to

be found in his

church do you look forward to uh the

Gathering of Believers every week

or is it just something else that you

know you have to check off your to-do

list God has poured out his love and his

Spirit on the church when we Embrace

that spirit and experience that love

there's no other place we would rather

be when we truly understand the benefits

of God's elective love it can change us

completely uh verse three talks

about how the city of God is exalted and

glorified it reads glorious things of

you are spoken oh city of

God great honorable glorious things are

spoken of the city of God because God is

the one who exalted it uh the the use of

the Hebrew word that's translated Spoken

Here gives the idea that even though the

people of Zion are the ones saying these

glorious things that God is the one who

gave them those words to say God is the

one who exalts Zion

himself God has Glory ious things to say

about his Dwelling

Place how do you speak about

it how do you speak about the Lord's

church do you focus on its shortcomings

and

failures now I know that the church has

many failures throughout its long

history uh I'm not trying to imply that

the church doesn't have anything that it

needs to repent for the truth is that

the church is filled with people who are

sinners and who fight an eternal battle

daily between the Flesh and the spirit

so people within the church are going to

do wrong

things but God still chooses to love his

church that's the place he chooses to

dwell not within the building God is not

not dwelling in this building when we're

when we're not

here God chooses to dwell within the

heart and soul of each and every

believer

the church is still the vehicle for the

proclamation of God's

gospel and the Hub of God's

worship blemishes in

all God Delights in his church he loves

his church do

you as we move to verse four we enter

the second portion of this Psalm the

citizens of

Zion verse four reads among those who

know me I mentioned Rahab and Babylon

behold philistia and

Ty with Kush this one was born there

they

say here we have a list of Nations but

not just any Nations the Nations

included here are all enemies of the

people of Israel we begin with uh Rahab

which we should associate with Egypt um

the writer is using the term Rahab to to

represent Egypt here

um and Babylon the two greatest

oppressors of the people of Israel

throughout their history the Egyptians

Enslaved the Israelites first

Generations the Babylonians

exiled the Israelites from their

Homeland we continue with the

Philistines the constant thorn in the

side of the Israelites during their uh

era of prominence the era of prosperity

in the promised land the list continues

with uh the people of Ty and Kush Kush

was uh modern day Ethiopia these were

two powerful city states uh in the of

the Ancient World um the one to the

north one to the south of Israel uh

these nations were constantly trying to

lure the Israelites away from worship of

God with their worldliness and

idolatry So In Sum we have enemies to

the north south east and west and from

within of Israel

but this is not a Psalm where God is uh

promising judgment on the enemies of

Israel this is a Psalm where each of

these nations is included in the

Zion this is

miraculous these Gentile Nations will

become citizens of the people of

God they will be able to enter the place

where God chooses to

dwell they will be able to become people

of the

Covenant Paul calls this the great

mystery of the Gospel in Ephesians he

says in Ephesians

36 this mystery is that the Gentiles who

are are fellow heirs members of the same

body Jesus partakers of the promise in

Christ Jesus Through The Gospel through

the death of Jesus we are no longer

strangers and Aliens as we read

earlier but we are a chosen people a

holy nation a people for God's Own

desire a people of God's own

choosing through Christ even though we

are from different countries we have

different skin colors we speak different

languages we come from different

religious

backgrounds even though all of those

things are true we are still building

being built up together into the Temple

of the one true

God isn't that

amazing each of us in this room should

be particularly thankful ful uh for this

mystery because we we should be included

in this list of enemies of the people of

Israel and the people of God we're all

Gentiles but through the sacrifice of

Jesus we can become co-s of the Covenant

God has made with his chosen

people God did not wait for us to be

drawn to his holy city by the Glorious

things that were said about it instead

he came to us when we were still far

away when we had rejected him when we

had turned our backs on him when we ran

away from

him Romans 5 8-10 says but God shows his

love for

us and that while we were still sinners

Christ died for us since therefore we

have now been justified by his blood

much more shall we be saved by him from

the wrath of God for while we were

enemies we were reconciled to God by the

death of his son much more now that we

are reconciled shall we be saved by his

life God saved us even though we

rejected

him even though we walked

away even though we were his

enemies what a beautiful gift of Grace

this

is uh there are three main things that I

think we can take away from this truth

the first is that no one is disqualified

from citiz citizenship in Zion this list

of Nations includes the greatest

oppressors and idolators of the ancient

world

yet to each of them God extends the gift

of citizenship citizenship in

Zion on the other hand aren't we so

quick to

judge we eliminate people all the time

that we believe are too far gone to be

saved we say to ourselves it isn't worth

having that conversation because they're

never going to turn back from their

ways so often we group ourselves with

the citizens of Zion and and we are part

of the citizens of Zion but we forget

that we were once enemies of

God we were ones equal of equal standing

with Babylon and Egypt and philistia and

Ty and

Kush do not be so quick to condemn

others when you yourself deserve to be

condemned if not for God's grace you too

would stand

condemned so understand this no one is

beyond salvation

no one is beyond

Redemption no one is too far gone that

they cannot receive

Grace God's grace is sufficient for all

Jesus blood is sufficient for all

sin the second thing that we should see

here as the basis for the citizenship in

Zion uh it's listed three times once in

each

verse did you see it it's

birth Now isn't that interesting how can

birth

be what includes Us in citizens of been

Zion when all of these nations come from

different places they're of different

people

groups I I am I have American

citizenship there are lots of people in

this room that don't have American

citizenship you have citizenship in

different countries and we all have

different benefits because of those

things because we've born in different

places but here people from different

places receive the same benefit even

through birth

so how can it be

birth that seals our citizenship and the

people of God we should be immediately

reminded of the conversation that Jesus

has with Nicodemus in John

3 Nicodemus is a Pharisee he's a

religious person he knows the the the

Bible he has read it cover to cover he's

memorized it he comes to Jesus

questioning what little thing he needs

to change so that he can be assured that

he is included in the people of God and

Jesus flips his world upside down Jesus

tells him you don't need a small fix you

need to be completely reborn you have to

become a new person to be in to be in

part of the people of

God what does Jesus say he says unless

one is born again he cannot see the

kingdom of

God Nicodemus is perplexed he thinks

that Jesus is talking about a physical

birth he's talking about he thinks he's

talking about rein ing again into his

mother's womb and being going through

the process of birth again but that's

not what Jesus is talking about Jesus is

talking about the fact that we have to

experience a spiritual rebirth we should

become spiritually refreshed spiritually

new to become a part of God's

kingdom we must become new people the

old must pass away and the spirit must

take hold in your life and make you into

a completely new

creation now you may be sitting here

today

and you may know that you were far from

God you may know that you're not

following God you're not seeking him

you've turned your back on him you may

have run away from

him you've heard this all before you've

heard the gospel many times you know

everything but you haven't been reborn

see the thing about these two scenarios

is they're not different both of the

people in these scenarios have to

experience rebirth they have to be

reborn through the spirit to become new

people verse six of our Psalm says the

Lord registers as he records as he

registers the people this one was born

there you cannot receive the benefits of

the citizenship in Zion unless God has

written your name in The Book of Life in

his record book is your name in that

book of

life have you been Reborn

have you become a new

creation the third and final takeaway we

have from this section uh is our

responsibility considering this truth

the truth that people of Any Nation can

become citizens in the citizens of

Zion it's our missionary

hope we know that the picture painted in

Psalm 87 and echoed in Isaiah 2 and

Revelation 4 is going to come back come

to pass what began at Pentecost when the

spirit was poured out on the apostles

and they spoke in many tongues will come

to fruition fruition at the end of all

things there will come a day when people

of every nation and tongue will worship

Before the Throne of God

together but how is that going to happen

how is that going to come to

pass Romans Romans 101 14-15 says

this In this passage Paul is

wondering how it's going to come how

this is going to come to pass

himself he says how then will they call

on him in whom they have not believed

and how are they to believe in him of

whom they have never heard and how are

they to hear without someone

preaching and how are they to preach

unless they are

sent as it is written how beautiful are

the feet of those who preach the good

news it is our responsibility to take

the gospel to those who have never heard

it before

Jesus told us to Go Make Disciples of

all Nations he told us to be his

Witnesses in Jerusalem Judea Samaria and

to the ends of the

Earth let me ask you would you consider

yourself Jesus witness to the people in

your

life when was the last time you had a

conversation about the gospel with

someone when was the last time you

invited someone to

church how long has it been since you

shared the good news

news it is our greatest joy to share the

good news with those who have never

heard it

before our hope is that we may see some

of those people worshiping around the

Throne of God With Us One

Day the final section of our Psalm the

song of Zion contains just one verse it

says singers and dancers alike say all

my Springs are in you it's a picture of

Celebration it's a picture of

Joy Paul says rejoice in the lord always

again I say

rejoice when we understand the gift of

God's grace the beauty in our spiritual

rebirth and the benefits of citiz

citizenship in Zion our only response

should be

Joy When We Gather on a Sunday our

attitude should be typified by

joy we should not allow ourselves to be

brought down by the the trials and

tribulations we face in this world but

when we gather together experience the

joy of the gathered body of

Believers even though we remain in this

world we know we are not of this world

we live now experiencing a foraste of

future Glory the proverbial already but

not yet find your joy and your hope in

the promises of

God the celebratory song in this verse

is that all my Springs are in you

this most likely means something to the

effect of all my all the blessings of

citizenship citizenship in Zion are in

you but I think there's significance to

the fact that that water is used to

symbolize that I'm reminded of the

conversation that Jesus had with a

Samaritan woman at a well where he told

her I can give you water that will never

make you thirst

again Jesus is that Living

Water Jesus will take away your thirst

he is the source of all of our blessings

of all the promises of

God the celebration we see in this verse

is a picture of the one that is to come

Revelation 19

6-9 talks about that beautiful Feast

that is to come at the marriage supper

Lamb one day the citizens citizens of

Zion will be fully United with the

founder of Zion and we will sing the

song of Zion together

the New Jerusalem the New Zion will be a

place where God truly dwells with his

people Revelation

21 describes the city having the glory

of God its Radiance like a most rare

Jewel verses 23- 27 say and I saw no

temple in the city for its Temple is the

Lord God the almighty and the lamb and

the city has no need of sun or moon to

shine on it for the glory of God gives

it light and its lamp is the Lamb by its

light will the Nations walk and the

kings of the earth will bring their

Glory into it and its Gates will never

be shut by day and there will be no

night there they will bring into it the

glory and honor of the Nations but

nothing unclean will ever enter it nor

anyone who does what is detestable or

false but only those who are written in

the Lamb's Book of

Life God himself will dwell in this new

Zion he will be the place of

worship he will be its light and its

lamp and in it a river filled with the

Water of Life will

run what a beautiful picture for the

future citizens of

Zion those whose names are written in

the book of

life so as we sit here today remember

that

God the one who founded and established

Zion has given us the opportunity

through his elective love to become

citizens of Zion even though we rejected

him and as we gather as his church each

week we get a foretaste of the glory

that is to

come we get to sing the song of Zion

together in his church we get a get a

glimpse of what awaits us as chosen

Zion one day we will feast in the house

of

Zion one day we will sing with our

hearts

restored we will glorify ify his name

together and we will feast and weep no

more

amen let's

pray father God we all we praise you as

the almighty founder of

Zion we thank you for choosing to love

us we thank you for sending your son to

be a holy and perfect sacrifice for us

even though we were your enemies

we praise you for in your sovereignty

you made your son the foundation on

which your church is built we thank you

for giving us the opportunity to become

citizens of your kingdom for giving us

the benefits of that

citizenship Lord let our lives reflect

the joy in your song every day let us

ref reflect the beauty of your holy city

When We Gather each Sunday father we

love you in Jesus name we pray amen

","":
Grace
