Psalm 89 is a interesting Psalm uh

because it combines a hym of Praise with

a lament and a lament in the psalm is a

poem or a song that expresses uh deep

sorrow or some type of complaint in

Psalm 89 that the hymn comes first in

order to help us understand the lament

and so we're supposed to use the hymn as

a GU or a tool um during times when we

wrestle with God's promises

one of our uh favorite books to read to

our children is titled big truths for

little

kids and the book's two main characters

are Caleb and Cassie they are siblings

and each chapter is a story about some

experience that they have throughout the

day and one day Caleb and his friend uh

James they go to visit James's dad at

his office and James dad owns a a huge

candy company and he has promised to to

take the boys and to give a tour to the

boys so that they can go and see what

the The Candy Factory is

like um the candy company has a main

office uh downtown on the the the top of

a high-rise building and the two young

boys enter the building and take the

elevator to the top and they walk to the

door of James dad's office and James

goes to reach for the door knob and

Caleb asks him are you sure that we can

go in James response is yes I'm sure my

dad loves me and he has told me that I

can come in anytime that I want to and

so they enter James's dad's office to to

find him in an important meeting with

the top Executives of the candy

company and James he runs and hugs his

dad and his dad hugs him but Caleb stays

at the door because he doesn't know

James's dad he doesn't know what how he

will respond because he in this

important

meeting James's dad was was in an

important meeting and he told the

executives we'll have to postpone our

meeting today for another time because

I've promised my son I will take him and

his friend for a tour of the Candy

Factory James's dad was in an important

meeting but because he loves his son he

postponed the meeting to make good on

his promise

Caleb had stopped at the door because he

didn't know James's dad and how he would

respond but James on the other hand he

knew his dad's love for him and that his

dad would cancel the meeting because he

had promised him the candy factory

tour and so we'll see in our text this

afternoon that God's covenant

faithfulness and love for his son Jesus

assures us that he will fulfill all of

his kingdom promises he has made to us

so with this in mind let's look at our

text for this

afternoon I will sing of the steadfast

love of the Lord forever with my mouth I

will make known your faithfulness to all

generations for I said steadfast love

will be build up forever in the heavens

you will establish your faithfulness you

have said I have made a covenant with my

chosen one I have sworn to David my

servant I will establish your Offspring

forever ever and build your throne for

all

generations let the heavens praise your

wonders oh lord your faithfulness in the

Assembly of the Holy ones for who in the

skies can be compared to the Lord who

among the Heavenly beings is like the

Lord a god greatly to be feared in the

counsel of the Holy ones and awesome

above all who are around

him oh Lord God of hosts who is mighty

as you are oh Lord with your faith fa

fness all around you you rule the Raging

of the sea when its waves rise you steal

them you crush Rahab like a carcass you

scattered your enemies with your Mighty

arm the heavens are yours the Earth also

is yours the world and all that is in in

it you have founded them the North and

the South you have created them tabar

and Herman joyously praise your name you

have a mighty arm arm strong is your

hand High your right hand righteousness

and Justice are the foundation of your

throne steadfast love and faithfulness

go before you blessed are the people who

know the feal shout who walk O Lord in

the light of your face who exalt in your

name all the day and in your

righteousness are exalted for you are

the glory of their strength by your

favor our horn is exalted for our Shield

be Belongs to the Lord are keing to the

Holy One of Israel of old you spoke in a

vision to your Godly one and said I have

granted help to one who is mighty I have

exalted one chosen from the people I

have found David my servant with my holy

oil I have anointed him so that my hand

shall be established with him my arm

also shall strengthen him the enemy

shall not outwit him the wicked shall

not humble him I will crush his foes

before for him and strike down those who

hate him my faithfulness and my

steadfast love shall be with him and in

my name shall his horn be exalted I will

set his hand on the sea and his right

hand on the rivers he shall cry to me

you are my father my God and the rock of

my salvation and I will make him the

firstborn the highest of the kings of

the earth my steadfast love I will keep

for him forever and my Covenant will

stand firm for him I will establish his

offspring forever and his throne as the

days of the heavens if his children

forsake my law and do not walk according

to my rules if they violate my statutes

and do not keep my Commandments then I

will punish their transgression with a

rod and their iniquity with stripes but

I will not remove from him my steadfast

love or be false to my

faithfulness I will not violate my

Covenant or alter the word that went

forth from my lips once for all I have

sworn by my Holiness I will not lie to

David his offspring shall endure forever

his throne as long as the sun before me

like the Moon it shall be established

forever a faithful witness in the

skies but now you have cast off and

rejected you were full of Wrath against

your anointed you have renounced the

Covenant with your your servant you have

defiled his crown in the dust you have

breached all his walls you have laid his

strongholds in Ruins all who pass by

plunder him he has become the scorn of

his neighbors you have exalted the right

hand of his foes you have made all his

enemies Rejoice you have also turned

back the edge of his sword and you have

not made him stand in battle you have

made his Splendor to cease and cast his

thr to the ground you have cut short the

days of his youth you had covered him

with shame how long oh Lord will you

hide your face forever how long will

your wrath burned like fire remember how

short My Time is what man can live and

never see death who can deliver his soul

from the power of shol Lord where is

your steadfast love of old which by your

faithfulness you swore to David remember

oh Lord how your servants are mocked and

how I bear in my heart that insults of

all the many nations with which your

enemies mock oh Lord with which they

mock the footsteps of your

anointed blessed be the Lord forever

amen and

amen the grass withers and the flower

Fades but the word of Our Lord stands

forever let's look first at the the hymn

In Our Psalm and see what it teaches us

about God the first thing teaches us

about God is that God is mighty and that

he rules over all

things in verse n we

read you rule the Raging of the sea when

its waves rise you steal them and so the

psalmist says the Lord rules over the

Sea's waves and he is showing that God

is in control of the sea god is

governing the sea the Lord has power

over the sea which is one of the most

powerful n uh forces in nature and since

God is in control of one of the most

powerful forces in nature it shows us

that he is in control of all things in

nature next we see in verse 10 you crush

Rahab like a carcass you scattered your

enemies with your Mighty

arm Rahab was a nickname for Egypt and

so the psalmist is most likely referring

to Egypt since Egypt was a great power

during that time

the psalmist is showing us that the Lord

has control over even the mightiest of

Nations even the strongest of

nations in verses 11 through1 13 we read

the heavens are yours the Earth also is

yours the world and all that is in it

you have founded them the North and the

South you have created them tabar and

Herman joyously praise your name you

have a mighty arm strong as your hand

High your right hand

and so God is the owner of all things

and he does as he pleases with his

creation Now psalmist understands God is

in control of all things and that God is

is working all things according to his

plan and God's

Desires in verses 38 through 35 or 45

the pmates acknowledges that even the

DraStic situation that they are in is

part of God's plan and is part of God's

control almost every one of the verses

that we see in verses 38- 45 has God as

the subject doing the

action you you have breached all of his

walls you have laid his strongholds in

ruin you have exalted the right hand of

his foes and so the psalmist is showing

us that God has power and control over

all things which means that he has the

power and the ability to give us all

that he has promised

us and in the case of this Lament

provide the protection and the security

from our enemies that we all

desire we also see in verse uh

14 after the uh psalmist has established

that God is ruling over everything he

looks at how God rules in verse 14 we

read righteousness and Justice are the

foundation of your

throne and so the Lord rules in a

righteous and in a just way

this means that he will not rule and act

in an evil way so we can trust that his

actions and his words are meant for good

we can trust that all of his promises

are true and that he will fulfill all of

them because of his uh righteousness and

his

Justice the psalmist also mentions God's

steadfast love and faithfulness in verse

14 steadfast love and faithfulness go

before

you God's steadfast love and

faithfulness speak to his promises to us

we are God's people and as we will see

nothing will keep God from pouring out

his love upon us and being faithful to

his promises he has made to us not even

our sin and

unworthiness God's characteristics that

are described in verse 14 prove to us

that he is trustworthy and

reliable and uh as you have experienced

this is a a very long Psalm and the

writer has taken up a lot of space to

communicate to us about God's

character and why did he do

this it is because as we will see later

God's character is the Firm Foundation

on which we place our hope that God will

fulfill all of his promises to us the

psalmist is building a case like a

lawyer might do for why we can trust in

the Lord

God's promises are only as good as his

character and so we want to know God's

character well so that when life gets

rough and God's promises don't seem to

make sense that we can trace them back

to his character as our sure and steady

foundation and know that we can trust in

his promises because we know that we can

trust him knowing God's character it

strengthens our faith and our hope in

God's promises

and now that we've looked at at our god

let's look at his

promises in verses 19 through 37 we read

about the Covenant promises that God

made to his people God promised to to

show favor to his anointed one David and

his line of kingly

descendants and in blessing the anointed

one in the line of descendants he would

bless all of the nation of

Israel he would make Israel the the

greatest nation among all the nation

because of his love for the anointed one

and he promised that he would provide

security from their enemies because of

his faithfulness to the anointed one and

he promised that he would never back out

of the promises he had made to them no

matter what happened which again was

based on his love for the anointed

one all the promises that God made to

Israel that we see in our text today

they apply to us because all the

promises were ultimately pointing

forward to Jesus and his

kingdom and these verses paint a basic

but a very beautiful picture of how

great Christ's Kingdom will be when he

returns Christ will rule and reign in a

way that provides complete Security from

our enemies and there will be peace

throughout the

kingdom Christ will be exalted among the

Nations he will sit on his throne

forever and we will worship him forever

and as I I mentioned earlier this Psalm

combines a hym of Praise with a

lament and so now uh let's look at the

the the lament part of this

Psalm let's look at verses 30 through

32 if his children forsake my law and do

not W walk according to my rules if they

violate my statutes and do not keep my

Commandments then I will punish their

transgression with The Rock

and their iniquity was

stripes and so all the the blessings

that God promised in the Covenant he

made with David they center around God

showing his steadfast love and

faithfulness to the kingly line of

descendants the future kings of Israel

they must obey God's law for Israel to

experience all the blessings of the

Covenant if they did not then the nation

as a whole would suffer and this is what

has happened in this Psalm that the

Kings who came after David they didn't

walk in the ways of the Lord as we see

in verse 46 the Wrath of the Lord burned

against

them and so our our problem as God's

people is that we are

sinful Romans 3:10 through2 makes this

clear as it is written none is righteous

no not one no one understands no one

seeks for God

so the problem in Psalm 89 is that the

is not that the Lord has been unfaithful

to his Covenant promises the problem is

the unfaithfulness of the anointed

Kings the problem is a failure of human

kingship and so what do we need we need

a righteous King can who can obey all of

God's Commandments and represent us

before the Lord and for God to fulfill

his Covenant promises he must provide a

righteous King to rule over us because

we cannot provide one for

ourselves and this lament like many of

the other laments in the The Book of

Psalms is filled with pain and confusion

and difficulty of living in the broken

world that we live in but in the midst

of all this there is hope and so look

let's look now at where our hope is

found where do we find Our Hope in this

psalm

in verses 30-32 we saw the consequences

for the future King's

Disobedience and right after this in

verse uh right after verse 32 we see God

reaffirm his promise to

David in verses uh 33 through

37 we read but I will not remove from

him my steadfast love or be false to my

Covenant or alter the word that that

went forth from my lips once for all I

have sworn by my Holiness I will not lie

to David his offspring shall endure

forever his throne as long as the sun

before me like the Moon it shall be

established forever a faithful witness

in the skies and so we find Our Hope in

this text from God's character

specifically in his steadfast love and

his faithfulness for his anointed one

the Lord has made a promise and swor an

oath to David and he will not break it

because that is not who God

is and God continued to to give his

people hope-filled messages like

Jeremiah 23 5-6 while they waited for

him to restore the kingship in the

Kingdom behold the days are coming

declares the Lord when I will raise up

for David A righteous branch and he

shall reign as king and deal wisely and

shall execute Justice and righteousness

in the land in his days Judah will be

saved and Israel will dwell securely and

this is the name by which he will be

called the Lord is our

righteousness and when we get to to the

New Testament we see the arrival of our

righteous King God had promised in Acts

1322 through 23 we read and when he had

removed him he raised up David to be

their king of whom he testified and said

said I have found in David the son of

Jesse a man after my heart who will do

all my will of this man's Offspring God

has brought to Israel a savior Jesus as

he

promised and so God has provided the the

righteous King that we need and he has

proven his steadfast love and his

faithfulness to his anointed one Jesus

and so we can trust him to make good on

all the other promises that he has given

to us in Scripture

because we have seen God's steadfast

love and faithfulness to provide the

king that we

need and Christ is our our righteous

king and the Lord will never reject him

as he did the other Kings of Israel that

broke his

law God is well pleased with him and

will fulfill every one of his promises

he has made to us because of his

pleasure in his son Jesus

Christ and let's look last ly at our

weight this Psalm gives Israel great

hope but it doesn't give Israel a

resolution the psalm ends with Israel

Waiting for God to to answer their

prayer to restore the the kingship and

the

kingdom and we are like God's people in

the psalmist day that we too are waiting

for God to fulfill all of his kingdom

promises and as we wait we can struggle

with God's

promises we can un struggle to

understand how God will fulfill them to

us we can encounter a paradox like the

psalmist and struggle to see how God's

promises and our experiences though

seemingly at odds with each other can

dovetail and fit perfectly together and

we can also struggle to believe that

they are

true and so what do we do whenever we

struggle with God's

promises when we are struggling to

understand and believe God's promises we

need to meditate on God's character and

this is why the psalmist has placed the

hymn before the lament in this Psalm the

first part of this Psalm which is the

hymn of praise is meant to be a tool or

a guide for this

lament when we are struggling with God's

kingdom promises one of the first things

that we should do is pull out a Psalm

like Psalm 89 that speaks of God's

character and meditate upon him

the psalmist lament that we find in

verses

38-35 is that God's promises didn't

match up with what he was

experiencing in fact they seem like

Polar Opposites God had promised to

protect Israel but Israel's walls had

been broken down by her

enemies Israel's King was supposed to

have honor among the Nations but now

Kings from other nations mock him the

psalmist is confused because David's

Kingdom doesn't see seem like how God

had promised it it would look and part

of David's appeal to God that we find in

46-51 is to God's character in verse 49

he says Lord where is your steadfast

love of old which by your faithfulness

you swore to David and so the psalmist

do doesn't know how to make sense of

this tension but he still clings to the

Lord during his time of

confusion he knows the Lord's character

character and he knows he will be

faithful to his

promises and the words steadfast love

and faithfulness they are mentioned a

total of 15 times in this Psalm and so

they are the the Bedrock or they are the

the Firm Foundation that all of God's

promises sit on and we can count on

God's promises because we can count on

God's steadfast love and faithfulness to

his anointed

one we also know that God is mighty and

he is working all things out according

to his great plan and so we can trust

that God can and will fulfill all of his

promises that he has made to us in his

perfect

timing another thing that we should do

When we struggle with God's promises is

to pray honestly for God to act based on

character one thing that I appreciate

about appreciate about the the Psalms is

just how honest the psalmist are with

the struggles and with the issues they

have with God God the psalmist like

Ethan the the azerite are not afraid to

express strong emotions to God in verses

38 through 39 he says but now you have

cast off and rejected you were full of

Wrath against your anointed you have

renounced the Covenant with your servant

you have defiled his crown in the

dust he is saying to God God it seemed

like and it feels like you have put an

end to your Covenant

in verses 40-45 he again list all the

reasons he feels this way it's because

he feels the Lord has done the opposite

of what he promised he promised the king

protection but instead of pro providing

protection God has broken down the

strongholds that protected

Israel instead of exalting him among the

Nations he has made his enemies to

Rejoice over him the psalmist complains

that God has gone back on his word he is

brutally honest with God in the way that

he feels

God has promised that these things would

not happen but in the psalmist mind they

have and God inspired the psalmist to

write this Psalm include an honest

lament like this in it God wants us to

express our emotions to him even the

laments that we have about his

promises we pray honestly to the Lord

and we pray for God to act based on his

character in verses four uh

46-51 the psalmist makes an appeal for

God to act on the promises he has made

to David uh and restore the kingdom in

verse 46 he says how long oh Lord will

you hide yourself

forever when the psalmist says God is

hiding he is saying God is not acting on

promises in verses 47 through 51 there

are three appeals that the psalmist make

to God for God to

act and these appeals are based on God's

promises and his

character in verses 47 through 48 we we

read remember how short My Time is what

man can live and never see death who can

deliver his soul from the power of shol

in verse

49 it speaks of God's character Lord

where is your steadfast love of old

which by your faithfulness you swore to

David and then again in verses 50

through 51 it speaks of God's promises

remember oh Lord how your servants are

mocked and how I bear in my heart the

insults of all the many nations with

which your enemies mock oh Lord with

which they mock the footsteps of your

anointed and so when the psalmist says

remember these things he is saying act

upon these things Lord the psalmist

appeals for God to act uh based on his

short life God had promised that the

kingdom of David would last forever and

the psalmist doesn't see that in his

generation God had promised that there

would be a king on the throne of David

forever and so the psalmist is not

seeing this he's saying God act remain

faithful to your character to your

love he also appeals on the basis of

other nations mocking God and his

people God had promised that his people

would have been exalted would be exalted

among the other nations

and then in verse 49 the psalmist brings

God's character into the prayer once

again to remind us that our hope for God

acting is based on his

character so when we pray for God to act

based on his character Our Hope in God

acting and fulfilling his promises are

strengthened the last thing I want to

look at um that we should do when we are

wrestling with God's promises are to

praise the

Lord Psalm 89 is book in by worship in

verse uh four in verse one uh we read I

will sing of the steadfast love of the

Lord forever with my mouth I will make

known your faithfulness to all

generations and then in verse 52 blessed

be the Lord

forever the psalmist doesn't understand

how God is being faithful to his

promises while at the same time he is

experiencing what he is experiencing he

is seeing the ruin of the davidic

kingdom it doesn't seem to fit together

and it doesn't make sense to to him but

in the midst of his confusion and

struggling with God's promises he

worships the Lord because he knows the

Lord's

character he knows the Lord's steadfast

love and faithfulness to his anointed

one and he will not let what he sees as

an inconsistency between God's promises

and his experience keep him from

praising

God as we go throughout life we will

struggle and wrestle with God's promises

and we like the psalmist may think that

we see inconsistencies between God's

promises and what we

experience at other times we may not be

content with the kingdom promises that

God gives us in the here and the now we

may experience a situation in life that

is so far what from what God has

promised to give us in the future that

it creates this tension that we don't

know how to

resolve the promises that he has given

us now may seem like they are not enough

and may question in God why he has not

given us more and promised us more we

may at times find ourselves saying God

if you going to give me this great big

promise in the future this great big

cake why not just sprinkle a little more

of that promise as bread clums along the

way and have you ever felt like this

before when I first arrived in Thailand

I I met a a refugee couple from

Afghanistan and we met for a couple of

months

we met once a week to to pray together

and to study the book of Romans and

during one of our meetings the husband

asked me to pray for his wife because

his wife had lost one of her best

friends in Afghanistan over the weekend

her friend was attending a church

service and a man walked in to the

church with a bomb strapped to him and

set it

off and she asked me why why would God

allow this to happen to a

Christian and I can still remember and I

can still feel the

I had in my throat as we walked through

this together uh we talked about how

this was a great evil and how in God's

sovereignty it was still part of God's

plan we talked about God's justice and

how he allows people to the experience

the consequence of our sin which is

physical death on

Earth we talked about how God never

promises to keep his people from

experiencing all attacks of evil on

Earth

and we also looked at God's character as

we have done

today and at the end of our conversation

my friend understood everything we had

talked about in her mind what we had

talked about about it made biblical

sense if aan were to give her a theology

test and there was a question on it

asking her if there were any theological

inconsistencies between God's promises

given in his word and what she had

experienced she would have have said no

there are no inconsistencies unlike the

psalmist who didn't understand how his

experience and God's promises fit

together but like the psalmist she would

have said it sure feels like there is if

I could put words in her mouth and speak

for her I think she would have said it

sure seems like God should promise more

and do more for his people in the here

and the now and things like this

shouldn't happen and my friend was

struggling with ATT tension that

couldn't be resoled saw between God's

kingdom promises that he will F uh fully

fulfill in the future and her experience

in the here and the

now she understood biblically how God

could allow this to happen but in her

heart she couldn't reconcile the two so

the tension

remained in our time of prayer that day

it was filled with lament about the

tension that we all felt um but also it

was uh a time of of praising the Lord

and having hope hope in God's

character and so as we go throughout

life and we struggle with God's promises

we need to do as the psalmist has done

here and bring both our laments and our

praises to the Lord side by

side as a psalmist demonstrates When we

struggle with God's promises we should

make praising him a

priority is it always Pleasant is it

always easy is it always natural no but

is what our hearts need the most and it

is what this Psalm encourages us to

do we know God's character we know that

he is worthy of honor even though at

times we can't make sense of his

promises or understand

them so brothers and sisters God is

mighty he is loving he is faithful he is

righteous and he is just and he has

provided a righteous King For Us in

Jesus his son and he finds pleasure in

him and we can trust Our God to be

faithful to all that he has promised us

in him and in times When we struggle to

believe or to understand his kingdom

promises let us meditate upon his

character let us go to him in honest

prayer and ask him to F fill all of his

promises and let us give him the praise

and the honor that he deserves let's

pray dear heavenly father as we medit

meditate upon your character in this uh

Psalm as we look at this hymn of praise

dear Lord we are amazed by your

greatness you are Mighty uh you are

loving you are faithful you are

trustworthy you are

reliable so I just pray that you will

continue to teach us more about your

character uh teach us more about the

promises that you have promised to us uh

in your anointed one your son Jesus

Christ

I pray that as we go through difficult

times in life and as we experience

things that may uh make us think that

your promises and the things that we

experience in life are

inconsistent I pray that we will turn to

your character I pray that you will

strengthen our faith in you and I pray

that you will strengthen our faith in

your

promises we thank you for your steadfast

love and faithfulness that you've shown

to us in the sun because you love him so

much much uh you love us we pray all

this in Jesus name amen

","":
Grace
