text this evening is from Psalm

90 at Grace City if you've been here you

know we are going through a series in

the Psalms in fact we do 10 Psalms a

year and this is Psalm 90 so I'll let

you do the math on how many years we've

been doing that so this is the last

Psalm we'll do this year this calendar

year before we pick up next

year now the Psalms uh many of you know

this and some of you may

not let us be reminded that the Psalms

are

songs just like we've been singing this

evening already this afternoon already

the Psalms are songs and so it's helpful

to remember when we read the Psalms that

we're reading something that was written

thousands of years ago and it was

written with the intent to Be Sung unto

God to be sung in Praise of God and just

as singing is so

expressive and it stirs our hearts in

the same way in the Psalms we find the

full range of human

emotion so if you read the Psalms and as

we read the psalm tonight you might hear

joyful words of Praise just exuberant

praise and worship of God but also you

will read psalms and tonight we'll read

also of of

Anguish of

Anger of

confusion of

fear you could say that we see our own

lives in the

Psalms we see our own lives our own

hearts on display in the Psalms the

Psalms keep us honest they keep us

honest because a sincere reading of a

Psalm of the Psalms it lends us and it

leads us actually to really

reflect on our own lives in light of

what we're reading and before we read I

want us to ask I want to ask us

something something of each of

us what are the major

thoughts that have occupied your heart

your mind recently even at this very

moment what is it right now that

that brings you Joy when you think about

your life think about the week that's

passed or the week that's coming what is

it that brings you

Joy but at the same time what is

troubling

you what is troubling you what is it

that you're unsure

of you just have real questions about

something what is that right

now let us bring all of this all of this

to mind as we read this psalm

and listen to the word of God

listen because we believe that God

speaks through his word he speaks

through the words of scripture he speaks

Through the Bible he speaks through his

truth it is

powerful and so he speaks so let us tune

our hearts to listen to that let me pray

for us and and then we'll read Psalm 90

together holy God we thank you that we

can even gather today we're grateful for

that

that we can come together to worship you

to hear uh from the

scriptures and as we reflect honestly

about our own lives we realize that I

mean if we got to ask and share that

some of us come tonight with joyful

Hearts but at the same time some of us

are really just full of sorrow or we're

we're you know we might feel at peace

While others are just weary just tired

some are are sick getting over

sickness some of us feel safe we might

feel like things are okay and others may

be experiencing a real sense of dread or

just fear some of us have big questions

we just don't know what to do right now

in our lives and others are facing real

challenges and we're just not we're just

not sure what's going to

happen so in all of this however we feel

would you turn our hearts to you God

would you would you meet us in the midst

of these circumstances

and the reality is that we need you we

need to hear from you we need to

understand that and believe and trust

that you are God that you are good that

you love this beautiful and yet broken

world that you are working in and around

us and through us and in spite of us at

times please open our hearts and Minds

to this open our hearts and Minds to

your truth today speak to us help us

help us trust in you and we pray all of

this in your Holy Name Lord Jesus

amen I'm going to read Psalm 90 in its

entirety and uh in English and it's in

Thai as well the text is in Thai and

we'll refer back to this the slides will

be up throughout the sermon and so we

can refer back to it as well this is the

word of God Psalm

90 Lord you have been our Dwelling Place

in all

generations before the mountains were

brought forth orever you had formed form

Med the earth and the world from

Everlasting to Everlasting you are

God you were Return Man to dust and say

return oh children of

man for a thousand years in your sight

are but as yesterday when it is passed

or as a watch in the night you sweep

them away as with a

flood they are like a

dream like grass that is renewed in the

morning in the morning it flourishes and

is renewed in the evening it fades and

it

Withers for we are brought to an end by

your anger by your wrath we are

dismayed you have set our iniquities

before you our secret sins in the light

of your

presence for all our days pass away

under your

wrath we bring our years years to an

end like a

sigh the years of our life are 70 or

even by reason of strength

80 yet their span is but toil and

trouble they are soon gone and we fly

away who considers the power of your

anger and and your wrath according to

the fear of

you so teach us to number our days that

we may get a heart of

wisdom return oh Lord how

long have pity on your servants satisfy

us in the morning with your steadfast

love that we may

rejoice and be glad all our days make us

glad for as many days as you have

Afflicted us for as many years as we

have seen

evil let your work be shown to to your

servants and your glorious power to

their

children let the favor of the Lord Our

God be upon us and establish the work of

our hands upon us yes establish the work

of our hands this is the word of

God last week these flowers you might

have been thinking you oh wow those

don't look very nice when I brought them

up

here these flowers were given to our

family and I've had them near my desk

this week they've been a helpful visual

aid for me as I've been reflecting on

this very passage because you know just

a few days ago the purple blooms in this

bouquet were vibrant and fresh and

beautiful they looked nice the petals

were

full hydrated but now just a few days

later just a few days later they've w

withed here's what they looked like

earlier in the

week let's see I can

get let's see there we

go here's what they looked like earlier

in the week colorful vibrant beautiful

we might say right and just a few days

later they've withered now the white

blooms are holding holding up a bit

right but eventually this will turn to

dust right this will turn to

dust in fact on the floor in front of me

there were a

few uh pieces floating around before I

came up

here Psalm 90 focuses our

attention on the brevity of

Life the brevity of life life is brief

it's

brief and the brevity of Life elevates

the the precious nature of Our Lives the

precious nature of each day each day we

have is a

gift each moment passes by so quickly

and the Years also right time is passing

we are

fading and Psalm 90 reminds us of

this and if we if we read you know we're

reminded and it points our hearts to

consider and and to meditate on this

God's

eternality let's see there we

go humankind's

mortality and as we grapple with these

realities and the reality of our of life

itself in the midst of the Gospel it

offers us we find Hope in the midst of

Despair the psalm begins with

all right there we go the psalm begins

I'm going to get this I promise I'll

figure it out before the night is

through Moses is attributed as the the

author of this Psalm and it begins with

an immense and foundational look at

theological truths okay who is God what

has God

done and we read that God has done

amazing things God is Creator God has

created all things before the Earth was

formed before time and space and light

were spoken into existence before

everything that is was created out of

nothing God

was God

existed God was and is and will be God

is

eternal and Moses the writer is is

starting this prayer starting this song

with an acknowledgment of the nature of

who God is

he's laying that

out God is eternal God is

Creator God has given

life in the account of creation itself

in in Genesis in the first chapter we

read this so God created man in his own

image in the image of God he created him

male and female he created

them to be created in in the image of

God by God means that humans have been

given Great Value enormous value and

dignity and worth before

God humans are precious precious every

life precious in the eyes of the Creator

in the eyes of God the passage in

Genesis continues with with God

extending his blessing upon his creation

giving immense bless ing

to his his creation of humans and and

instructing them to giving this loving

command to cultivate and to Steward and

to use what God has

created Moses is reconnecting with God's

exist good intent for

creation that mankind would exist in

Perfect Harmony that there would be uh

this beautiful relationship between God

and His creation between Mankind and God

and then mankind with one

another you know the Bible talks about

this

image it uses the word shalom shalom and

Shalom is really speaking to this idea

of Peace a full and Lasting full peace

blessing flourishing

Shalom from Everlasting

to

Everlasting you are God Moses

writes you have been our Dwelling

Place other translations render that

word dwelling as Refuge

Refuge God you are our place of

safety you are our place of

Peace you are our place of Life a

flourishing life Shalom forever you have

been our

dwelling that Moses begins this Psalm by

recounting this perfect

world and the relationship of mankind

with

God it serves just to magnify the stark

contrast to what comes

next humankind's

mortality in verse three we read

that sadly the Book of

Genesis not only recounts creation which

is good and perfect and

beautiful but it recounts also the

fall of

mankind and in modern times we see the

harsh reality of this play out we see it

in the world right around us we see it

even in our own hearts

Wars and

strife hatred and

violence pain and sorrow sickness and

death for When sin entered the world it

brought with it sickness and death and

Decay so we read on the next few verses

deal with the harsh reality of our

sinful

actions death is a reality because of

our own

sin the Bible teaches that sin is an

affront towards a holy

God and God's judgmental wrath his anger

his wrath against sin is just it's

fair sin and evil are truly awful truly

awful and a holy God will justly deal

with sin he

will in Romans we read of that in six

verse uh chapter 6 verse 23 we read of

that it says the wages of

sin what sin leads to is

death it's death and the second half of

that verse is where we find the beauty

of the Gospel but in the midst of that

in the midst of that death the free gift

of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus

our lord Psalm 90 paints it paints a

bleak picture doesn't it

paints a bleak picture of our

existence all our days pass away under

your

wrath we may live 70 or 80

years the text says but all of these are

marked by toil and

trouble there's not much hope in that is

there but this the this is the reality

of our existence the reality problem of

Our Lives the problem the problem of

death the real problem the brevity of

Life Is But one aspect of our lives

right that our lives just fly by but the

the overarching the real

enemy is death it's

death you know every time period every

culture every people throughout our

history recorded history they've had to

wrestle with this reality

they've had to wrestle with this

impending reality for all of us we will

all perish we will all

perish it's no wonder that Moses writes

of a great and final

sigh this 80 years and then right like

really 70 or 80 years and then just

this you

know a life a life that is void of

meaning a life that ends in death can

only offer one final sigh of

Despair and it's in the midst of this

extreme

despair that the gospel which is

rendered as good

news this is where the gospel offers

hope this is where the gospel offers

hope Moses as he's writing

pins

this who

considers who considers the power of

your anger verse

11 who considers the power of your anger

and your

wrath according to the fear of

you how can the sinful one find

reconciliation with God

how does the sinful one find pardon if

the wages of sin and we are sinners is

death how can the Eternal God bestow

eternal life a new in the face of

death these are the questions that that

are coming out of this

text how can we know or experience the

fullness of God's just

wrath and yet not have have it fully

consume

us how can we as Sinners escape death

that's the

question and the answer is that we we

can't we don't we

can't and so where is the Hope in that

where is the Hope in the midst of that

that's the the question that the gospel

comes around and comes to how can it be

good news if that's if that's where we

are where's the good news to be found

and this is

how because of of Jesus Jesus brings

hope into a heart that is full of

Despair

how so it's his sacrificial death Jesus

his sacrificial death actually

consumes the wrath of God the wrath of

God towards us over our

sin now the found

foundational uh base of of Christian

doctrine and faith is that repentant

sinners like when we come to God and we

say I I understand that I am a sinner I

believe that and so I confess and I

repent and I turn and I look to

you that repentant Sinners

receive God's mercy not God's Wrath

mercy because of what Jesus did see

Jesus he's the one that took on the

wrath of God the full power of God's

righteous anger and judgment over sin

the wrath of God was poured out on

Jesus on the cross

Jesus he

died the wrath of God

consumed Jesus and he died he died the

death that we deserve as sinners Jesus

who was without sin took on our

sin and he consumed the wrath of God

that was that was to be Meed out towards

us Jesus is the only one that

knows the power of God's

anger Moses's questioned who who can

know who does know who

considers the power of your anger Jesus

Jesus knows he's the only one that knows

and receives on the cross the power of

God's anger and not have

it destroy him caused his

death he took that on he

died and yet that is not where it

ends that is not where it

ends so Christians have a sure hope

where is their hope and despair

Christians have a sure hope in the face

of our impending physical

death because we look to and believe in

the one that conquered death

itself for the foundational claim of

Christianity is that 3 days after his

crucifixion after

Jesus died he

rose from the

dead he rose from the dead he he rose to

New Life he conquered death itself death

had no final power over Jesus is that it

will and the hope of the gospel for

those that look to Jesus is that it will

have no final power over us all those

who take refuge in him all those who

look to Jesus as our

dwelling the Apostle Paul writes about

extensively he writes about the the

resurrection of Jesus and its

implications for

Humanity in 1 Corinthians chapter

15 really digs into this you can read

the whole

chapter and it it's a really amazing

passage how it's written kind of back

and forth ideas so read it when you have

time even perhaps this

evening but I just want to call our

attention to a few verses in chapter

15 Paul writes

this if in Christ we have hope in this

life

only we are of all people most to be

pied but in fact Christ has been raised

from the dead the first fruits of those

who have fallen asleep for as by Man

Came

Death by a man has come also the

resurrection of the Dead for as in Adam

all die so also in Christ shall all be

made

alive Paul is underscoring that the only

hope we have in the face of death is to

look to the resurrection of Jesus Christ

to look to

Jesus if Jes if Jesus didn't rise from

the dead Paul is writing he says the

only the only hope we have is in this

life then we are to be pied why why

Christians to be pied because we're

placing Our Hope in a savior that's dead

our hope is

futile but Paul writes that Jesus has

been raised from the dead Jesus is alive

he's

alive and he's reigning over all he's

alive and all those that seek refuge in

him all those that rest in him as the

dwelling place the the Eternal dwelling

of God all those will share in this hope

of

Resurrection will share in that hope

so also in Christ shall all be made

alive Paul writes we be made Alive With

Jesus again one

day Paul concludes the psalm with a plea

unto

God a prayer that God

would would help us to be made aware of

our

fraility the brevity of Our Lives

when he says teach us to

number you know to to number something

is to call attention to it it's to

market

right this kind of attention it it calls

us to really consider what we are living

for what are we living for what are we

giving our time and our attention to

what really

matters what is of utmost

importance the answer to these questions

will be found in and through and by the

wisdom of

God teach us to number our days I

remember someone saying one time you

know when someone's on their

deathbed they're

dying they don't say something like I

wish I I I had spent more time at the

office you just don't hear that you

don't hear

that you know what is it that as We Know

number our days what does it sharpen our

attention to about today and

tomorrow what are we living for what are

we living

for what are we connected to teach us to

number our days that we may get a heart

wisdom help us God right this can be our

prayer help us to know how to live

before

you help us to know how to love and to

care for those around

us help us also to see the Glorious work

you have done help us to see what you

are doing around us right like wake us

up wake us

up and even as as we read further

there's a beautiful generational

blessing of teaching these truths right

that the children would see your

glorious

power help us to even grasp it and to be

teaching it to our children in community

in our

children Moses asks for God's

favor he says God would you extend favor

upon us he asked for the blessing of God

to come and to

help that can be our prayer God help us

steer our hearts bless the work and the

life that you've given us help us lead

us guide us so that we and help us to

follow you as you are faithful to do

that and may God you know redeem the

toil and the trouble and the hardship of

70 or 80

years and work all things together for

his good for his glory in our

lives some translations actually render

that word favor as

Beauty as

Beauty and may that be our prayer as

well may we be captivated by the beauty

God beauty of who God is what God has

done God's beautiful plan the

sacrificial death of Jesus for

us for this broken world to bring

healing and

restoration and out of the working of

all of this to bring it into our

lives we would do well to meditate on

the beauty

of Jesus Christ his sacrificial death

for

us CS Lewis wrote this concerning death

itself on the one hand death is the

Triumph of

Satan the punishment of the

fall and The Last

Enemy Christ shed tears at the grave of

Lazarus

and sweated blood in

Gethsemane the life of lives that was in

him detested this penal obscenity not

less than we do but

more on the other hand only he who loses

his life will save

it we are baptized into the death of

Christ and it is the remedy for the

fall death is in fact what some Modern

and also God's Great weapon it is

Satan's great

weapon and also God's Great

weapon it is Holy and Unholy it is our

Supreme

disgrace and our only

hope and the means by which he and the

means by which he

conquered and the means by which he

conquered Jesus giving of himself and

death so that we may have life and life

eternal

God from Everlasting to

Everlasting I bought this uh ceramic

vessel from an artist Trevor Foster he's

actually based in

changmai and he titled this body of work

that he made Moto Mori mimo Mori

and MTO Mori is

Latin

meaning being translated

remember that you

die remember that you die it's it it it

has its roots in uh the philosophers but

also you of of classical Antiquity but

also within the Christian Faith remember

that you

die and the idea um being found even

outside of the church is that in

Remembering your impending death the

idea goes we're help to live a life more

full

right to really live you've probably

heard someone say something along along

lines of you you're never really living

until you know you're going to die

right but the

Christian the Christian

goes beyond

this we go Way Beyond

this because yes we know that we are

going to

die but we look well beyond this to the

one who

died Jesus Christ but the one not only

that died but that conquered death the

one that conquered death so yeah if I

choose to have my morning coffee out of

this you know it helps you remember like

wow this is a day in my

life Moto

Mori but what Psalm 90 focuses our

hearts on is that yes we will

die but we will live we will

live as we place our hope and our trust

in our faith and we find our Eternal

dwelling and the one that will never

die let's pray

God our our prayer today is that that

you would help us sense this

remember the fraility of our own

lives we may not need to call recall to

mind things that are troubling us they

might be constantly on our

hearts we may not need to be reminded of

death um a number of us have lost loved

ones in the years past this year

recently our hearts are still raw with

the reality of the brevity of

life and they will

be so in the midst of this as as Psalm

90 focuses this Spotlight on this

reality for

us would you help us gaze upon the

beauty of your eternal love for this

broken

World As We Sayang earlier tonight Jesus

calls us to look to

him Lord Jesus would you would you sing

that song strongly in our hearts that we

would look to

you help us Look to You

Jesus

crucified risen from the dead eternally

reigning over

all help us look not to the fading

things not the fading

flowers not the fading things around us

but to you

the Eternal God of

Justice of

mercy and of

Grace help us find our rest and our

refuge in you alone oh

Lord we pray all of this in your Holy

Name Lord Jesus amen

","":
Grace
