our our text today is 1 Timothy 3:

14-

16 and this is God's

word I hope to come to you soon but I am

writing these things to you so that if I

delay you may know how one ought to

behave in the household of God which is

the Church of the Living God a pillar

and buttress of the truth great indeed

we confess is the mystery of godliness

he was manifested in the flesh

Vindicated by the spirit seen by Angels

proclaimed among the

Nations believed in believed on in the

world and taken up in

glory a racetrack Playa is a dry lake

bed L located in Death Valley National

Park in the state of California in the

US and the lake bed is dry for most of

the year and has a a desert-like

Terrain and there are several rocks that

just litter this dry lake bed and they

are called sailing

stones and the reason they are called

sailing Stones is because they move and

leave a visible trail behind them and so

they look like a boat may be sailing in

the water and some of these rocks can

weigh up to

320 kg so these are some of these rocks

are are very large

and investigators studied the phenomenon

of how they move for hundreds of years

and they were not able to explain the

cause no one ever saw the rocks move

they just saw the the trail that they

left

behind and sometimes the Rocks would sit

for a decade without moving and so

scientists were were baffled at what

type of force could be moving these

large

stones and in 2014

scientists were able to set up a large

uh time-lapse camera that was able to

solve the

mystery they discovered that for the

rocks to move the conditions of the pla

must be just

right the pl must have enough rain for

it to fill with water then the night

temperatures they must be cold enough

for the water to freeze into sheets of

thin ice and on sunny days when when the

ice melts it can Prov provide a

condition for these large rocks to move

across this dry lake

bed and when strong winds blow across

the pla the Rocks then begin to move and

leave a trail behind

them this discovery solved the mystery

that had been in an unexplainable

phenomenon for so long and as we look at

our text today we will see the mystery

of our godliness

revealed and and so let's look at our

text for this

afternoon the first thing I want to look

at in our text this afternoon is that we

are members of God's

household in verses 14 through 15 we

read I hope to come to you soon but I am

behave in the household of

God Paul communicates several things to

us by using the phrase household of God

it may be difficult for some of us here

especially those with a western

background to understand this this

concept of household a household in

Paul's day uh consisted of everyone in

the household and so it consisted of

family members it consisted of those who

weren't in the household uh servants and

slaves and a household would have a head

of the household who would have author

over everyone in the household and this

person would manage

it and all of the household centered

their lives around the head of the

household and would look for direction

and Leadership from this

person and it is the way households

function

then and what does being a part of God's

household mean for our relationship with

God God describes our relationship

relationship to him in script scripture

in several

ways he describes us as God's as his

children who he

loves we are also described as the

Beloved bride of

Christ and in a couple of places in

scripture Paul describes God's people as

servants or slaves of

Christ and all of these illustrations

they communicate to us that God is so

when Paul says household of God he is

communicating to us us that God is the

head of his household and as the head of

his household he has authority over how

it's supposed to

run when we look at the the places in

Scripture that I just mentioned each of

these illustrations of our relationship

with God we know from these texts that

that God doesn't rule as an evil or mean

or selfish

dictator that is not his

character he rules as as a loving kind

gracious and good father King and

husband but what we must understand like

any good head of a household he has

certain expectations and certain rules

for how we are to live especially in his

church and so he expects us to obey

these rules for our good and for his

glory there is a a phrase that a lot of

parents in the States use

with their children when they are

communicating with them about their

expectations for how they are to live in

their

household and I suspect there is

probably a similar phrase in Thailand

that most of you have heard from your

parents it goes if you live under my

roofle then what you will live by my

rules this is what Paul is telling us

here if you are going to live as a

member of God's house household you must

know his rules and live by them and so

if we want to be good members of God's

household then one of the principles

that our hearts need to learn is that we

need to learn to submit to God's

Authority and his

rules and being part of God's household

it not only has implications for our

relationship with God but it also has

implications for our relationship with

each other

other being part of God's household

means that as members of the household

We are

family we are Brothers and Sisters in

Christ and we should look at each other

and treat each other as

family Paul gives us specific

instructions on how to do that

throughout 1 Timothy but especially in

chapters 4 or especially in chapters 5

and

6 and in 1 Timothy 5: 1-2 we read of how

we are to speak to one

another do not rebuke an older man but

encourage him as you would a father

younger men as brothers older women as

mothers younger women as sisters in all

Purity and there is no doubt that we

will have controversy and we will have

confrontation at Grace City we still sin

so we will need to rebuke each other

other we will need to encourage each

other in The Faith from time to time and

we need to be willing and ready to be

corrected by each other if we were not

living the way that God has

commanded and we need to be willing and

ready to work through things whenever we

disagree with each

other but we need to take great care in

how we go about doing this our

interactions with with one another they

should not look like a late night bar

fight at a bar on so soy Cowboy we need

to speak to one another out of love and

with gentleness like family living in

the house of God speak to one

another the next time we feel convicted

to talk to someone about a particular

sin we are concerned about in his or her

life or have a disagreement with someone

we first need to think of this person as

a family

member if they are older than us then we

should talk to this person with a

certain amount of

respect that is given to older people if

we were the same age we should talk to

him or her as we would a close brother

or sister that we

love and most of the time parents will

put older siblings in charge of younger

siblings with the hopes and expectations

that the older sibling will take care of

the younger and set a good an example

for the

younger and why is this because most of

the time the older sibling is more

mature and will take on responsibility

to like look after the younger

child in most cases the older sibling

turns out to be that type A personality

that goes throughout life as a a high

achiever because they just keep taking

on that role as they go throughout life

and I say most of the time because this

is not always the case and it wasn't the

case in my family whenever I was was a

child around 2 or three my older brother

convinced me to crawl into my parents

clothes

dryer and I foolishly trusted him and

did so and to my wh he closed the door

and turned the dryer

on and thankfully my mother was close by

and heard the thud of the dryer in my

screams and came running in and turned

the dryer off before I got too

crispy and when I asked asked my brother

if I could tell you all this story he

said I quote yes please do and tell them

that I would do it again if I got the

chance and my family usually had a dog

when I was was growing up and I can't

remember when this happened but but

sometime after the dryer event my

brother again uh this doesn't speak to

my intelligence but again he convinced

me to try to eat a bag of dog food for

$5 and I ate about five pieces before

becoming

sick and when we we were teenagers my my

brother and I we we would go and and

help take care of my uh grandfather's

yard with him and one of our cousins

would always join us and we would pick

up Limbs and they' Fallen to the ground

and we would put them in the back of his

pickup truck and we would haul them to

the Gully behind his house and my

grandfather was older at the time and so

he would work with us until noon and

then uh he would cut off and then the

rest of the work it was our

responsibility and I always dreaded the

afternoons because my cousin and brother

would go play while I did most of the

work my grandfather lived on a farm that

had a lot of pasture

land people would would pay him to to

come and cut his grass and then uh these

people would bail the grass into to

large round h hay bells and they would

then put these hay bells on on a truck

and they would take them to a market

where they would sell them to Farmers uh

who would buy them to feed their cows

and the Gully where we would drop off

these limbs was at the bottom of a steep

incline of my grandfather's

pastor and one day I'm driving the truck

back uh by myself uh from having uh

hauled all these Limbs and dropped them

off and I look out the passenger side

window

and I see my brother on one of these hay

bells and I see my cousin behind it and

he is pushing the hay Bell down the

hill and the hay Bell is on a decline

and so it starts gaining speed as he is

on top of it and it begins to roll

quickly and as my brother is riding this

hay Bell down the hill he quickly jumps

off before it starts going super fast

and he gets sucked under it and it rolls

over him and it's uh my cousin and

brother thought that eventually that it

would stop but it doesn't it just keeps

gaining speed as it goes down the hill

and it goes flying down the hill into

the Gully where we throw all these Limbs

and it burst uh into pieces and my

brother and cousin they never told my

grandfather what happened that day but

he did find out later when the man who

had bailed the hay came and saw his hay

Bell destroyed my grandfather ended up

losing money and and face that day

because he couldn't explain how a 1,000

lb hay Bell ended up destroyed in his

golly and if you are wondering my

parents wisely never looked to my

brother to take on that older sibling

role for me

thankfully and we didn't look at verses

1-13 in 1 Timothy chapter 3 because we

don't have that much time but but Paul

is talking about qualifications for

officers in the

church and I think all but one of the

qualifications that overseers be able to

teach are qualifications of

character why does Paul spend so much

time on this list of character

qualifications because God wants to make

sure that the older brother is not going

to put the younger siblings in a dryer

and turn it on or try to get them to eat

dog food for $5 or set a bad example for

those in his

household as we will look at in a few

minutes it is important for those in

leadership to set an example for the

household of

God God wants to make sure that his

household is well taken care of and so

you see God's care for us whenever you

look at this long list of qualities an

officer in the church must have the qual

qualified to be an

officer and the Elders of Grace City are

aan Nati and aan Tim and they were the

overseers of the church and they worked

with the the church staff and they

worked with the small group leaders to

provide spiritual care and direction for

the

church and the church staff and Elders

of the church uh we met together a few

weeks ago for our yearly planning

meeting and one of the topics we

discussed was how do we do a better job

of

shepherding and we prayed and we planned

how to do better this coming

year and I want you to I want to

encourage you to to pray for the Elders

of the church pray for the staff pray

for the small group leaders who serve

the church in these different

roles ask the Lord to give them the

grace to fulfill these roles and

responsibilities that the Lord has

called them to so that the household of

God fun ings well and is well taken care

of which is what the Lord

desires and we are all members of God's

household with equal worth and equal

status but we each have a different role

in the

house and we've looked at what it means

to be a member of God's

household God is our Authority We are

family and he has put older brothers in

charge to take care of us and let let's

look now at what it means to live as

members of the household of

God Paul mentions that the term

godliness are Godly several times in

first

Timothy in our text he

says

oh great indeed we confess is the

mystery of

godliness so what does Paul mean when he

uses godliness in our text

we can get a better understanding of how

Paul uses this term if we look at 1

Timothy 4:

6-16 so let's take a look at that and

see what it has to teach us about

godliness if you put these things before

the brothers you will be a good servant

of Christ Jesus being trained in the

words of the faith and of the good

doctrine that you have followed have

nothing to do with ir reverent silly M

rather train yourself for godliness for

while bodily training is of some value

godliness is of value in every way as it

holds promise for the present life and

also for the life to come the saying is

trustworthy and deserving of full

acceptance for to this end we toil and

strive because we have our hope set on

the Living

God who is a savior of all people

especially of those who

believe command and teach these things

let no one despise you for your youth

but set believers an example in speech

in conduct in love in faith in Purity

until I come devote yourself to the

public reading of scripture to

exhortation to teaching do not neglect

the gift you have which was given you by

prophecy when the Council of Elders laid

their hands on

you PR practice these things immerse

yourself in them so that all may see

your progress keep a close watch on

yourself and on the teaching persist in

this for by so doing you will save both

yourself and your

hears and so Paul commands for The Godly

life that that he has called us uh to

live

oh

sorry um and in verse six he says being

trained in the words of the faith and of

the good doctrine that you have followed

and so Timothy knows the gospel and the

truth of God's

word and he has put it into practice by

following it and living it out and

Timothy knows the truth and the truth of

God's word and in verse S Paul

encourages Timothy to continue on in

godliness he says have nothing to do

with irreverent silly Miz rather train

yourself for

godliness so how does Paul tell Timothy

to train himself for

godliness the word train here it carries

the the idea of an athlete training for

some

event Paul is speaking to to Timothy as

a coach would speak to a young athlete

for an event

Paul tells Timothy to avoid the junk

food of donuts and 7-Eleven cheese

sandwiches in Fanta and instead go for

the vegetables and the milk and the

pasta and the

fish he is saying avoid the silly myth

of these false

teachers and continue to consume the

word of God that you have been fed and

benefited from and if you do this then

you will train yourself for godliness

and so the basis of godliness is God's

word and this is why Paul says in 1

Timothy 3:15 that the church is a pillar

and butress of the

truth he uses architectural imagery of a

pillar and butus to help us understand

the important function of the church to

support and protect God's

word and a butus is a support that gives

a a structure added strength and a

pillar would hold up the roof of a

structure and so both a buttress and a

pillar would provide for a sturdy

structure and if the pillars collapse or

the the buttress is weak then the whole

building will

collapse they are crucial part of the

structure of the

building and the church will cease to be

the church without God's

word God has given us his word and we

are to be good stewards of it by

supporting it and keeping it

intact so God's word is foundational to

Godliness it is the basis for

godliness it is the source of the stream

from which our godliness

flows so we see that godliness is

connected to God's word but what exactly

is it and what does it look like Paul

makes this clear in first Timothy

4:12 let no one despise you for your

youth but set the Believers an example

in speech in conduct in love in faith

impurity the example that Timothy is to

set before the church is a life of

godliness Paul is describing what

godliness looks

like godliness is living a life that is

shaped by God's

word it is living a genuine Christian

Life where every area of Our Lives is

truth when my family and I go to the

beach we will usually pick up one of

those cheap plastic sandbucket sets that

you can find at any of the stores uh at

the beach and it comes with with a

shovel and and a bucket and some type of

mold for a sea

creature you can fill the mold with sand

and then you can put it on the top of

the beach and when you remove it

whenever you remove the mold it will

look like whatever uh sea creature it is

and so if it is a crab you fill it up

with sand and then you plop it down on

the beach and you remove the mold and

you have a mold or an image of a crab if

it's a fish and you put sand in it and

then you put it on the top of the beach

and you remove it the image is a

fish and for the Christian God's word is

the mold that should shape all of our

life

the question we need to constantly be

asking ourselves is does my life look

like the Christian Life

should we want to pursue

godliness and as we saw in chapter 4 we

are to to train ourselves for godliness

this means putting forth effort of

learning God's word so that we can then

live by

it Paul saw the need of the church um in

Ephesus to know the importance of Godly

living and it is the focus of his letter

he says in 1

Timothy 3:

14-15 I hope to come to you soon but I

am writing these things to you so that

if I delay you may know how one ought to

God and so for Paul there was no time to

delay it's usually best to to talk to

someone important um to talk to someone

in person about something of importance

but what H Paul had to tell the church

at Ephesus about godliness and how to

conduct oneself as a member of God's

household it was too important to wait

uh for Paul to go to them in

person and I want to look at why

godliness is so important and what

should motivate us to pursue godliness

in just a minute but before I do I want

to mention something about what

godliness is not

we've already looked at and defined how

Paul uses the term of godliness but I

want to make a

clarification godliness is not

sinlessness in first John we are told

that it is impossible for us to be

sinless during our lifetime in this

world and it is true that Paul has set

out a lot of moral standards in first

Timothy for the way that we should live

and conduct ourselves in the house of

God and our lives should conform to

these to some

degree when our lives do it is evidence

of the New Life of Christ that God has

given us and so we want to see that new

life and godliness in the sense that we

live our lives to conform to these moral

standards and this is actually part of

the Gospel is part of the good news that

Christ has broken the stronghold that

Sin Sin once had on us and he has given

us the ability to live a new life of

obedience and so part of what godliness

looks like is living in love toward God

and living in love towards

others what does godliness look like

when our lives are nowhere near God's

moral

standards what does godliness look like

when we don't speak to one another in

kindness in

love what does it look like when our

conversation uh with someone looks like

a bar fight at uh at a bar on soy

Cowboy God's word tells us that

godliness in the face of sin includes

confession we come before the Lord like

we do every Sunday during the worship

service and we confess to the Lord that

what we have done is sin and we

recognize that this is rebellion against

him and godliness doesn't stop

there when we confess we go on to repent

of our sin we see it for the evil it is

and we turn away from it and so instead

of running down the path towards sin we

turn around and we run in the opposite

direction we set our hearts and our

minds in a New

Direction and it also means having a

faith in Christ and making much of him

for conquering our

sin we rely on what he has done for for

us at the cross that has made it

possible for God to forgive us of our

sin and we rest in God's grace and love

for us and what he has done for us in

Jesus after God created the world and

and all other things scripture tells us

that he

rested the task that he had set out to

do for the the purpose of the initial

creation of everything everything that

he wanted to do and make was

complete he had finished his work and he

ceased from

working God didn't say I need to change

this or I need to to add that things

were created the way that God had

planned and nothing else was needed so

God sat back and he admired his great

work the work that Christ did at the

cross for God to be able to forgive us

of our sin it is complete

we can't do anything to add to it we

just need to rest in it and sit back and

admire

it so Godly is godliness is not

sinlessness godliness is a life that is

conformed to God's word and God's word

instructs us how to be Godly when we

sin we want to know God's word and the

gospel well in order to train ourselves

for

godliness so what Paul is telling us in

first Timothy is that God has given us a

mold and that we need to take the sand

of our life and pack it into that mold

and we want our life to take the shape

and be molded by God's

word now that we've looked at godliness

in the face of our sin let's look next

at the importance of godliness and what

our motivation for pursuing godliness

should

be so what should be our motivation for

godliness

our motivation for godliness should be

to honor the Lord and the salvation of

ourselves and

others our motivation should first and

foremost be to honor the Lord as we saw

earlier we are members of God's

household and as God's children his

bride and his servants we want to honor

the Lord by living in a way that is

pleasing to him that he has instructed

us to live in he is our loving father or

husband and master who provides for us

in so many ways and our response is to

his love should be to honor him by

submitting to his

word another Mo motivation for p

pursuing godliness is to be a light to

nations in 1 Timothy 2 1-4 we read first

of all then I urge that supplications

prayers intercessions and thanksgivings

be made for all people for kings and all

who are in high positions that we may

lead a peaceful and quiet life Godly and

dignified in every way this is good and

it is pleasing in the sight of our of

God our savior who desires all people to

be saved and to come to the knowledge of

the truth and so when our lives to

conform to God's word it is a light to

world it is like turning the the sand

mold over and putting it on the top of

beach and when you remove it it looks

like a cross for all those who walk

along the beach to

see when people see us live by God's

moral standards that God has set out for

us to live by from new desires and they

see our new lifestyle they see the cross

they see

Jesus when people see our sin and they

see the hope that we have in the face of

our sin they see the power of Christ to

forgive

sin this is why scripture tells us to be

ready to share the reason for the hope

that is within us we want our lives to

be alike to those around us and for them

to see the greatness of Christ in

us and our motivation for living a Godly

life is not only to be a light to the

Nations but also a light to one another

in 1 uh Timothy 4:1 12-16 we read let no

one despise you for your youth but set

the Believers an example in speech in

conduct in love in faith in Purity until

I come devote yourself to the public

reading of scripture to exhortation to

teaching do not neglect the gift you

have which is given you by prophecy when

the Council of Elders laid their hands

on you

practice these things immerse yourself

in them so that all may see your

progress keep a close watch on yourself

and on the teaching persist in this for

by doing so you will sa both yourself

and your

hears and so Paul is telling Timothy to

keep a close watch on his conduct and

the way he is handling God's word he's

basically saying focus on godliness

the reason Paul tells him this is for

the Salvation of those brothers and

sisters that he is ministering to and

for his own

salvation I once heard someone talk

about another person as having a strong

Ministry of

presence and I I didn't understand what

this person was talking about at the

time and I thought this was just a term

that this had person had come up with to

give quiet people uh who talk don't talk

very

much um after studying first Timothy I

understand what this person meant and

the significance of a Ministry of

presence God uses the way we live our

lives and our faith in the gospel to

bless others in the

faith when people God when people know

God's truth and they live out the gospel

they set an example for other people

around them to

see when Believers see other believers

living a Godly life it strengthens their

faith and this is the reason we need to

be around each other this is why Grace

City offers so many small

groups it is important for us to have

fellowship with other

believers and this is why attending

church in per person on Sundays is so

important we can listen to a sermon on

Sundays uh from home which is

great and sometimes necessary but but we

should be cautious to make this the norm

or habit for our

lives in the reason is that we will miss

out on the presence of other

believers we spiritually need to be in

the presence of one another for our own

spiritual health and to provide a

Ministry of presence for the other

members of the

household God strengthens us through one

another and he keeps us in the faith as

we see Christ in the gospel in each

other let's look lastly at the key to

our

godliness we find the key to our

godliness in 1 Timothy

3:16 great indeed we confess is the

godliness he was manifested in the flesh

proclaimed among the Nations believed on

in the world and taken up in

glory Paul uses the the term mystery to

refer to something that was uh something

that was not very clear that now has

become clear and in the Old Testament

God promised to give his people the

ability to know and to live according to

his word in a way that they had never

experienced

before god mentioned things in in his

word and uh that pointed to Jesus that

would bring about the change but it

wasn't as clear as when Jesus came to

the Earth and shared about who he was

and what he came to do for God's

people then the apostles like Paul uh

that wrote first Timothy explain this

even further so that what was once a

mystery is now clear to

us and so the mystery that Paul is

referring to here is

Christ he uses a hymn or a Creed that

was known at the time of writing to give

us an accurate description of

Jesus Paul is making a connection

between godliness and

Christ and so it is because of Jesus

that we are able to live a Godly

life in Galatians 2:20 we read I have

been crucified with Christ and the life

I now live in the flesh I live by the

faith in the Son of God who loved me and

gave himself for me

and so Christ is the one who is

empowering us to live a life of

godliness that God calls us to he is the

one who is transforming in our hearts

and our minds so that we can do his will

and therefore as we pursue godliness it

must be done by God dependent

effort so let us look to him for the

strength and the ability to live The

Godly life that he calls us to let's

pray and ask him to to do that for

us dear Lord we thank you so much for

calling us to

yourself we thank you for making us part

of your

household we thank you that we are your

children we are your bride we are your

servants you are our loving

father our gracious husband and master

and so I pray that you will help us to

see you as being our Authority I pray

that you will help us to see you as

wanting the best for us for taking care

of us in the way that you have by

placing people in Authority in the

church above us to Shepherd us to care

us we thank you for your love for

us you have called us to be Godly in

your church you have called us uh

to look at your word to know your

word to cherish your word that is how

you feed us to Lord and that is how you

grow us and so I pray that you will

continue to to teach us teach us your

word out what godliness looks like I

pray that you will continue to teach us

your

word we know that we can't live a Godly

life on our own and we know that the

power comes

from Christ Living in us and so I pray

that as we pursue a Godly life in the

church I pray that you will help us to

be dependent upon you to give us the

ability to do

that we thank you that we that you do

not call us to live a perfect life we

cannot do that uh dear Lord Christ has

done that for

us I pray that you will help us to

understand godliness rightly and I ask

all this in Jesus name amen

","":
Grace
