as we' mentioned before um in

previous weeks when we' talked about

first Timothy it's a letter uh that Paul

wrote to his Apprentice Timothy um who's

serving uh p as a pastor in a church in

EP Ephesus uh Paul wrote lots of letters

throughout the old test the New

Testament uh to churches giving advice

encouragement instruction um reminding

them of of the truths of the of the

Gospel of Jesus Christ

um he takes special care to write two

different letters to Timothy so Timothy

was kind of like Paul's Paul's guy uh in

the book of Acts when uh when Paul first

meets Timothy he immediately sees

promise in him he wants Timothy to start

accompanying uh Paul as he's going on

his missionary Journeys so that he can

learn from Paul um Paul sees Timothy as

like the person who could possibly

replace him down the road

um he believes Timothy's uniquely

qualified to be a pastor even though

he's very very

young uh so Timothy starts his journey

as a pastor of a church and Paul writes

these letters to him to kind of

encourage him um some giv him give him

some advice uh from One Pastor to

another from one missionary to another

um and most of this letter has been Paul

giving Specific Instructions to Timothy

uh for church structure for church

governance um for how the hierarchy

within the church leadership should have

work where women stand in that hierarchy

um and to be honest with you I I really

don't envy some of my fellow preachers

who have had to preach on some of the

topics that are written in this book um

thankfully 1 Timothy 5 is is a little

bit more uh to the point there are some

uh parts of it that are a little more

complicated a little more complex uh

there are some structural things that

we're going to talk about but the main

point of 1 Timothy 5 is that um we all

as a church treat treat each other with

love and respect um and so that's what

we're going to base this me Mage John um

and it kind of goes back to um verse 15

of chapter 3 um Paul writes uh in in in

verse 15 of chapter 3 if I delay you may

know how one ought to behave in the

household of God which is the Church of

the Living God a pillar and buttress of

Truth so in our chapter today you're

going to see again that what Paul is

focused on more than anything else is

talking to Timothy about how the members

of the church should behave when they

relate to one another um how they should

treat one another how they should rebuke

one another um how they should care for

the least of these among them those who

are in need um and how they should

defend one another and ultimately how

they should uh discipline one another

with failure um so turn with me to 1

Timothy 5 uh and we will begin in verse

one uh do not rebuke an older man but

encourage him as you would a father

younger men as brothers older women as

mothers younger women as sisters in all

Purity honor widows who are truly widows

but but if a widow has children or

grandchildren let them first learn to

show godliness to their own household to

make some return to their parents for

this is pleasing in the sight of God she

who is truly a widow left all alone has

set her hope on God and continues in

supplications and prayers night and day

but she who is self-indulgent is dead

even while she

lives command these things as well so

that they may may may be without

reproach but if anyone does not provide

for his relatives and especially for

members of his household he has denied

the faith and is worse than an

unbeliever let a widow who let a widow

be enrolled if she is not less than 60

years of age having been the wife of one

husband and having a reputation for good

works if she has brought up children has

shown Hospitality has washed the feet of

the Saints has cared for The Afflicted

and has devoted herself to every good

work but refused

to uh enroll younger widows for when

their passions draw them away from

Christ they desire to marry and so incur

condemnation for having abandoned their

former Faith besides that they learn to

be idlers going about from house to

house and not only

idlers not only erss but also gossips

and Busy Bodies saying what they should

not so I would have younger widows marry

be children manage their households and

give the adversary no occasion for

slander for some have already strayed

after Satan

if any believing woman has relatives who

are widows let her care for them let the

church not be burdened so that it may be

it it may care for those who are truly

widows let the elders who rule well be

considered worthy of double honor

especially those who labor in preaching

and teaching for the scripture says you

shall not muzzle an ox when it Treads

out grain and the laborer deserves his

wages do not admit a charge against an

elder except on the evidence of two or

three witnesses as for those who persist

in and rebuke them in the presence of

all so that the rest May stand in fear

in the presence of God and of Christ

Jesus and of the elect angels I charge

you to keep these rules without pre uh

prejudging doing nothing from partiality

do not be Hasty in the laying on of

hands nor take part in the sins of

others keep yourself pure no longer

drink only water but use a little wine

for the sake of your stomach and your

frequent ailments the sins of some

people are conspicuous going before them

to judgment but the sins of others

appear later so also good works are

conspicuous and even those that are not

cannot remain

hidden let's pray Lord we pray that you

will fill this place with your spirit

this afternoon we pray that you will

give me the words that you have for me

to share from this text Lord I pray that

we will see within this text the ways

that we can love one another well I pray

that the Lost around us would see the

ways that we love and care for one

another and wonder what is different

about us we love you Lord

amen what do what does family mean to

you what does family mean to you I think

we each probably have a little bit of a

different answer about that based on the

way we've brought been brought up the

way we were raised by our

parents for me there's when I was

thinking about this question there's a

song that comes to my mind um it's not a

serious song it's kind of a fun song by

an artist named Drew hul um who I

listened to a good bit um there's lines

about playing together there's lines

about going on vacation together there's

lines about um singing in the kitchen

together because family for me is a lot

about

fun but there are other lines to say

we're all in this together that we laugh

together in the rain even when things

aren't

pretty see I think there's some

poignancy to that the purpose of what

Paul is saying in in this In this

passage is that we should behave as a

family a family is about being there

when things are

hard it's about experiencing the

greatest of Joys together caring deeply

for one another making memories

together carrying each other's burdens

when things are really

hard and helping one another see the

light when things are really

dark they can encourage you and pick you

up like no one else

can for me there's nobody that brings me

joy and makes me laugh like my family

there's nobody that makes me cry like my

family and there's no one else I want

advice from before my

family the last two weeks Courtney

Courtney and I uh my wife have had the

uh pleasure of Hosting my family in in

Bangkok for um for a long time and it

was it was really great it was so

encouraging it was um exactly what we

needed um it was refreshing um we got to

experience uh my parents as grandparents

and and get to um see the joy in their

faces when they get to hold hold our

little girl and care for her um family

can do things for you that nobody else

can and what Paul's saying In this

passage is that we in the church should

behave the same way that you do with

your

family we should behave like a true

family of faith for much of First

Timothy Paul has talked about the

Practical structures and roles within

the church somewhat like the business

model model of the church um in chapter

five that five that tone shifts a little

bit towards more personal aspects of the

way that the church should relate to one

another uh in 1 Timothy 5 we see that

the church should behave like a family

in the way that we relate to one another

care for one another serve one another

and discipline one another in the way

that we care for one another relate to

one another serve one another and

discipline one another so break it

breaks down into four key sections that

we're going to talk about we should take

care in the way that we relate to one to

different members in the congregation

that's verses 1 and 2 in verses 3-8

we'll talk about how we should make a

priority to care for the less fortunate

Among Us and those who are in need in

verses 9-16 we're going to talk about

how the Christian life is not just about

receiving but it's about serving as well

and in verses 17-25 we're going to talk

about how the church should care for

those in leadership and in moments

discipline them as

well so let's look again at verses 1 and

two do not n an older man but encourage

him as you would a father younger men as

brothers older women as mothers younger

women as sisters in all

Purity there's a growing belief in

society today that um regardless of of

age race gender sexual orientation and

wealth status that we should all be

treated the same and that idea does have

biblical truth in it um

we I'm reminded of of the the famous

line from the declaration of

independence of the United States right

all men are created equal okay that that

idea is is true biblically in a lot of

ways um we are all created in the image

of God men and women we are all created

in the image of God um we are all we

have all forsaken God equally our sin

condemns us the exact same way and we

all need an equal amount of Grace so

what is Paul trying to say here in the

way that we relate to one another what

he's trying to tell Timothy is that he

should take extreme care in the way that

he Shepherds his congregation Timothy is

a young pastor of a multigenerational

church he's going to be shepherding and

caring for people who are older than him

people who are younger than him people

who are the same age people who are he's

going to be sheering men and women he's

going to be shepher married people and

single

people and Paul's saying you can't

relate all of those people the same

way he's telling them to act in wisdom

not to show partiality or Prejudice

based on anything raging from age to

wealth to anything he's telling them to

act in wisdom as he Shepherds and cares

for the family of

Faith this kind of we have to contrast

this a little bit with uh First Timothy

4:12 which says let no one despise you

for your youth but set the Believers as

an example in speech and conduct in love

and faith and Purity so in 1 Timothy

4:12 Paul is telling Timothy don't let

the older people within your

congregation look down on you or push

you around because of your youth you're

the pastor of the church you have to

step into a leadership role but in

chapter five what he's telling him is

you can't just relate to everybody the

same you're going to Shepherd everyone

differently you're going to lead people

differently because people are different

people you're going to have to relate to

people different ways we have different

interests we have different Hobbies we

have different sins that plague us

what he's saying here

is you know the idea is that we we do

this innately right we relate to people

differently you know as a kid I related

to my parents differently I knew which

parent I uh didn't want to find out that

I had done something wrong I knew which

parent to go to if I wanted to ask for

permissions for something that maybe I

the other one would say no to um I knew

which parent to go to if I had got a

really good grade and I wanted a lot of

encouragement

um each of you probably experienced

something similar to this when you were

growing

up the point is intuitively we do treat

people

differently

um while I may relate to my parents

differently with different levels of

respect with different styles of

communication uh I always try to relate

to my family with

love um and so when we read this passage

and we see what Paul says about relating

to one another that should be our

foremost uh foremost command here um our

relationships within the church should

not be defined by rebuke um by looking

for ways to tell people what they're

doing what they're what what they're

doing is wrong uh but instead by

encouragement uh by respect uh by love

uh Jesus says they will know that you

are my disciples by Your Love he doesn't

say that you'll know your my disciples

by your

theology um by your catechisms by your

sacraments all of those things are

good but the thing he says first and

foremost we should be known by is the

way we love one

another do you think this church is

known by its

love would you people in with the people

in your life the people you go to small

group with the people people you

interact with on Sunday mornings Sunday

afternoons uh would they say that you're

known by the way that you love

people we're supposed to love our

neighbors as

ourselves are you loving your

neighbor are you caring for the people

around

you love can look like a lot of

different things love can look like

respecting an elder for their advice and

their encouragement um love can look

like encouraging a younger person when

they are airing or steering them on back

onto the straight

path uh love can look like caring for a

widow as we're going to talk about later

In this

passage you know the way I love my my

grandmother uh versus my sister is

different and and Paul's saying that

both of those things are good and we

have to be conscious of the differences

in each of those

situations um as Paul continues in first

Timothy 5 we're going to we're going to

have great examples of the ways that we

can love those around

us so let's turn back to our text uh and

continue in verse

three uh so it says honor widows who are

truly widows some return to their

parents H grandchildren let them first

learn to show godliness to their own

household and to make some return to

their parents for this is pleasing in

the sight of God she who is truly a

widow left alone has set her hope on God

and continues in supplications and

prayers night and day but she who is

self-indulging is dead even while she

lives

yes um I'm reminded of the words uh of

James

127 um religion that is pure and

undefiled before God the father is this

to visit orphans and widows in their

Affliction to keep oneself unstained

from the

world uh the world is selfish um the

Christian Life should be

selfless um the Christian Life should be

characterized by caring for the less

fortunate fortunate

um we don't earn Grace um through good

works um but because of the of the way

that Christ has served us and sacrificed

for us we should look to sacrifice for

others oftentimes we focus too much on

the personal nature of our relationship

with

Jesus uh we spend too much time talking

about what we're personally getting from

a sermon or a worship service um what

we're

how our our quiet time our personal time

with the Lord is

going um and how the word the Lord is

working in our lives personally and we

don't look at the people around us and

see how they're

doing the Christian church should be a

fellowship of Believers not a bunch of

individuals focused on themselves and

their own personal

growth when we focus our lives on others

we will grow in Christ because that's

one of the things he's called us to

do Jesus spent so much time around the

poor The Afflicted the cast out and the

ignored we have to model Our Lives after

this there are people around us even in

this very congregation that need our

help part of Walking With Jesus is

sacrificing for the sake of

others you'll notice that Paul seems to

make some stipulations to his command to

care for widows here in chapter 5 um and

it's important for us to understand um

why he's he's he's making

these uh points um and and setting

widows in different categories um so

let's start with verse four and we're

going to read verse 7 and 8 again uh but

if a widow has children or grandchildren

let them first learn to show godliness

to their own household to make some

return to their parents for this is

bless this is pleasing in the sight of

God uh command these things as well so

that may they may be without uh may be

without reproach but if anyone does not

provide for his relative and especially

for members of his household he has

denied the faith and is worse than an

unbeliever so what we see here is that

uh the church has um what we generally

Call a Duty of care um for its members

and uh especially in this passage widows

um so what Paul is saying here is is is

widows who are true widows he makes that

uh he he has that category true widows

true widows are people who have no

family their they they have no family

whatsoever um they have no children to

care for them um they have no

grandchildren to care for them their

husband is obviously gone um their

parents are gone um true widows who have

no one else um now Paul Paul obviously

says th that kind of

person is someone the church should

immediately care for U the other

category is widows who have uh who have

family um so widows who have family uh

what Paul says here is that the church

should not supersede an individual's own

family to care for a widow it is the the

family's responsibility to care for them

um and

so we as a church have to address um

situations um individually um and and

figure out what's going on in each IND

these individual situations um so he's

Paul's telling us the church should have

a process to address each each one of

these

situations um

so at when we take in widows we care for

them those true widows on the other hand

you know often times uh if a widow um

needs help and she is not being cared

for by her family it's because there's

been some some relational um problems

that have happened there some Brokenness

there um and I think the church in that

situation uh our our duty is to care for

that person but at the same time

encourage Restoration in the

relationship there um we have to

encourage them to to bridge that Gap

with their family because it is the

family's um responsibility to care for

them uh so there a difficult balance to

find here and there there are some

intricacies within what Paul is talking

about here um but the reality is for

each of us individually um we should

look for those who are in need in our

congregation um who need our help um who

we can serve um and you

know our job job is is to help them um

is to uh support them um is to help them

along

um to bring them to church if they need

to be brought to church um to provide

for their needs if that's necessary um

so as we move to the next section uh

Paul is going to give some uh intricate

details about um requirements for widows

who are going to be who who can be

enrolled in the church um who are like

officially a part part of church uh in a

church office as a widow um so let's

look at verses 9-6

again um I'm not going to read through

all of this again but you what you what

you'll see here is um basically a list

of qualifications um very similar to

what we saw in um uh the earlier portion

of this book when Paul is talking about

uh qualifications for elders as well so

um what we learned from this is that

like a widow is the widows who are

enrolled in the service of the church

are not just receiving charity there

this is like an official office was in

the church and they're they are

assisting and helping um the pastor the

elders the deacons to to serve the

church um and to make the church go

um so the ultimate point there is that

our Christian life is not just about

receiving but it's also about giving

it's about serving um

we look to the author of our faith as an

example of this right so so as we read

in our call to worship Jesus did not

count equality with God a thing to be

grasp right but he humbled himself

humbled himself even to the point of

death on a cross so that we could

receive Grace so that we could receive

mercy and we would not be condemned

right so our only response should be to

be willing to sacrifice as well we need

to be willing to serve as Jesus served

us

what are you willing to sacrifice for

your savior are you willing to sacrifice

some of your time are you willing to

sacrifice some of your

money these are things that we need to

think about when we talk about caring

for the people in our

congregation often we view the Christian

Life as transa

transactional uh we view the church as

an entity whose responsibility is to

serve our needs we don't think about the

way that we can serve the church

the reality is that we should give as

much to the church as we're receiving

are you coming to church every Sunday

just expecting to um receive some sort

of spiritual power up uh and go back

out we're filled up on Sunday so that we

can pour out to those who need us around

us in our communities in our

congregation but we can also serve in

our

church we have to look for opportunities

to serve our neighbors and our

communities in Genesis 12 um when God

promises Abraham that he will become

this great nation one of the things that

he says is that you will be blessed so

that you can be a

blessing how can you be a blessing to

those around

us because everyone in this room has

been blessed every one of us has been

blessed how are you being a

blessing are there ways that even now

you could be be serving the

church um are you musically gifted could

you help lead worship um could you help

welcome people on Sunday mornings and

pass out

bulletins could you participate in a

care group so that we can further the

fellowship with this church not just on

Sundays but throughout the

week look for ways that you can serve

you can bless and even sacrifice for

church some of the qualifications that

uh that Paul has for widows we don't

necessarily need to get into the into

the weeds with those um but there are a

couple things that I want to note um the

first thing is this U Paul is Paul talks

about um uh younger widows struggling

with idleness and gossip and this desire

to be married again um and and you know

when I read that one of the things that

I think immediately is is uh for those

who are single Among Us uh singleness

can be difficult it's not wrong to long

for a

relationship but can be a hindrance to

your walk with God if it becomes the

most important thing in your

life it can be lonely but be encouraged

that God sees you he knows you he cares

for you don't allow having a

relationship to take the place of the

Lord in your life you know this this can

happen to people who are in a

relationship even people who are married

if you start to go to your uh boyfriend

or your girlfriend girlfriend or your

spouse for things that you should be

getting from

God that's a problem and that's

something that's going to start sin is

going to find a foothold there and

that's the second thing that I see from

this is um this idea of Gossip um

finding its root in idleness um when we

allow ourselves to um be too idle be um

to not have uh a a something we're

working towards in our relationship with

the Lord um that's a the door is cracked

open for sin to come in um and one of

the things the Bible says over and over

again is that the tongue is kind of this

uh the the gateway drug to S sin a

little bit um and that's why James says

it's so important so we tame our tongue

right so gossip is is something that

that we all struggle with we can all

find ourselves as as gossips um but when

we are focused on the Lord when he is

our number one thing in our lives and

when we're growing with

him uh now this final section of

verses

um I could preach an entire sermon on

just these eight verses um there's a lot

going on here uh but today we're

basically going to take a a satellite

view and just look at a few key points

um so there are four main parts of this

this this group of eight verses uh the

care of Elders the defense of Elders the

discipline of Elders and the appointment

of Elders and at the very end there's um

kind of a personal note um to Timothy

that Paul gives him um the first two

verses talk about how the church should

take special care of Elders especially

those responsible for preaching in the

church uh what Paul is saying here is

that it's the duty of the church to

support um an elder or a pastor in this

position uh both materially and

spiritually they shouldn't put too much

strain of leading the church on one

person so that they become burnt out um

which is a phrase we we often use to

just talk about you know how people get

tired so tired that they just can't even

function really in their role um the

church needs to care for elders in this

position and acknowledge that they need

adequate times of rest um and

refreshment uh because they're pouring

out so much of themselves um when

they're preaching and teaching and sh

sheering a

church um so this why often churches

will allow pastors or Elders like what's

called a sabatical it's like a time away

to rest and refresh and focus on their

personal relationship with the Lord um

which sadly can often be pushed to the

side when they are doing so much in in

in uh for leading the church uh Paul's

also saying that the church should

materially support um pastors that that

their their leaders shouldn't um live

like the live in in in uh in need um

that whether that's that salary is

coming from the church or um from some

other profession that the church needs

to make sure that the the Pastor Elder

in this position is is taken care of um

you know Paul experienced this in

different ways on his his missionary

Journeys um you know there were churches

that supported him and then there were

other times when Paul Paul made money

himself as a temp maker um and so you

know there is no right or wrong way for

the church to do this it's just the

church's responsibility to make sure

that um an elder a pastor in this

position is um is cared for

um so verse 19 uh talks about the the um

defense of Elders um in this verse Paul

says that the church should not permit

baseless accusations against Elders um

what he means by this is accusations

made by one person um because later on

he says uh accusations corroborated by

two and three two or three Witnesses

should be heard out um and and action

should be taken uh this is a really

difficult

um task to deal with in the church today

over the past few years we have seen

um many many church leaders um who have

been uh perpetrating sin for a long time

perpetrating abuse for a long time um

and because only one person um was

talking about it that that abuse

continued that sin continued um on the

other hand you've also had um ministers

falsely accused and in the world we live

in today it's this uh cancel everybody

World um

when the action that that we take as

Society is condemn first and ask

questions

later uh you don't have to prove your

innocence anymore you have to prove like

you're just immediately assumed that

you're guilty if somebody accuses you of

something you're guilty if you did

anything wrong or said anything that

isn't appropriate you're guilty you're

done that's it there's no

Grace so how do we deal with this how do

we follow what Paul is talking about

here where we don't want abuse and

sinfulness to be continuing from elders

but we also don't want to corroborate

false accusations I think it's really

really difficult balance to find um and

what Paul tells us is is just if there

are

more than one person accusing you have

to approach each individual situation as

its own thing um and if there are more

people accusing then what happens is we

have we we we should rebuke that person

publicly public sin should be met with

public discipline that's what he says in

um

verse

um so

Paul is trying to help us understand

that um we should not allow people who

are in a position of authority people

who in his position of of leadership

within a church um to be um without uh

checks and balances um that these people

need to we When sin occurs um we have to

discipline the people the same way

without

bias um and so

the Christian Life is is about Grace and

forgiveness at its core at the same time

we have to we have to protect the people

of our congregation from sin from abuse

from um

indiscretion um and the reality is that

sin has consequences when we become

Believers we don't become perfect that's

just the reality of our situation right

um we are sinners and we're going to

continue to sin the hope is that we

would draw closer to the Christ every

day and we would sin

less but sin is still is still has a

foothold in our lives for the most

part and the reality is that sin has

consequences and so when sin occurs

those consequences have to be

felt we want

restoration but at the same time we need

conviction if we just let someone keep

getting off free there's no chance for

conviction

conviction is coming to the realization

about one's own sin one's own guilt um

and it's still an important part of our

walk with Jesus

daily um so these three previous points

lead to the last idea that Paul States

in verse 22 he says that because of how

difficult it is to be an elder the

public light having your walk with

Christ under a

microscope uh that Timothy should be

cautious in quickly appointing Elders um

he should be wise and discern if someone

is truly spiritually mature enough to

step into the role of

leadership as we come to a close today

uh remember above all else in this

passage that we are a family of Faith um

if we adhere to the first directive that

Paul gives us in chapter 5 the rest

becomes far

easier so if you hear nothing else today

hear this treat one another with love

and compassion and relate with one

another with the respect due to the age

and position of that person in the

church care for the widows in the church

like they are your own mother listen to

the older men in the church like they

are your own father speak peacefully and

respectfully to the people of your age

and younger as if they were your

brothers and

sisters we all just want to be a one big

happy family

right let us be known by our love Above

All

Else and that love should take the form

of service often times think of the ways

that you could serve your church even

now we're all gifted in various ways

and I can promise you that the church

could use your gifts right

now think about the ways that you might

be able to use your gifts to make the

church

grow take special care to find ways to

Aid the less fortunate and the neediest

Among Us your church and its members

need you just as much as you need them

let's

pray Lord we pray that this church and

its people would be known for the way we

love one

another we pray that Lord we also pray

that as we love one another that we

would follow in the footsteps of your

son and look for ways to serve one

another

sacrificially Lord let us love and serve

the people around us abundantly father

we pray that in all these things we

would keep you first and foremost in our

hearts and our lives we love you
