before we look at our text uh this

afternoon I I want to give a review of

what has happened so far in The

Narrative of Jonah and so what was what

was the ninevites problem in chapter one

we read that their problem was that they

were so wicked that they had become

extremely offensive to the

Lord in Jonah 1 verse 2 it tells us or

it tells Jonah um arise go to Nineveh

that great City and call out against it

for the evil has come up before

me and so the the story of Jonah in some

ways reminds us of the story of the city

of Sodom and Gamora that God destroyed

because of its people's great

wickedness God is righteous uh which we

sang about this morning and uh which aan

Tim mentioned as he was leading the

music and so because God is righteous it

means that he always does what is good

he always does what is right and in

order for God to uphold his

righteousness he must punish those who

are evil and break his

Commandments he wouldn't be righteous if

he didn't he wouldn't be a good judge of

the earth if he didn't do this and so

the the first strike against Nineveh was

that the the ninevites were evil before

the Lord they were not holy and so they

attacked God's righteousness and his

Holiness the second strike against

Nineveh was that it was in the land of

Assyria which meant it wasn't part of

the land of

Israel they weren't included in God's

chosen people that God had made a

special promise to to be a God to them

he hadn't promised them all the same

blessings that he had promised the

nation of Israel

and so in chapter one we read of Jonah's

problem he refuses to take God's message

to Nineveh and takes off in the opposite

direction God has every right to destroy

Jonah for his sin against

him at the end of chapter 1 and the

beginning of chapter 2 we see that this

is not God's plan so out of God's

righteous love he disciplined Jonah by

sending a storm while he was on a ship

on the

sea and Jonah knows the the storm is his

fault and so he convinces the sailors on

on board the ship with him to throw him

overboard God is a God full of mercy and

Grace again that we sing about this

morning God actually rescues Jonah from

drowning because he is merciful and

gracious God had every right to allow

Jonah to drown because of his

Disobedience but God rescued

him so at the beginning of chapter 3

which is our text today we have these

two accounts of great sin the first

account is of Jonah God has shown grace

and mercy to Jonah Jonah is one of his

prophets one of his people so we might

expect God would rescue him even though

he was a great

sinner the question that remains is what

will happen to the extremely Wicked city

of Nineveh whose people are not part of

Israel God's special people will God

destroy it or will he extend his grace

and mercy to them like he did to Jonah

so let's look at our text and find

out then the word of the Lord came to

Jonah the second time saying arise go to

Nineveh that great City and call out

against it the message that I tell you

so Jonah arose and went to Nineveh

according to the word of the Lord now

Nineveh was an exceedingly great City

three days journey in breath Jonah began

to go into the city going a Day's

Journey and he called out yet 40 days

and Nineveh shall be

overthrown and the people of Nineveh

believed God they called for a fast and

put on sackcloth from the the greatest

of them to the least of them the word

reached the king of Nineveh and he arose

from his throne removed his robe covered

himself with sackcloth and sat in ashes

and he issued a proclamation and

published through Nineveh by the decree

of the king and his Nobles let neither

man nor Beast herd nor flock taste

anything let them not feed or drink

water but let man and Beast be covered

with a sackcloth and let them call out

mightily to God let everyone turn from

his evil way and from the violence that

it is in his hands who knows God may

turn and relent and turn from his Fierce

anger so that we may not perish when God

saw what they did how they turned from

their evil way God relented of the

disaster that he had said he would do to

them and he did not do it

the grass withers and the flower Fades

but the word of our God will stand

forever and the first point I I would

like to look at in our text today is

that God's saving love that rescues from

wrath it transcends all

boundaries and so let's look briefly at

God's

love God's love for for Nineveh we see

that by God sending Jonah to take his

message to them a second

time God has a message to asend to them

and there is nothing that will stand in

his way of getting that message to them

and so God's love is steadfast and

nothing will prevent him from loving

those that he has set out to

love and what are the the two main ways

that God shows his love in our

text he shows it through his grace and

mercy we see several times in our text

how God displayed his love to Nineveh

through

Grace he gives them good things that

they do not deserve that they are

undeserving of Nineveh is notoriously

Wicked but we see God's Grace by giving

them 40 days before he will destroy the

city and we also see God's grace in the

message

itself God used the preaching of his

message to convict those who he wanted

to rescue from sin

in verse four we see the message Jonah

has been commanded to

preach yet 40 days and Nineveh shall be

overthrown and from from this message we

don't know if God will relent of his

righteous wrath against Neva sin but

when we look at chapter 4 it sheds light

back on chapter 3 and we see that it was

a message of Love sent by God

what looked like a message of

condemnation was really a message meant

for

salvation In 4:2 Jonah gives us the

reason he disobeyed God the first time

he was commanded to go to

Nineveh and it says and he prayed to the

Lord and said oh Lord is this not what I

said when I was yet in my country this

is why I made haste to flee to Tarsus

for I knew that you are a gracious God

and merciful slow to anger and abounding

in steadfast love and relenting from

disaster and so Jonah knew God's

character he knew that God was a God who

loves to save and that the message that

he was to preach could very well be

intended as a message of Grace rather

than a message of

Destruction and what about God's mercy

we see God's mercy toward Nineveh and

that he relented of the punishment that

he said that he would do to him he did

not overthrow them he did not destroy

them and so we've looked at at God's

saving love expressed through his grace

and mercy let's look now at how that

saving love transcends all

boundaries let's look at neva's Great

sin one boundary we would think that

would prevent God from loving Nineveh

would be their great sin against God

they are oozing with

sin and we see

that and it's ultimately a sin against

God every sin that we commit even if it

involves someone else it's ultimately a

sin against God and so nineveh's great

sin didn't prevent God from rescuing

Nineveh they were extremely Wicked and

offensive to God but he chose to save

them what about nineveh's

nationality neva's nationality also

didn't keep God from rescuing them from

destruction Assyria was a great threat

to Israel's National Security they had

to oppressed Israel and so in Jonah's

eyes God was calling him to go and to

possibly save his enemies and the

enemies of his Nation

and so Jonah's sinful heart towards

Nineveh prevented him from going and

preaching the message of hope that God

had given him and so he set up

boundaries for himself and said I will

not go and preach to my

enemies but God didn't hold the same

mentality as Jonah and so we see in our

text that God doesn't put up boundaries

around those he who he will rescue and

so neither should we and it's easy for

us to to put up boundaries on those that

are around us and say God shouldn't love

this person for this and this it's easy

to to look at someone else's sin that

that rubs us the wrong way or someone

who actually sins against us and say God

should not show them

Grace and the story of Jonah shows us

that we all need God's grace the story

of Jonah shows us that we are all need

in need of God's mercy we are all

sinners who have offended our righteous

God we are undeserving of God's love and

it is only by his grace that we can be

rescued and when we have these desires

of wanting God to restrict his love and

mercy to others we need to realize that

we are acting like Jonah we are putting

up boundaries that God doesn't have so

we need to take them

down we should want our our church to

look as diverse as possible because God

doesn't make distinctions between people

groups he doesn't make distinctions

between

nationalities God loves the

Nations we should desire for those who

are sinners and who have committed

notorious sin to be part of the

church we should desire for God to show

others the same grace and mercy that he

has shown

us we've looked at how God's saving love

that rescues from his wrath transcends

all

boundaries so how do people receive

God's saving love let's look now at how

God's saving love that rescues from his

wrath is received through faith and

repentance the first way uh the

ninevites respond to God's word is

belief it says in in verse 5 and six

verses 5 and six and the people of n

put on sackcloth from the greatest of

them to the least of them the word

himself with sackcloth and sat in

ashes the people and King they believe

God's word they believe that the

destruction God has said will come to

them really will come to them and notice

how quickly they respond to the message

in verse four it says Jonah began to go

into the city going a Day's Journey and

so Jonah Jonah only preached for for one

day and the S the city listens right

away the text also tells us that the

repentance was widespread throughout the

city it had also reached every societ

societal level of the city because it

says in verse 5 they called for a fast

and put on sackcloth from the greatest

of them to the to the least of

them and so the message that Jonah had

preached was taken seriously and it

spread

quickly and wouldn't it be wonderful if

this happened in

Bangkok it really could a Revival where

people responded to God's worth and

faith and

repentance we know it could happen

because we know God is gracious and

merciful and we see here another example

in Jonah of God's grace and also a

demonstration of his

power in Isaiah 55 10-11 we are told of

the power of the word of the

Lord says for as the rain and snow come

down from heaven and do not return there

but water the Earth making it bring

forth and Sprout giving seed to the

sewer and bread to the eater so shall my

word be that goes out from my mouth it

shall not return to me empty but it

shall accomplish that which I purpose

and shall succeed in the thing for which

I sent

it and so God's word is a powerful mean

that God uses to give Grace to those who

hear it He blesses people through it

when he has a specific P purpose for it

like he had for saving the ninevites it

will accomplish what he plann for it to

do we look at the the simple message of

Jonah we realize

that the power of God's L uh word is

great it doesn't come from the ability

of of Jonah to to u to preach the word

uh and it doesn't come from the

complexity of the word uh Jonah can you

imagine uh Jonah going and preaching to

the city of Nineveh the guy would rather

be anywhere else besides Nineveh and

preaching to the ninevites and Nineveh

it was the last place that he wanted to

be and the last thing that he wanted to

do and Jonah doesn't have the the

ability or the desire to give the grace

needed to change the ninevites heart but

God

does the ninevites don't believe uh

God's word because of Jonah's rhetorical

skill but rather because God's word it

targeted their hearts and minds and it

accomplished the plan that he had for

it God loved the ninevites and so he

sent his word to them as a means of

Grace to rescue them from his

wrath and the living and act of word of

the Lord it not only brings people to

Faith In God's promises it also convicts

people of their

sins the nites responded to God's word

by

repenting and uh verses 5-8 we read and

the people of n believed God they called

for a fast and and put on sackcloth from

the greatest of them to the least of

them the word reached the king of

Nineveh and he arose from his throne

removed his Rob covered himself with

sackcloth and sat in ashes and he issued

a proclamation pished through

ninova by the decree of the king and his

Nobles let neither man nor Beast herd

nor flock taste anything and let them

all cry out uh mightily

uh to the

Lord let everyone turn from his evil way

and from the violence that it is in his

hands and so the The Fast and the

sackcloth and the King sitting in ashes

they are all external ways that display

that display they are taking the offense

that they have committed against God

seriously and they are signs of

repentance Corey timbon a holocaust

Survivor tells in her memory

The Hiding Place about a conversation

she had with her dad on a train one day

she was about 10 years old and had read

u a poem The the previous year and in

the poem it had mentioned the word sex

sin and so she didn't know what sex sin

meant so she asked her father about it

and her dad turned to her and to her

surprise he said nothing and he stood up

and pulled down his suitcase that was on

the rack above their heads and he set it

down on the

floor and Cory's dad owned a watch and a

clock business and the suitcase was was

full of watches and spare parts that her

father had purchased that

morning and he has Corey will you carry

my suitcase off the train and she stood

up and she tugged at the

bag and she knew that she couldn't lift

it and told her father is too

heavy and her father replied yes and it

would be a pretty poor father who would

ask his little daughter to carry such a

load it's the same way Corey with

knowledge some knowledge is too heavy

for children when you were old and

stronger you can bear it but now you

must trust me to car it for

you and so

notice that the nites they don't do

anything to take care of their sin

they respond to God's message that was

given by Grace out of hearts that were

convicted by that same Grace but they

don't do anything to deal with their

sin and the reason is because they can't

the suitcase of their mountainous sin is

too heavy for them to carry it's too

heavy for them to do anything with and

so all they can do is receive God's word

by faith and repentance and hope in him

to lent in his wrath against them and so

we are just like Jonah and Nineveh and

that our sins are many and in the same

way we can't take care of them ourselves

it is too heavy of a burden for us to

carry we must have someone to carry it

for us and the good news is that there

is someone who loves us who

has oh in verse 9 we see the king's hope

who knows knows God may turn and relent

and turn from his Fier Fierce anger so

that we may not

perish and so his hope is in God it's

not certain it's shaky but it is

there he had hope that if they believed

in God and turned from their Wicked Ways

then he might save them the king's Hope

was in God he didn't know

well and God by his grace he has given

us his word so that we know our god well

we know God well because we know Jesus

well we know that he has carried our

sins to the Cross where he dealt with

them so that we would not

perish during his time on Earth he

preached that all those who trust in him

and repent will be

saved and in verse 10 we see that God

relents he relents of his

anger when God saw what they did how

they turned from their evil way God

relented of the disaster that he had

said he would do to them and he did not

do it so the nites didn't receive the

destruction that God said that he would

do to them they didn't reive the

destruction that their wickedness

deserved God because of his great love

for the nites showed them his grace and

mercy by sending them his message to

spare them from his

wrath and the story of Jonah is a a

story that reminds us that we can rest

assured that our righteous God who is

full of grace and mercy has relented of

his anger towards us because of our

sins all of those who have received his

message the message of Christ by faith

and repentance will be

saved our sins that are like Crimson

they have been washed white as

snow and so what have we seen in our

text today our God loves to rescue

sinners from wrath he loves to pour out

his grace and mercy upon

them and he hasn't set up boundaries to

prevent them or to prevent him from

pouring his love and mercy out on others

and so we should have the L Same Love

for others uh that God has for us and we

can rest assured that God has relented

of his anger towards us because we have

received his message of Salvation in

Christ through faith faith and

repentance let's go before him now and

pray and thank him for the wonderful

love that he has shown To Us by rescuing

us from his righteous

wrath dear Lord we we thank you so much

for your

gospel we thank you that you have shown

us your great love through your mercy

and Grace like you have shown uh like

you shown to the ninevites like you

shown to Jo uh

Jonah I pray that as we live our lives

de Lord I just pray that you will remind

us daily of your

gospel I pray that you will remind us of

your grace of your

mercy dear Lord uh not only so that we

can thank you and praise you for what

you've done for us and so that we are

assured of your salvation but also so

that we have

hearts that desire to see you pour out

your grace and mercy upon others you

don't have boundaries to Lord you have

not set up boundaries and said I am not

going to show my love and mercy and

Grace to people and so I pray that you

will help us not to to put up boundaries

either and I pray that if we have those

I pray that you will help us to take

them down we ask all this in Jesus name

amen
