text today is taken from the Gospel

of Luke just a few verses from Luke

chapter

1 and I'll read this to us and then we

also you can see it's also in tie on the

screen and we'll refer back to this as

well this is the word of God in the

sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent

from God to a city of Galilee named

Nazareth to a virgin betrothed to a man

whose name was Joseph of the House of

David and the virgin's name was Mary and

he came to her and said greetings o

favored one the Lord is with

you but she was greatly troubled at the

saying and tried to discern what sort of

greeting this might be and the angel

said to Hero not be

afraid do not be afraid Mary for you

have found favor with God and behold you

will conceive in your womb and bear a

son and you shall call his name

Jesus he will be great and will be

called the son of the most high and the

Lord God will give to him the Throne of

his father David

and he will reign over the house of

Jacob

forever and of his kingdom there will be

no

end since I'm a

virgin and the angel answered her the

holy spirit will come upon you and the

power of the most high will overshadow

you therefore the child to be born born

will be called holy the Son of God and

behold your relative Elizabeth in her

old age has also conceived a son and

this is the sixth month with her who was

called

baren for nothing will be impossible

with

God and Mary said behold I am the

servant of the Lord let it be to me

according to your word and the angel

departed from

her this is the word of

God on Christmas Eve in the year 1914 so

just 110 years ago from this month an

astonishing event happened in

Europe it was during the first world war

and this event happened as British

forces and German soldiers forces also

were engaged in trench warfare along an

area in Belgium and in part of France

known as the Western Front the Western

Front there are different accounts of

kind of how this happened how this

transpired but on Christmas Eve and into

part of Christmas Day the soldiers from

both sides of these

forces they observed a

ceasefire they laid down their weapons

and they observed a

truce and they came out of their

trenches they left their trenches to

meet with one another in an area between

the trenches on the battlefield known as

no man's

land and there are counts of soldiers

that were exchanging greetings with

opposing forces they were sharing food

and drinks they were sharing cigarettes

they were sharing uh life together

singing carols together together even

games of football broke out in an area

uh between the trenches there in that

Battlefield now uh and here are some

pictures some historic see if this will

move for me here there we

go so some actual photos from from that

time now the truce itself was shortlived

and it didn't happen all along the

western front it was really interesting

it just happened in some different

pockets of of the Skirmish of the

war and as higher military commands

found out you they sort of put an end to

it like get back to your trenches get

back um to your sides of the battle but

for a few hours Christmas Eve and

Christmas Day real peace real peace had

broken out in the midst of War real

peace so there was hostility between

these nations between multiple Nations

at war with one another in World War I

and yet there was

Fellowship where there had been just

hours before animosity

hatred and there was peace where there

had been violence where there had been

violence there's a film from 2005 I high

highly recommend it has some adult

themes and of course it deals with war

so take that into mind um for little

ones but it's called Jo Noel so French

title Joy Noel Merry Christmas joyous

Christmas and it's a cinematic retelling

of this

event which became known as the

Christmas

Truce in one poignant scene in the film

there's a German soldier who stands and

begins to sing so silent night which is

an originally originally written in

German so he begins to sing that out and

in the film he's an opera singer in

Germany and he's sent to war and so he

began singing out into the clear Dark

Night Silent Night

sh and the soldiers across the

battlefield the French uh British even a

Scottish uh uh Battalion they began

singing even some of the Scottish

soldiers get their bag pipes out and

begin

playing uh into the cold night air and

that in the film is what kind of stir up

this possibility of peace BEAST's

possibility of laying down their weapons

and and meeting with their fellow

men now this story this kind of story

and it's a real one it's a true one at

that when we hear something like this it

stirs our hearts right when I watch that

film I cry like singing style at night I

cry why is

that why is

that why does something like this why

does it stir us move us

is because it points to a deeper reality

of who we are it points to and unveils

and

reveals our deeper hopes and longings

desires we long for

peace we long for

peace we desire life we desire

flourishing we desire

Freedom we desire an end hostility and

violence and yet we see the world around

us we see the Brokenness we see War we

see hostility

still right now at this very moment as

We Gather relative

safety there is war raging right now in

different parts of the world right now

people don't have that sense of peace

they don't have that sense of safety

that we have right now

we see hatred among

people we see

animosity and we long for

kindness kindness to fellow

men we see hostility instead of Peace we

see it around us we read about it in the

news we see it and we also experience it

in our own hearts in our own

Hearts so we need the truth of Christmas

we need the truth of Christmas to keep

breaking breaking into our world

breaking into our hearts we

need a true and Lasting peace this is

the The Human Condition the human heart

cry this longing for peace is exactly

where uh Israel the people of Israel

were found at that

time Israel itself as a nation as a

people the Jewish people

we're not going to go into the depth of

the the story of the history of Israel

but we can talk about that soon and

later as Advent unfolds but at this

season there was great oppression of the

nation of Israel the people of Israel uh

because of the Roman

Empire and so uh

Rome a strong strong Empire uh would

conquer Nation they would uh come into

these nations and they would establish

their Rule and so Israel the nation of

Israel was living under the Roman Empire

living under occupation that was true of

the nation of Israel was true of the

city of Jerusalem city of of the of

Bethlehem as well all throughout that

region and

so God and some of the other sermons

will deal with the prophecy of Isaiah

the book of Isaiah but God had

promised God had promised to

deliver the nation of Israel the Jewish

people so there was ancient prophecy had

foretold of the one that would come so

God would deliver and God was going to

send one that would come to save

Israel and so of course the Israel

Israeli people the Jewish people Israel

uh the nation of Israel was longing for

that one to come and different parts of

the scriptures speak to that how long oh

God how long will we wait but the one to

come was going to be known as the

Messiah the Savior the one that would

come to deliver to deliver and so the

people were waiting they were waiting

there was this

anticipation generation after generation

how long oh God how long how

long and so what would happen would be

beyond what anyone could possibly

imagine if Rome was this great military

force of course they thought God is

going to send a

military might right a a military ruler

that will Vanquish our military foe

right that's what they were waiting

for Silent Night Sak this great uh

Carol kind of sets a scene for us silent

night holy

night all is calm all is bright round

Yan virgin mother and child holy infant

so Tinder and

Mild sleep in Heavenly peace sleep

in Heavenly peace next slide please

okay so young Mary understandably she

was filled with

Fear With

Fear and

confusion probably to see this Angelic

being this Angel before her and then

also the

message the message that this Angel was

bringing

and so immediately Gabriel speaks words

of Peace over her upon her do not be

afraid do not be

afraid Mary for you have found favor

God do not be afraid the coming birth of

this

baby is ushering in a new reality

you need not be afraid do not

fear this Jesus will be

great and this Jesus will be known as

the son of the most

high he will be given the Throne of his

father David he will

reign and his reign will have no end the

good King is Coming the Eternal King is

coming into this

world this is the Messiah this is the

promised one he has

come and Mary said to the angel how will

this be since I am a

Virgin Mary questions Gabriel

understandably how can this be how will

be and Gabriel goes on to explain to to

show how God will bring all of this

about she will bear the Holy One the

very Son of God

and at the very same time while Mary is

hearing this she is also hearing that

her relative

Elizabeth has conceived and is going to

have a son this is miraculous because

Elizabeth had not been able to conceive

she was Barren she was unable and had

not yet conceived had not yet born

children and yet this was happening in

fact she was 6 months

along with

child the text says nothing nothing

nothing will be

impossible with God and here we see Mary

at the end of the passage we read

tonight as far as we read Mary gives

praise unto God she submits herself to

this miraculous unfolding of all these

events to

come next slide please

silent

night holy night Shepherds Quake at the

sight Glory stream from Heaven afar

Heavenly hosts sing

Allelujah Christ the savior is born

Christ the savior is

born silent night holy night Son of God

loves pure light radiant beams from thy

holy face with the dawn of Redeeming

Grace Jesus Lord at thy birth Jesus Lord

at thy birth the lyrics of Silent Night

They underscore they really underline or

highlight if you will all that was

happening all that was transpiring with

the birth of

Jesus God's Saving

Grace God's Redeeming Grace was coming

into the world in and through

Jesus this is the message of

Christmas the Messiah has come the

Savior has come to

rescue to save

us Jesus was coming into this broken

world to save us to lead this broken and

sinful World in reconciliation unto God

so Christians celebrate the birth of

Jesus we remember that the Savior

entered the world as a humble

child a

baby a

baby but the narrative Arc of the Gospel

which we'll talk about as Advent

unfolds and as we look at year in and

year out it points

ahead to the work that Jesus would would

do to save us so Jesus comes to save us

how how would Jesus save

us how would Jesus

bring the peace that we long for and not

just a peace for here and now but how

would Jesus bring the Eternal peace how

would the Eternal King come to bring

Eternal peace to a world full of

violence

how would the Messiah truly

save the message of Christmas is the

message of the Gospel Jesus coming to

save

us by giving himself for

us you know that great text that we read

and sing and hear and preach so much

John 3:16 and 17 also here

is all about this very thing for God so

loved the world that he gave his only

son that whoever believes in him should

not perish but have eternal life eternal

peace Eternal Joy eternal life for God

did not send his son into the world to

condemn the

world but in order that the world might

be saved

that the world might be saved that the

world might be saved through him Jesus

world Jesus being born taking on flesh

to save

us from

ourselves to save us from ourselves the

lasting and true peace that we long for

only comes it only comes when we find

the true PE peace with God through Jesus

Christ the central message of the

Christian faith is that we are broken we

are sinful in and of

ourselves and we must be reconciled to

God we

must to reconcile that word to reconcile

it means to return to a state to a place

of wholeness rightness of goodness truth

beauty it's a place of

restoration

renewal our relationship with

God has been severed because of our sin

it's been broken because of our

sin God is

Holy and just and our sinful actions it

actually it drives us away from

God and his good will for

us that is the predicament of Humanity

that is what many scholars theologians

call The Human Condition it's kind of

where we find

ourselves that is the darkness that

induces

fear that is the darkness that induces

violence our sin is the source of hatred

our sin is the source of animosity

towards

others it is the cause of our own

Rebellion against

God it's the cause of so much

pain so much suffering in the

world so much suffering in our own

Hearts our own

lives our sin separates us from

God but Jesus enters into this Jesus

comes Jesus comes into a hurting world

to bring bring

healing to bring

hope the

Messiah has

come and as you read the gospels as you

read the story of Jesus and this is not

a spoiler alert but as we read about how

Jesus would do this he grows into a

man he uh is teaching and preaching and

healing and speaking words of peace and

Truth and Love to those that He

interacts with in the

scriptures and then he would give

himself he would give himself as a

sacrifice he would give himself and he

would die so that we when we turn to him

in faith may be reconciled to God Jesus

would do all of this this is the

trajectory of the this little baby's

life

so this is why we call the gospel this

is why it literally means good news good

news good news because Jesus gave

himself for us taking on our sin and

dying for us so Jesus gives us peace he

brings us true and eternal peace to be

found in God alone

in the Book of

Romans there's a verse that really sums

this up well verses uh 1 and two of

verse 5 therefore since we have been

justified by faith we have peace with

God we have

peace with God through our Lord Jesus

Christ through him we have also obtained

access by by faith into this

grace in which we

stand and we

rejoice in

hope in the glory of

God we have peace with God through Jesus

Christ when we turn to Jesus in

faith as we call upon him as our savior

our

Messiah we find

the peace that our souls long

for peace for

now even in the midst of all that this

life holds even in the midst of of

violence in our own lives around the

world around us

peace peace in the Prince of Peace

Jesus and a peace that is coming in

fullness

forever so peace in the midst of

darkness and fear now and then a peace

that we look to with an expectant hope

an expectant hope there's a quote that I

use uh and share so often because it

really speaks very clearly to the core

of who we are it's uh from

Augustine uh St Augustine he was the

bishop of Hippo city in Africa of Hippo

uh and this is from a book that he wrote

confessions and in that book he writes

this St Augustine writes this he said

thou talking about God thou Hast made us

for thyself oh

Lord and our

heart is

restless until it Finds Its rest in thee

you could also say it this way God you

created us you made us

and God we do not have peace we are not

at

peace

until our hearts find rest in the one

that is

peace the one that is peace so yes we

are restless do you feel that

restlessness you feel it we are without

peace until we come to know the Peace of

Christ and then even then when we

experience that restlessness that the

world will throw at us we again again go

to the prince of peace and receive that

peace again and again and again and we

will do that throughout this

lifetime as we hope and wait for the

Eternal and good King that is

coming next slide and thank

you as we hope the Eternal and good King

coming the last verse of Silent Night

reads this silent night holy

night wondrous star lend thy light with

the

angels let us sing Hallelujah to our

King Christ the savior is born Christ

the savior is

[Music]

born friends because Jesus has

come we may be reconciled to God and

find peace peace for the here and

now and peace in the midst of all that

is still wrong with the

world and when we become followers of

Jesus we become

ambassadors of hope we become

ambassadors of peace loving in and

caring for others with the love of

Jesus the G the love that Jesus has for

us and we give that we demonstrate that

to others so we become a people that

speak peace among

others because we're a people of hope

we're people that have hope for now and

we look ahead with a sure hope for the

day when Jesus will come again to

establish his eternal reign

Advent means coming Jesus has come and

he will come

again here we see the angels in the song

singing Hallelujah to our King so with

the angels it says let us sing so how do

we respond how do we respond how do you

take what you've heard and maybe what

you've heard again I've heard it many

times and how do we allow it to rest our

hearts how do we allow it to kind of

shake us again remind us or maybe for

the first time in our lives to consider

this so how do we respond to this you

know when we gather as a church our hope

is always that we would have people that

do not yet believe maybe here with us

maybe coming and people coming saying I

don't know what I believe about

Christianity I don't know what I believe

about Jesus I've heard some things and I

have some real questions I don't know

what I believe and here's our hope Grace

City and here's our hope for you if if

you would articulate that that I'm not

sure what I think about all of this and

our hope is this that first of all we

would say we are so thankful that you

here and we would hope that you would

really feel a sense of Welcome among

this community and that your questions

we honor those questions we realize

those are real honest questions we want

to engage with you about those so that

would be the first thing I would say to

you but then what I would ask you is

this would you consider

this because what if it is

true what if it is true what if there

was a little baby born 2,000 years ago

and peace real peace was breaking into

the world and that peace is coming again

what if it's true so ask those questions

ask those questions of someone that does

claim this does claim to believe this

and say how in the world do you believe

this tell me tell me because I have real

questions so engage with this

today I ask of

you and then

Christian we also as every week as we

look again at the gospel and we say how

do I believe do I believe this have I

lived in a way this week that says yeah

I believe this and so let us be reminded

again this Advent

season that the Messiah has come the

Prince of Peace has come here and now

Jesus is alive he's reigning and

ruling in spite of all we

experience in spite of all we experience

be

encouraged again in the Gospel of Jesus

Christ

and ask God to show you how you may

extend his peace even this week who

needs to know of the Peace of Jesus in

your life right now maybe even have

someone coming to mind Jesus or God is

impressing upon you right now even

someone that you might speak that word

of peace to you this

week this

week be encouraged in all of this the

darkness in this world it still produces

fear doesn't it it still produces fear

and people need to hear of the good news

the great light that is shining in that

Darkness people need to hear of great

news of great joy so may we great City

may we be a

people that share about this with others

may we be people of Peace extending the

Peace of Christ this week this

week let's

pray Lord Jesus

May the story of Christmas ReSound in

our hearts and Minds

again may we be a people that speak your

peace into the dark voids of this

world you've come to

save you will come

again help us as we await that day help

us to extend love and care and peace to

others your

peace help us oh God and come Lord Jesus

we pray come Lord Jesus we pray all of

this in your holy name

amen
