as you guys may remember uh for this

uh Christmas season what we like to call

Advent at uh in the church we have been

talking about Christmas carols in our

sermons um the purpose of this series is

kind of threefold um first we want to

just admire the uh Beauty in the poetry

and the music of Christmas carols um

second we want to see in scripture where

the lyrics come from uh and third we

want to see uh we want the lyrics of the

songs when we sing them to hit us a new

to really refresh our hearts as we

celebrate the coming of the Messiah at

Christmas um when we sing the same songs

year after year at Christmas um we sing

Silent Night over and over again we sing

Angels We Have Heard in high over and

over again our hearts can become

calloused to what is really happening at

Christmas the fact that God is coming to

us in flesh taking on flesh and becoming

a baby um and so hopefully through this

series We As we sing Christmas carols we

will have a renewed purpose A Renewed um

understanding of what's really happening

um during the the Christmas season so um

every week we'll sing The Chosen

Christmas Carol the the one that we're

preaching about as a response song After

the sermon and and our hope is that when

you sing that song the words of the

sermon will fall aresh on your heart on

your soul um and that you'll respond to

it in kind um so Tim began our series

with a look at Silent Night a couple

weeks ago um and he talked about how the

birth of Jesus is the dawn of Redeeming

Grace and what that means what that

looks like um last week John N talked

about hark the herald hark the herald

angel sing and he he talked about Christ

as The Peacemaker even from the

manger um this week we get to take a

look at what is what is my favorite

Christmas hymn um and it's Come Thou

Long expected Jesus um Charles Wesley

wrote this hymn about 300 years ago um

over 300 years ago and um the lyrics

have not lost any weight uh even today

and it it's it really um is rich and

full of Truth um and so I want to start

by simply reading the lyrics they're

going to be on the screen but they're

also in the bulletin if you want to look

at that um so it starts Come Thou Long

expected Jesus born to set thy people

free from our fears and sins release us

let us find our rest in thee Israel's

strength and consolation hope of all the

Earth Thou Art

dear desire of every nation Joy of every

longing

heart born thy people to deliver born a

child and yet a King born to reign in us

forever now thy gracious Kingdom bring

by thine own eternal spirit rule in all

our hearts Alone by thine all sufficient

Merit raise us to thy glorious

Throne this hymn is so scripturally and

theologically Rich I wish we had time to

break down every single line today but

we don't um so I want to focus on a few

of the lines here and there and just

talk about where we see that in

scripture how Jesus fulfills that in

scripture um so we'll discuss the the

opening four lines Come Thou Long

let us find our rest in thee and then

we'll talk about um some lines in the

second second verse as well born thy

people to deliver born a child and yet a

King born to reign in us forever now

that gracious Kingdom bring uh we're

going to be jumping around a little bit

in scripture today but our main Focus

text is comes from Luke 2 and it follows

up the passage that aanti preached on

last week it's uh we will'll read from

Luke 2

21-38 um In this passage Mary and Joseph

are presenting Jesus at the temple um at

33 days of age um and this was uh

following the purification ritual um

that that happened after Jesus was

circumcised at 8 years old 8 days old um

following the Old Testament um law um

and the reason that is important that

they follow this is because Jesus came

to fulfill the law and not to abolish it

so it's important that um in the birth

of Jesus his parents are following along

with the rituals of their

people um so while they're at the temp

temple they're going to encounter two

older Jewish people um named Simeon and

Anna um and I want you to um notice how

they respond to meeting Jesus these

people have been waiting waiting

patiently for the Messiah for their

entire lives and they have the pleasure

of meeting meeting him in this in this

little baby this month-old baby and I

want us to pay attention to how they

respond uh so if you have your Bible

open it with me to Luke Chapter 2 if you

don't it's on the screen obviously um

and so we're going to start in uh verse

21 uh and at the end of8 days when he

was circumcised he was called Jesus the

name given by the angel before he was

conceived in the womb and when the time

came for their purification according to

the law of Moses they brought him up to

Jerusalem to present him to the Lord as

is as is written in the law of the Lord

every male who first opens the womb

Shall be Called holy to the Lord and to

offer a sacrifice according to what is

said in the law of the Lord a pair of

turtle does or two young pigeons now

there was a man in Jerusalem whose name

was Simeon and this man was righteous

and devout waiting for the consolation

of Israel and the Holy Spirit was upon

him and it had been revealed to him by

the holy spirit that he would not see

death before he had seen the Lord's

Christ and he came in spirit into the

temple and when the parents brought the

Child Jesus to do for him according to

the custom of the law he took him up in

his arms and blessed God and said Lord

now you are letting your servant depart

in peace according to your word for my

eyes have seen your salvation that you

have prepared in the presence of All

Peoples a light for Revelation to the

Gentiles and For Your Glory to your

People

Israel and his father and his mother

marveled at what was said about him and

and Simeon blessed him and said to Mary

his mother behold this child is

appointed for the fall and rising of

many in Israel and for a sign that is

opposed and a sword will will pierce you

through your own soul also so that the

thoughts from many hearts may be

revealed and there was a prophetess Anna

the daughter of fenu of the tribe of

Asher she was advanced in years having

lived with her husband seven years from

when she was a virgin and then as a

widow until she was 84 she did not

depart from the temple worshiping with

fasting and prayer night and day and

coming up at that very hour she began to

speak give thanks to God and speak of

him to all who were waiting for the

Redemption of

Jerusalem will you pray with

me Lord Lord we're so thankful that

2,000 years ago you came to Earth as a

child we're so thankful that you took on

flesh with the sole purpose of redeeming

us so that we may once again draw near

to you Lord I pray that you would speak

through me today and Reveal Your gospel

through this Christmas hymn in Jesus

name

amen one of my favorite books to read uh

my daughter Olivia is a book called

Don't Forget to Remember um and uh it's

a has beautiful it's beautifully

Illustrated and every page talks about

um how we see we can see God in creation

um and it does so in a way that is

relatable to Children which I think is

such a talent um that the author of that

book has um there are so many great

truths from that book but the the last

page always strikes me every time I read

it it says even on days that you forget

what is true don't forget to remember

God won't forget

you and I'll be honest with you guys uh

I read that book to Olivia almost every

day um she loves it um and when I get to

the last page I'm really the one who

needs to read that and hear that more

than more than she does um it's really

easy to think that God's forgotten us a

lot of the time it's really easy um to

think that our prayers are going to go

unanswered that our uh promises that God

has made with us are going to be

unfulfilled um it's encouraging to me to

read that book and uplifts me and it

reminds me of the faithfulness of my

heavenly father um because the truth is

we do we serve a faithful God but the

evil one wants us to think that we don't

that God is not going to answer our

prayers that God is not going to be

faithful to us that's the original

Temptation right that's what that's what

the serpent wanted to convince Adam and

Eve of in the garden that God is not who

you think he is but let me tell you the

promises of God can always be trusted

and our God is faithful to

deliver he wants what our passage in in

Luke uh uh what we see in our passage in

Luke what we see in this hymn is that

truth is that we that we believe in a

God who keeps his promises if he has

made a promise he will keep it um this

is broken down into three key themes for

us today and what we're going to talk

about they're waiting fulfillment and

celebration waiting fulfillment and

celebration so nobody really likes

waiting do they nobody likes to wait in

line for anything you want we want

things immediately we like to have

things when we want them yet we spend so

much of our lives in various states of

waiting whether that's waiting to find

the person we're going to marry um

waiting to get news from employ a new

employer or university waiting to get

test results back whether that's from uh

in school or from a doctor um we spend

most of our Lives worrying about

tomorrow even though Jesus tells us not

to because that's how we're hardwired

we're anxious about tomorrow because we

we're not sure we want to be in control

um and we don't have the faith in The

God Who is in control um our lives are

stricken with anxiety because we're

always waiting on something we're and

ultimately we're also waiting on God's

kingdom to come on Earth in power and to

fully restore creation to how it's

supposed to be so let's look back at

Luke 2 and think about simeon's

experience waiting

so verses 25 and 26 say now there was a

man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon

and this man was righteous and devout

waiting for the constellation of Israel

and the Holy Spirit was upon him and it

had been revealed to him by the holy

spirit that he would not see death

before he had seen the Lord's

Christ I imagine Simeon going to the

temple almost daily praying

hoping let this be the day that I meet

the Messiah let this day that I meet the

Lord's Christ

praying come long way to

Messiah you know what's amazing he gets

to meet the Messiah he's waited his

whole life of this experience and his

waiting really typifies what all of

Israel has done for thousands of years

but especially the last 400 years of

their

history we have to understand that the

first time that um The Prophecy of the

Messiah the first Prophecy of the

Messiah that's ever written in scripture

is all the way back in Genesis 3:15 when

um God says he's cursing the serpent

after his deception of Adam and Eve but

he says that one day the seed of the

woman that is the Messiah will come and

crush the head of the

serpent so from that moment on the

people of Israel are waiting they're

waiting they're waiting they're waiting

through the covenants that God has made

with Abraham and Isaac and Jacob and

they're waiting for the consolation of

Israel as it says in our hymn and in

this

chapter we see repeatedly through the

Gen we the the who the Messiah is is is

shaped repeatedly through the Genesis

narrative as we as God makes covenants

with Abraham and Jacob and says that the

Nations will be blessed through the

Messiah and through the people of Israel

and um and God promises Isaac that um he

will make an Everlasting Covenant with

with The Offspring of Isaac and then

finally in Genesis 49:10 we read that

this the scepter

uh that the scepter will not depart from

Judah nor the ruler staff from between

his feet until he to whom it belongs

shall come and The Obedience of the

Nations shall be

his this king that's being described in

this verse is

Jesus and the Israelites have been

waiting for him from before they were a

nation from the before they came out of

Egypt um and they had been waiting up

until this

moment they've waited they've sung

they've they've prayed come long way to

Messiah for thousands of years they've

prayed that

um during those thousands of years

they've been oppressed when they strayed

from God they've been exiled they've

come back to Jerusalem they've rebuilt

the temple and they're still waiting

even in this 400 years of what we what

we like to call the the years of Silence

um when they come back to Jerusalem they

are still living under the thumb of

opposing Nations and even in the time

when Jesus is born the Israelites are

still living under Roman rule they're

living under a pagan dictator

dictatorship um so he see in Simeon the

yearning the longing the pain the grief

of thousands of years of waiting for

this long-expected

Jesus so imagine what this might have

been like prophecies passed down

generation to generation hoping that

your generation will be the one to see

this fulfillment happen hoping your

generation will be the one to see the

kingdom of God fully restored as in days

of old of what they thought was going to

happen yet it doesn't happen over and

over again over and over again they're

waiting they're waiting we like the

Israelites are in a period of waiting

aren't we we too can sing with longing

and yearning come th long expected Jesus

see even though Jesus has come now and

he has died and he has risen from the

dead and he has defeated death we remain

in a world ravaged by sin de death Decay

evil but we know that Jesus will return

one day and make all things new

so how should we behave as we live in

what we like to call the already this

not yet the waiting for the kingdom of

God to fully come in

power the the answer is easy and it's

that we should model Our Lives after the

way Jesus lived but what does that even

look like that means holding two main

things in tension for us right um we

must live looking forward to God to

Jesus Second Coming um but also remain

present in the here and now uh and live

our lives looking out for the lost and

the needy the ones who need to hear

Jesus and the ones who um are broken and

need Jesus

Grace don't we can't become like the

Pharisees who um were so convinced of

what they thought Jesus would look like

what the Messiah would look like that

they missed him right in front of them

it's really easy for us to become so

um so fixed on what we think things are

supposed to look like that we miss

what's right in front of us we we miss

the needs that are right in front of us

we miss the path that God H God has

right in front of

us we must take heart in the hope that

Jesus will one day return and make all

things right so as you sing the line

Come Thou Long expected Jesus remember

that we sing this song with the people

of Israel who waited for the Messiah for

thousands of years and with the Saints

who suffered so that the hope of the

Gospel might be revealed to many many

people as we continue to struggle

against the power of this world don't

forget to remember that Jesus

is Our Hope just as he was

theirs so this hymn is not just about uh

longing for our future hope uh as we

continue to look through the lines um

that we're going to discuss we see that

um Charles Wesley outlines um exactly

how Jesus is going to fulfill the

Prophecies of the Old Testament and what

he's going to do in his life on

Earth uh so looking back at the hymn it

says born to set thy people free from

our sins and fears release us let us

find our rest in thee the second verse

continues born thy people to deliver

born a child and yet a King born to

reign in us

forever Jesus the

Messiah did not come to set the

Israelites just free from the Pagan

reign of the of the Romans he came uh to

free them from a much more oppressive

dictator that they had no idea that they

were enslaved to and that is

Sin Sin was the true enemy of the

Israelites and remains our greatest

enemy to this day let's look back at

wrong thing there we go uh let's go back

at Luke uh Luke 2

29-32 uh and Simeon says this when he is

holding Jesus he says Lord now you are

letting your servant depart in peace

according to your word for my eyes have

seen your salvation that you have

prepared in the presence of All Peoples

a light for Revelation to the Gentiles

and for Glory to your People

Israel Simeon prophesied that this baby

will be God's salvation he will be a

light of Revelation to the Gentiles and

glory for the people of Israel Jesus is

God's true salvation his true

deliverer um and he's not setting his

people sin not from Rome but from sin I

mean he's set setting his people free

from sin not from Rome and in doing so

he becomes the Fulfillment of the law as

Jesus himself says in Matthew

5:17 uh the prophet Isaiah has much to

say about who the Messiah will be and

how he will bring about uh the salvation

of his people as we sing in this hymn

Jesus was born a child and yet a king as

Isaiah 9:6-7 is very small but on the

screen

um and it says for to us a child is born

to us a son is given and the government

shall be upon his shoulder and his name

Shall be Called wonderful counselor

Mighty God Everlasting father Prince of

Peace of the increase of his government

and of Peace there will be no end on the

throne of David and over his kingdom to

establish it and to uphold it with

Justice and with righteousness from this

time forth and forever more the Zeal of

the Lord of hosts will do this this is

Jesus that's being talked about in this

passage this is the Messianic King that

Israel has anxiously been waiting for

the thing is his Ascension to his throne

does not look like what you might

expect the establishment of his eternal

Kingdom doesn't look like what you

expect make no mistake the child born to

Mary and Joseph is in fact a king but

his path to the throne is marred by pain

and

suffering think about what Simeon says

in verses 34 and 35 to Mary and Simeon

blessed them and said to Mary his mother

behold this child is appointed for the

fall and rising of many in Israel and

for a sign that is opposed and a sword

will pierce your through your own soul

also so that thoughts from many hearts

may be

revealed he will not meet unbridled

acceptance his sign will be opposed and

the true hearts of the people will be

revealed Jesus tells us that he is the

light of the world but there's a funny

thing about light right so so often

times we think about the positive sides

of light right it lights our path

forward it can show us the the right

path to take the right way to go um but

light also exposes right so if you uh if

you have a room in your house that you

don't often use um you you open the door

you walk inside uh and it might a lot

not look so bad in the moment but then

you turn on the light and you see all

the cobwebs you see cockroaches maybe

scurrying for cover cover our hearts are

like this room

room okay our hearts are like this room

and Jesus is there to shine light on our

hearts and inside our hearts we're going

to see cobwebs and we're going to see

cockroaches and we're made aware of how

we truly

are it's not very

fun and if we don't respond in humility

and accept the fact that we are sinful

and that we are in need of God's grace

and in need of Jesus to help us clean

out that dark and forgotten

room then we're in

trouble we are going to be condemned

because we are unwilling to respond in

humility and allow Jesus to uh make us

pure make us whole make us righteous um

see because it's really easy just to

turn the light back off and walk out of

the room right it's a lot easier to do

that than to get get everything you need

out of there and clean it up but we have

to do the hard work to clean ourselves

up and to make ourselves more like

Jesus Isaiah says that Jesus will become

a stone of stumbling and a rock of

offense um jesus' ministry will not

wholeheartedly be accepted by Israel um

and his Messianic identity is going to

be openly rejected by

many yet this does not mean that Jesus

ministry is in vain or that has it has

failed uh because Jesus is not only a

king the thing that the Israelites Miss

in Jesus day is that Jesus is not only a

king but he is also a suffering

servant

oops we uh we got a little teaser of

Isaiah Isaiah 53 earlier as we as we had

our time of confession and Assurance but

I want to um read it in full here so

that we understand who Jesus is um and

what he really did and why he is worthy

of our praise and our adoration um so

Isaiah 53 starting at verse three says

he was despised and rejected by Men A

Man of Sorrows and acquainted with grief

and as one from whom men hide their

faces he was despised and we esteemed

him not surely he has borne our griefs

and carried our sorrows yet we esteemed

him stricken Smitten by God and

Afflicted but he was pierced for our

transgressions he was crushed for our

iniquities upon him was the chastisement

that brought us peace and with his

wounds we are

healed all we like sheep have gone

astray we have turned everyone to his

own way and the lord has laid upon him

the iniquity of us all out of the

anguish of his soul he shall see and be

satisfied by his knowledge shall the

righteous one my servant make many to be

accounted righteous and he shall bear

their iniquities therefore I will divide

him a portion with the many and he shall

divide the spoil with the strong because

he poured out his soul to death and was

numbered with the transgressors yet he

bore the sin of many and makes

intercession for the transgressors now

that's a long passage to just quote here

but I think it's important because it

talks about so much of what Jesus does

for us in his death of um the true

suffering that he experienced the way

that we rejected Jesus and we turned

away the way that what what Jesus death

does for us but making us righteous and

in continuing to intercede for

us the child born a king the Prince of

Peace the Son of God himself bore your

sin on his shoulders so that you might

be set free from the oppressive

oppressive power of sin he died a

perfect sacrifice so that people of all

nations may receive Grace may receive

salvation through his blood his victory

came even as he was rejected even as he

was hung on a cross his coronation came

not in front of a cheering crowd but a

mocking

one as he hung on that cross and even

now he has become an intercessor for you

he is your representative going to God

on your

behalf we receive his righteousness in

order to become children of God

so as you set up if you have a nativity

scene this Christmas as you set it up as

you gather with your family as you sing

songs celebrating the coming of the baby

in the manger remember that there would

be no reason to celebrate the manger if

it weren't for the cross in the empty

tomb they're all connected we can't have

one without the

other remember that there was only ever

One path for that tiny baby in the

manger and it ends in the excruciating

suffering that he experienced on the

cross

There's Hope in the manger but only for

those who understand the meaning of

Christ's death on the cross for those

who truly understand who Jesus was and

the gift he offers his sacrifice

remember what Simeon said in Luke 2:

34-35 that Jesus would be appointed for

the rising and falling of many in Israel

and that he would reveal the hearts of

the

people be reminded this Christmas season

that there is life in the

manger not just the life of the Messiah

in the form of a child but life for all

who put their faith in

him understand that those who reject

Jesus will be

condemned those who oppose Jesus will

receive their the just the just deserve

uh what they deserve for their

sin so I ask you today have you put your

hope in

Jesus Does He reign you forever as we're

going to sing in this song the one and

only son of God has come into the world

as a perfect sacrifice to set his people

free from the sins and fears that bind

them so

tightly have you been set free or are

you still Shackled to the oppressive

power of

sin repent of your sin recognize your

need for grace and find life in that

baby in the

manger Jesus can set us free

but this hymn is not just about waiting

on the coming Messiah or the or even

Jesus fulfillment of the Old Testament

prophecies it's also about celebrating

Christ's salvific gift of redemption and

what it means for us today so I want to

talk about one last line um in this hymn

and it is um now thy gracious Kingdom

bring so the Jews who were in the temple

with Mary and Joseph presented Jesus in

ritual um they were wa they were

patiently waiting

uh they were patiently waiting for the

Messiah to come and for him to bring his

kingdom and to uh reestablish the Throne

of David that's what they believed was

going to

happen what they missed as we've already

discussed is that the King of Kings

would first become Isaiah's suffering

servant to save all people from their

spiritual oppression when we sing this

line we too are longing for Jesus to

come and restore his kingdom on Earth

but we should not fall into the same

misunderstanding that the Jews of Jesus

they did make no mistake Jesus will one

day come in power and he will restore

creation to its rightful form well we

shouldn't simply sit here absent mindly

waiting for Jesus to come back so let's

look at the way that Simeon and Anna

celebrate in Luke 2 Simeon says that he

can die in peace now that he has seen

the Messiah he doesn't even know exactly

what Jesus is going to do but he has the

faith that this baby is God's salvation

he doesn't know how that's going to

happen but his faith makes him believe

and have peace that salvation has come

for

Israel Anna sees the baby Jesus and

immediately begins praising God um and

worshiping and telling everyone who will

listen that the Redemption is Redemption

is coming to

Israel she's living out another

Christmas Carol that we're not going to

talk about this Christmas season she's

she is going and telling it on the

mountain that Jesus Christ is born um

neither of these people will ever be

mentioned again in scripture Simeon and

Anna are only mentioned in this passage

they're not going to um live long enough

to see Jesus grow up they're not going

to live long enough to see Jesus uh

Ministry come into come into being

they're not going to live long enough to

see him go to the Cross or raise from

dead but we can say confidently after

reading this passage that their faith

will save them because they understand

who Jesus is without even knowing what

he's going to do and that faith is what

saves

them so even though they don't

understand or they understand but they

they don't know for sure what exactly is

going to happen their faith is going to

save them unlike siman Anna we have the

context for the rest of the story we

know what Jesus ministry is going to

look like we know what his death means

we know what his that he's going to

raise from the dead after 3

days how much more should we celebrate

knowing what Jesus has done for us so

this Christmas season don't allow

yourself to be distracted by the worldly

materialism that has hijacked this

holiday um the focus should not be on

the gifts but on on the single greatest

gift that's ever been given in the baby

in the

manger and through him the gift of life

through his death follow the model of

Anna and make sure that every person in

your life knows about the truth of to

the true reason for this holiday the

true reason of Christmas that the

Messiah has come so when we sing this

hymn together in just a few moments I

hope they you you have a new

understanding uh of the longing of the

Israelites for the Messiah and the long

long of the Saints for Jesus to come

again as you sing the words Come Thou

Long expected Jesus I hope you feel the

weight of waiting for Jesus to come and

make all things new as we struggle in

this world still ruled by sin it is good

for us to long for a restored

creation and on that day when we are

once again fully United with God uh I

hope you have a renewed understanding of

who um the baby and the manger is who

the king in the manger is who the child

born a king

is and I hope that you remember the

connection between that baby and the

cross finally I hope that you find your

rest in him by allowing the king and the

manre to reign in your heart forever

don't forget to remember that while

while we may not experience the fullness

of God's kingdom here on Earth there

will be a day when Jesus will come and

make all things

new and remember that we have been set

free from the oppressive power of sin by

the blood of Jesus um so even on days

that you forget what is true don't

forget to remember that God won't forget

you let's

pray father God thank you for the gift

of your son Jesus thank you that he

humbled himself by taking on flesh and

coming to us as a baby and a

Manger We Praise You for Your Perfect

Plan of Salvation through his life death

Resurrection Lord we long for a day when

he will return and make all things new

Lord give us the strength to wait until

that day comes and give us the

opportunity to share the good news of

his salvation to others in our lives

Lord as we

celebrate this Christmas season let us

not forget that the true reason for this

season is the king in the manger come

quickly Lord Jesus let your kingdom

kingdom come quickly
