These

are the generations of Jacob. Joseph,

being 17 years old, was pastoring the

flock with his brothers. He was a boy

with the sons of Bilha and Zilpa, his

father's wives. And Joseph brought a bad

report of them to their father. Now,

Israel loved Joseph more than his other

sons, because he was the son of his old

age, and he had made him a robe of many

colors. But when his brothers saw that

their father loved him more than all his

brothers, they hated him and could not

speak peacefully to him. Now Joseph had

a dream. And when he told it to his

brothers, they hated him even more. He

said to them, "Hear this dream that I

have dreamed. Behold, we were binding

sheav in the field, and behold, my sheep

arose and stood upright, and behold,

your sheav gathered around it and bowed

down to my sheep." His brothers said to

him, "Are you indeed to reign over us?

Or are you indeed to rule over us?" So

they hated him even more for his dreams

and for his words. And then he dreamed

another dream and told it to his

brothers and said, "Behold, I have

dreamed another dream. Behold, the sun,

the moon, and the 11 stars were bowing

down to me." But when it was told to his

father and to his brothers, his father

rebuked him and said to him, "What is

this dream that you have dreamed? Shall

I and your mother and your brothers

indeed come to bow ourselves to the

ground before you?" And his brothers

were jealous of him, but his father kept

the saying in mind.

Chapter 40 23.

Yet the chief cupbearer did not remember

Joseph but forgot him.

And now chapter 50 12-20.

Thus his sons did for him as he had

commanded him. for his sons carried him

to the land of Canaan and buried him in

the cave of the field of Makfella to the

east of Mamray where Abraham bought as

the field for Ephron of the Hitittite to

possess as his burying place. After he

had buried his father, Joseph returned

to Egypt with his brothers and all who

had gone up after him to bury his

father. When Joseph's brothers saw that

their father was dead, they said, "It

may be that Joseph will hate us and pay

us back for all the evil that we did to

him." So they sent a message to Joseph

saying, "Your father gave this command

before he died. Say to Joseph, please

forgive the transgression of your

brothers and their sin because they did

evil to you." And now please forgive the

transgression of the servants of God

your father."

Joseph wept when they spoke to him. His

brothers also came and fell down before

him and said, "Behold, we are your

servants." But Joseph said to them, "Do

not fear, for am I in the place of God.

As for you, you meant evil against me,

but God meant it for good, to bring it

about that many people should be kept

alive as they are today."

>> This is God's word.

>> Thanks be to God. Let's pray.

Lord, we just sang, Lord, I need you

every hour. And so we do need you right

now. That you would help us hear your

word. That you would work on our hearts.

That we would behold your glory. And as

we behold your glory, would we be

conformed more to your image, Christ,

and that the spirit would live inside

us. And that we would come alive to the

wonder and the beauty of the gospel. We

thank you for your word. Now be with us

as we listen to it as your people in

Christ's name. Amen.

Let me begin with a question. What

positions

do you have in this world? Are you a a

boss or a CEO?

Are you a a father or a mother? Maybe

maybe you're a an older brother or an

older sister. Uh maybe you hold a a

public office. Maybe you hold an office

in the government or maybe it's uh an an

office in your flat.

Uh are you a leader in an organization,

a teacher, an instructor, a pastor, an

expert in your field?

All of us have different positions in

the world and some of those positions

have been uh given to us because of

maybe some achievements that we have

done and some of those have have been

given to us because nothing that we have

done. But every position that you have

comes with authority. It comes with a

responsibility.

Every position comes with power.

relative power, not absolute power or

godlike power. You have you have

relative power over your employees that

are under you. You have relative power

over the your students or your children

that are under you.

Now, power uh many of us really don't

like to talk about power in the position

that you have. We all we all know that

we have it, right? But it's hard to talk

about power.

We know the poison that power can be. We

know people in positions

above us to be so destructive

with the power that they have.

Maybe we just think or we just close our

eyes. Just close our eyes and it will

just kind of go away. this this problem

of power. But you know it doesn't and in

fact sometimes it gets worse. Now on the

other hand there are actually some that

just all they do is talk about power.

They see every action as a push to

power. Every position every action as

coercion of others.

And where there might be right is that

yeah there's a lot of power and a lot of

that power is being misused. But see,

they lack something.

They lack the story that it wasn't so in

the beginning.

You see, in the ancient garden, when you

look at the story of of Genesis, God

gives tremendous

power to Adam and Eve. Remember that he

says, "You are you are in my image and I

have given you dominion." in this power

over everything over all of creation to

be God's steward. So God commissioned

Adam and Eve with the highest position

of I mean in creation and it was to

cultivate it was to create. It was to

flourish.

Now that's the reason for power and

position. It's for flourishing. It's for

it's for cultivating not coercion.

But

now there's a dark shadow over power

because because in the story Adam and

Eve took the poison and they grasp for

power.

They foolishly chose to be like God or

creator and power has been misused and

abused ever since.

So when we come to the subject power,

it's no wonder that we are a little bit

hesitant maybe uh or that we really

don't want to talk about it or even

really desiring to have power ourselves.

History records in every culture in

every kingdom a story of a people in

positions who have misused and abused

their positions

either by too much or by too little. But

here's the thing is that that does not

erase that God has in his design made us

in our image his image and that we are

commissioned to have dominion over all.

We all have positions that we can

influence others.

So back to you. How do you see your

position?

How do you see power? Is it a necessary

evil? Is it something that you're really

grasping for?

Is it something you want to run away at

all cost? Or do you maybe see it as a

good a gift from God? Well, now that

comes to the story of Joseph. And this

is one of the greatest stories in the

Bible. It's because one of the things is

one of the longest stories. It's from

Genesis 37-50.

So we get to see Joseph not as just a

onedimensional flat character but you

see him develop over time. He's dynamic.

He gets to grow. And today we are going

to trace the arc of Joseph and and his

multiple positions. And what we'll see

is

we'll see how Joseph begins to live for

himself and then his falls and rises. uh

and then eventually Joseph will see him

in a position where he is helping and

flourishing others. So let's go to the

text Genesis 37. If you have your

Bibles, keep them open there. Genesis

37. So what position is Joseph in?

Joseph it you you actually see it's a

juxosition because on the one hand you

look at verse two and in verse two you

see that he is just called a boy. He is

just called he is one of actually in the

lowest position in his family business.

Okay, he's uh what it means when it says

that he was just a boy that means he was

an understudy. He was a servant uh a

mere helper to his brothers. So he is

again he is in the lowest position in

the family business. But yet on the

other hand you read verse three and it

says now Israel and that's Jacob. Jacob

loved Joseph more than his other sons.

Now, uh, raise your hands if you have

siblings. Is anyone I have a I have a

brotherh and a sister. Um, if if if you

have a if your parents have a favorite,

you think that goes well?

>> No, it this is not going to go well. And

and so Joseph here is in the favored

position by his father.

Joseph even has this lavished uh

multicolored robe.

Now back then who wore multicolored

garments.

It was only the kings and the queens.

And so what so what Jacob is saying to

to Joseph is you should be treated like

a king in the family. Again, not going

to go very well. you you begin to see

that this is a very dysfunctional family

and there are sins coming from multiple

directions. So, Jacob's favoritism

entices Joseph's pride and arrogance and

and and Joseph grabs this grabs this

favored position and he uses it for

himself. Look at verse two. Look at

verse two. says that Joseph brought a

bad report of them to their father. Now,

what's happening here? It's it's

actually more than just tattletelling on

his brothers. What Joseph is actually

doing when he brings a bad report, he's

actually it means and he it's it's it's

a it's an evil report, a slanderous

report. See, he thinks that because he's

in the favored position that he can use

that to

live for himself. So, and he can

manipulate his father to get more power.

So, we have established again that

Joseph's in the favored position. And

so, and rather than in this position

being constructive and seeking to bring

family unity, he's bringing destruction

with his power and his position. And

it's it's driving a wedge

between him and his brothers. And that's

how the narrative plays out, right?

Joseph dresses in this robe of many

colors. And his brothers, well, they see

it and they hate it and they hate him

for it. And then uh

uh they you know they they could have

group relationships but

this is a massive relational

break. See Joseph again is in the lowest

position in the family. He's in the

lowest position family but he's in the

upper position of this family because of

his father. And so when Joseph is

walking around

in the dreams, he's being very

insensitive. He's being very

insensitive. And this is true for people

that are in power in high positions

seeking power.

They can be very insensitive. They can

be very insensitive to the actual

relationships.

Now today we call this relational

dynamics or maybe call relational EQ or

emotional EQ. It's like if you have a

boss and if you have a if you have a

boss and they have authority see yeah

that position comes with authority.

They're a boss. It's been given to you

by the company. But if that boss if if

you are the boss and you have that

position and you're seeking power from

it then what you have is you have

positional authority but you do not have

influential authority. What do I mean by

that? It means that you often lack

relational connection

between the people that are under you

because you you rely everything on your

positional authority. And this is what

Joseph's doing right here. So you have

to shed some of the layers in your

heart. You have to get why why are you

in this position? Is it really for

seeking power to seeking maybe a name

for yourself?

If it is power then it usually means

that you're in a position and what

you're doing is you're using people for

your own glory and your own adv

advancement.

If you seek power, then only people

people are only good

to you as far as they can lift you up

higher in a higher position or a higher

status.

Now, a side note, you might be thinking,

what's the difference between power and

control? At least that's what I thought

when I was thinking of this. See control

um the idol of control focuses on really

managing what you have and controlling

what you have. But power

lust after growth towards dominance over

others.

And so this that's really what's going

on in in the dreams here. See what's the

essence of the dreams? What's what did

the dreams reveal? It's not hard. Look

at verse eight. His brothers knew

exactly what was going on. You don't

need a special interpreter to have to

understand these dreams. They say, "Are

you indeed to reign over us? Are you

indeed to rule over us?" And then

there's a second round of dreams and

even then his father rebukes him.

He he he says, "You're taking your favor

position even too far. It's gone to your

head. His father's not even happy with

this. See, Joseph knows his relationship

with his brothers is greatly strained

and he feels it. He feels it. And he

knows his brother has hatred toward him.

But does he care?

Well, it's a sign that it's a sign that

someone who is lusting for power, he's

very insensitive. He's rubbing these

dreams in their noses.

I mean, think about it. He tells them

one dream and they get pretty upset.

Then he goes and tells them another

dream. And he he rubs his favored

position because Joseph at this point is

only living for himself.

He's living for himself. He'll take all

the power that he can get. People with a

love of power and position don't care

about the relationships and about the

emotions and about the other in the

relationship and how they're doing. See,

this is this is contra to what a good

leader is. Think of first Peter 5 when

the Apostle Peter talks about elders in

a church.

What's the qualification? One of the

things is to not be overbearing.

A good way to understand being

overbearing is well, have you ever

tightened a bolt on a car or maybe

you're a a screw and and on a house

project? See, you know, there there's a

balance between being too firm and being

overbearing with the bolt because you

can go and you can tighten it with with

firmness but gentleness and then it can

lock in, right? But if you if you go all

power, then you'll strip the threads

and you will strip the the bearings on

it. And see, that's what Joseph's doing

right here. He is going all power and

he's stripping down the whole

relationship with his brothers.

Now what his brothers do? That's evil.

It's evil. Their response is actually

even more destructive than what Joseph

was. As I said, there's sins coming from

all angles here. But what we see in

Joseph's life is that he is in a favored

position and he's only living for

himself.

How about you?

What positions do you have?

[snorts]

You have to do some heart questions

here. You have to do some diagnosis of

why are you in that position? Are you

living

for yourself in that position?

Are you using the power for yourself in

that position?

Now a good indicator and it's it's scary

to really to know is to look to your

Now don't ask yourself ask the people

around you and then be willing to listen

about the health of your relationship.

Now this is for all of us but I think I

have scriptural warrant to admonish the

younger people here. See, Joseph was

only 17.

Boy, I remember when I was 17.

I wish I would have stopped and listened

and and and sought to understand others

because I see a lot of myself here when

I was 17 or 27 or sometimes even 37.

Now, now for those who are younger,

they're so often they're so desiring a

quick success

and under lying that is a drive for

living for yourself.

And the scriptures talk about youthful

pride.

So all I'm saying that if you're

younger, pay attention to your heart.

Give permission for others to speak into

your life, especially in a community

like this.

It might save you from a lot of

heartache.

See, Joseph receives these two dreams

when he's 17. Now, what he doesn't see

is the pathway which God as his good

shepherd leads him to fulfill those

dreams.

God's path and method is to melt

Joseph's heart

to shed the callous skin of pride and

living for himself. See, this is the

middle section of Joseph's life. And

what we'll see is through some some

extraordinary rises and falls, the good

shepherd is molding Joseph before he

gets to live out his dream.

So as the story continues

between Genesis 37 and 41

uh Joseph will fall three more times

further down and then he will rise three

more times eventually to the position of

prime minister and it's an expand of

about 13 years of his life. Now, as a

preacher, I would love to preach for

that whole all those chapters, but you

would be here for 13 years. So, I don't

want you to do that. So, we're going to

do a quick chart here and just look at

the chart. And this is this is basically

a helpful chart to understand Joseph's

life. So after the dreams, his Joseph

had had enough with him and with evil

intentions sold Joseph into slavery.

And they put him and his dreams on a

caravan down to Egypt to be sold into

slavery.

But then

Joseph was bought

by a man named Potterer.

And this is his first fall. But then the

Lord was with him. Actually, we'll just

switch over to this next slide because

it does indicate some the Lord was with

him.

And Joseph rises to the household

manager, but then he gets attention to

from Pottersford's wife. And so she uses

her powerful position to pursue him in

an intimate relationship.

And while Joseph ran away from

potterer's wife

then and the openation

uh temptation and and invitation that he

could have easily had potterer wife

accused him.

So his master sent him into prison but

the Lord was with him. The Lord's

steadfast love was with him. And so he

rises after he falls a second time. And

then in so in prison he he rises to a

manager of the prison. And as a manager

he makes two amazing network connections

with the chief cup bearer

and of the chief baker. And these are

two very influential people. And through

these connections, he has this amazing

opportunity to interpret two dreams.

Joseph interprets these two dreams. And

he sees it as a way out of this downward

spiral.

Maybe he was thinking, "Now I can live

out my dreams." He even says before the

chief cup bearer returns to position, he

tells him, "All I ask you to do is

remember me. Remember me." And now we

come to our text.

Where do we find Joseph? Well, this is

his lowest moment.

He's in the prison cell and he's

forgotten. Look at our text. Genesis

40:23.

It says, "Yet the chief cup bearer did

not remember Joseph,

but forgot him."

And we know how long he forgotten too

because the next verse says after two

whole years

two years forgotten after he had been

imprisoned after he had been falsely

accused. After he'd been ston sold into

slavery by his brothers.

Now we can't know everything what's

going on in Joseph's heart. the

hiddenenness of God, the silence of

prayers, the dark night of the soul,

all of this can break a man.

But maybe that was the point that God

was doing.

How do you break a man's pride?

God only knows.

We don't have Joseph's journals, but

what we do see in the man that Joseph is

becoming

through these trials and sufferings.

One way I think that the Lord is is

working on Joseph is teaching him where

real power comes from.

From his experience in these middle

years, he's placed uh in these

positions. They have very little power.

Uh they're very controlled powers

because he's a slave. A slave has no

power. He's in prison. People in prison

don't have any power. And so even he's

in these middle management positions

that he had. He quickly learned that in

the snap of the fingers, they can be

taken away. The position, the power

gone.

but God working on him in his forgotten

stake.

See, I I don't know all the details, but

what we do see in the story is that

Joseph's perspective is being

transformed to realize that he is living

under God's sovereignty and power and

rule.

What do I mean by this?

You see a massive shift in Joseph's last

rise. So again, two years forgotten and

then one day Pharaoh has a dream.

None of his wise men can figure out the

dream. So guess who remembers? Who can

interpret dreams? The cup bearer

remembers. And now Joseph is out of the

pit. And Joseph stands in front of the

most powerful man

on earth at that time.

And Pharaoh request Joseph, Joseph, this

nobody, this Hebrew, this outsider

to interpret the dream.

And as as the reader, we're asking, has

Joseph changed? What's what's going to

go on here? And what he says is

shocking.

It's strong. It's almost a rebuke to the

most powerful man on earth. Genesis

41:16, we didn't read, but basically

what it says is not me.

Not me. Don't look at me. I don't have

any power. All the power to give and

interpret dreams, all of it comes from

God. Belongs to God. So Pharaoh, if so,

Pharaoh, if you are going to have an

interpretation of your dream, God will

give it to you. God will decide that

you're under God.

This is a massive shift in Joseph's

mind. Because look,

Genesis 37, look at Genesis 37. You know

what you don't see in his younger years?

What is absent?

God.

God is absent. There's no mention of

Until

Joseph begins to fall and the text says,

"And the Lord was with him

until he's thrown into slavery." Then

God is mentioned

and not even by Joseph, by the narrator.

It's so often in your falls, in your

losing, in your dying that the present

of the the presence of the Lord is felt.

Often it takes the fall, it takes the

losing, it takes the dying

that you know the presence of the Lord

and his steadfast love is working on

you.

The Lord always works on you to say

wherever you're at, he's worked on you

to say not me but God.

Grace, this is what grace is. Grace is

the beginning of God's work where you

begin to see where the real power is.

And it's a gift of God. And when you

know

power is a gift, then you begin to love

and to use it for good and for

flourishing and for cultivating.

See, Joseph's route to h through

humility is God's work in reforming him

and his understanding of power.

You need to see that God particularly

works on Joseph like this because he

also particularly works on you

because he particularly loves you.

He might be particularly working on you

like he's working on Joseph and

reforming your understanding of power or

maybe it's something else but he's

working particularly on you in your

rises and falls.

But today we have Joseph in front of us.

And so maybe you're a lot like Joseph

and God is really working on you by his

word right now to really calibrate and

to reform your understanding of power.

See, here's the key that you have to

see. The opposite of humility is not

power, but pride.

Both humility and pride have power. But

pride, as we saw in the beginning of

Joseph's life, is all about using it for

yourself.

God brings these falls, these

sufferings, these struggles into

Joseph's teaching

to teach him humility so that Joseph's

understanding of inhumility now

he can use his power

for the flourishing of others. And

that's what we get to see in the last

section of our I mean our last section

in Genesis 50. So we've come to the end

of Joseph's life.

We come to the end of Joseph's life and

now he's prime minister. His dream has

been realized and through his

interpretation of Pharaoh's dream and

the wisdom of the Phantom, now Egypt

controls all the food in all the lands.

And Joseph's family is now in the land

of Canaan and they're starving. They're

starving. And so they come down and what

they what do they do? They bow down.

They bow down to Joseph. to which we

come to the climax of the story because

Joseph

does now have the power to destroy them.

The and the one thing that could control

his power, Joseph's power is his father.

But what does the text say? It says that

now he's no more. And so his brothers

are scared. And the question that looms

in everyone's mind, what will Joseph do?

How will he use this position

of power?

Let's just re listen to Genesis

50:19-20.

It says this, "But Joseph said to them,

do not fear, for in for am I in the

place of God.

As for you, you meant it. You meant evil

against me, but God meant it for good to

bring about

many people to keep their lives as they

are today. So do not fear. I will

provide for you and your little ones.

Thus he comforted them and spoke kindly

to them.

Do you know it's saying here? Do you see

again this total flip in Joseph? Younger

Joseph grasping for power, for family

power. Now he has all the power over his

family and he willingly lowers himself

to serve the family.

So now he has this power to do something

truly incredible.

And now he has this power to really

bring the family, bring unity, to mend

the relationships where he once was

insensitive.

He has the power to do this.

See, one way you can use power is to

hold a grudge and to never forgive.

You see, Joseph brother brothers, they

come to him and they say, "Please

forgive us." And Joseph says, "I forgive

you." He forgives him. He says, "Am I in

the place of God?"

Now, this has some scary implications.

You know why? bec because when you hold

grudges

and don't forgive people, that's what

you're trying to do. You're trying to

sit in the place of God.

But Joseph now in humility over learned

in those middle years, he knows he's not

in the place of God. And Joseph

now, he doesn't excuse his brother's

actions. He says, "You meant this for

evil." Those actions were evil. But in

those very actions, God by his power is

using this for good purposes to save our

family. He's getting this understanding

of how a humble power.

Humble power wishes.

Whether you're a father or or a farmer

or a king or a manager or an influence,

whatever your humble real power seeks to

bring flourishing to others to provide

for others and their little ones.

That's what we learn that Joseph got

that Joseph became.

Now the question is how how do we get

it?

Joseph,

Joseph in his humble um growing in his

humble begins to not look to himself.

See, you have to realize that you don't

have the power.

Joseph rightly confesses that he was not

in the place of God. And you and I

regularly need to confess, I am not God.

I am not God. Every morning I am not

God. I am not God. Every evening I am

not God. We need to find that so sweet.

I am not God. Learn that you are not God

or sit in the place of God.

That's the first step. But then where

where is the power come from? Well,

where does Joseph look? He's not God,

but he looks to God. He flees to God. If

you're in sexual temptation, flee to

God. If you're accused in injustice,

flee to God. If you're in a really bad

position, a prison or whatnot, flee to

God. Or if you're the prime minister in

the highest positions, flee to God. Go

to God. Go to Jesus.

We can have power because Jesus gave up

his position and gave us the spirit.

look to Jesus. Our confession assurance

was from Philippians Philippians 2. And

in Philippians 2, it says, "The eternal

son of God had the position of God, but

he did not grasp it." He did not grasp

the power for himself, but he willingly

took on flesh and became a slave, even

dying on a cross. And on the cross,

Jesus cried out to God, why have you

forgotten me? Why have you forgotten me?

Jesus,

he is the ultimate Joseph. Jesus is the

ultimate example of people meaning it

for evil, but God bringing extreme good

out of it.

Jesus says,

"Here's a good I died for you. I was in

the place of God, but I didn't use that

for myself. I became a servant.

I became poor

and was abused under evil power. I

became killed for you."

See the cross the ultimate example of

God bring is bringing good out of evil.

See getting that going to the cross that

will make you more humble than Joseph

ever was because you begin to see how

bad you really are. But on the other

hand, it will make you more powerful

than Joseph was because now you have a

real humble

heart full of power from Jesus. You have

his spirit. So take some time today um

to pray and to see how in faith how or

who or where

you can bring flourishing to people in

the positions that you are near and far

to bring about the glory of God. Let's

pray.

Thank you Lord that you are good and

that you did um come and that you did

not count equality with God something to

be grasped but you made yourself a

servant. We thank you Lord for your

grace. Lord it's a gift and we pray Lord

that we would receive that gift that we

would continue to to know that gift.

Lord, if anyone in here is does not know

the power of the gospel which is unto

salvation that Jesus came, lived, died,

rose for them, would they come today and

to to come to say, "I am not God, but I

want to flee to God." And there are many

of of us too that um that do follow you.

And yet that poison still is there of of

not wanting to fully repent. Well, may

the table of the Lord today be a place

where we come in weakness, but we come

strengthened by his spirit as we taste

the elements today of the of the

communion in Christ's name. Amen.

","":"
["GET
