so my family just got back from whin

on Wednesday night uh about once a year

we take a kind of a big vacation like a

week long

vacation and we love huan because it's

quiet and the beaches especially like

South huan are nice and there's nobody

there sometimes and yeah we love it we

just love there um and we were there and

we were at this little restaurant and it

was on the beach it was beautiful um the

food was amazing it was perfect um and

we were just sitting there watching this

amazing you know the the ocean and the

sun's going down and so the colors are

just right and and everything's

everything's perfect you know and um

we're talking about because vacation is

like where we read books together and so

we're reading books to our kids and

hanging out and so we're talking about

all these books we're reading and we're

just having a great time it's one of

those like those those Hallmark family

moments you know where you're like this

is this should be a this is a lifetime

movie if you know what lifetime is um

and then I look over at a table next to

me and it's like it's a family with two

older kids and it's you know the mom and

the dad and two a brother and a sister

and they're all on their screens you you

see you see the flickering there and

their food is sitting there and it's

like it's getting cold and I'm thinking

I could probably get some of their food

they wouldn't notice um and my first

thought all right this is this is

confession of sin okay um was what a

waste what jerks they are they're just

sitting there on their phones and you

know just wasting this amazing view and

their food's getting cold and then my

second thought okay was much more humble

and much more true was like oh wait wait

wait that's us too like we do that as

well we're just like that even if it's

not right this minute and and I just it

made me think there are times when we

just

miss we miss the present we miss what's

important animportant because we're on

our phones or because our minds are

somewhere else I'm thinking about work

whatever and it struck me and the

passage we're talking about today is

just this it's not hard it's not

complicated it's we're so easily

distracted from important things from

Ultimate things and so today we're going

to look at Jesus call to all his

disciples to fix our hearts upon

him above all other things in our lives

to fix our hearts upon him and so we're

going to we're going to do this by

looking at three things one the

disciples

posture two the disciples distraction

and three the disciples portion so I'm

going to read the passage and then we're

g to then we'll pray but it's short and

I'll read in

English so if you will and you can just

keep this in your hands if you have a

Bible or or open your phone uh don't get

distracted though look at Point number

two this is God's

word now as they went on their way Jesus

entered a village and a woman named

Martha welcomed him into her house and

she had a sister called Mary who sat at

the Lord's feet and listen to his

teaching but Martha was distracted with

much serving and she went up to him and

said

Lord do you not care that my sister has

left me to serve alone tell her then to

help me but the Lord answered her Martha

Martha you're anxious and troubled about

many things but one thing is necessary

Mary has chosen the good portion and it

will not be taken away from her let's

pray

father we have prayed and sung and read

from your word this morning that

you you are the one who is worthy to

gaze upon in your

temple it should be our highest prayer

that we would gaze upon the beauty of

the Lord in your

temple but we know that we fill our

lives and our hearts and our minds with

broken sisters things that cannot

satisfy

us Lord we pray pray that you would

challenge us through the example of Mary

in this particular

instance um ongoing example of Martha in

this particular instance and from the

Eternal ongoing constant call to amen

you and we ask all this in your name

amen so we're going to start with the

disciples posture the disciples posture

so I don't know if you know this I'm was

actually a Spanish teacher for about 5

years after I graduated from

University um and in in my time as a

teacher I taught everything from sixth

graders to seniors in high school uh

don't ask me to speak in Spanish Pono

this is 20 years ago many years ago I

cannot teach anyone now um I can

actually I can teach you the bad

words but most and most of my time

teaching I I mean I loved it I really L

teaching was you know the process of

helping students to learn and to grow

and to grasp new Concepts and to be

interested in other cultures which I

think is a lot of Education really

really is you know when you're teaching

language to speak the Spanish language

some it wasn't only it wasn't just

fulfilling for me but it was fun it was

like a it was one of the most fun times

in my life but if you've ever been a

teacher uh or a pastor or anyone in

charge of having anyone learn anything

you'll know that no matter how well you

teach no matter how well you prepare no

matter what you do no matter how much

you love your subject you cannot make

everyone learn you cannot make everyone

grow so in each of my classes every time

I taught a class every day every time

and it was always different people you'd

always have people who would come in

ready like they were excited and ready

to learn and whatever they just wanted

to be there they even you know these

little redneck kids in South Carolina

wanted to speak Spanish crazy and you

also had every day all the time people

who were just disinterested they had a

posture of disinterest a posture of even

hostility towards me even towards the

subject matter towards just being in

school see the reality is that no matter

how much I want to teach something no

matter how much I want to impart

knowledge to

someone if the learner doesn't want the

knowledge if the learner doesn't want to

learn I can't do anything can't do

anything our posture or the way that we

approach or yeah the way we approach

anything in life largely dictates how we

experience that

thing and so this principle actually

holds true in pretty much every area of

life you know um in every job you have

in every occupation and and as

especially in our walk with Jesus in our

faith when we come to this passage today

Jesus I mean it's kind of like a flyby

you know Jesus is just stopping through

he's come to the house of one of his

dear friends or two of his dear friends

Mary and Martha this may be the same one

in John that we meet in John 11 that

they had uh the brother Lazarus that

Jesus raised from the dead we don't Luke

doesn't tell us this and In this passage

we see two different postures In this

passage two different postures towards

Jesus Jesus himself and and and to his

teaching and he points us Jesus points

us to the importance of our posture

towards himself and towards his kingdom

so in verse

39 we

read about

Mary and she had a sister called Mary

this is Martha had a sister called Mary

who sat at the Lord's feet and listened

listen to his

teaching he she she sat at the Lord's

feet and listened to his what so what is

that communica it's it's not hard it's

re there's no you don't have to go to

the Greek here it's really

easy it's it's it's the language of love

of devotion of I am here for you like

aanti sits at the feet of PB daily or

should but it's that it's devotion it's

I am committed to soaking up your

presence it's a physical posture that

that reflects love and respect and

reverence and humility it says you are

my

authority and it says that Mary is just

there to listen to learn to grow to hear

whatever the rabbi the teacher has to

say to her but Luke's also given us a

clear

contrast to Mary's posture of adoration

so In this passage we mainly see Martha

and we we we you know the the we don't

even really talk to Mary here we just we

just see what she's doing from a

distance almost but we talk about or M

Martha talks Martha is the one who we

kind of focus on the most

and now we're going to talk more about

Martha's distractedness in a minute but

I want to focus right now on her posture

towards the Lord towards Christ so in

verse 40 we read but Martha was

distracted with much serving and she

went up to him and said Lord do you not

care that my sister has left me to serve

alone tell her then to help me so think

about what's Happening

Here Martha a woman is going to the

rabbi she just rebuked the creator of

the universe and then she gave him an

order she's communicating to her Creator

Savior and King now she doesn't know all

that quite yet her her knowledge of

these things but this is someone

important this isn't just anybody this

is Jesus the rabbi her

friend she's communicating that her

plans her agenda her vision for how this

Gathering goes even her idea of what's

good and proper for a follow of Jesus is

what matters her posture towards Jesus

is almost one of a scolding teacher you

ever had a scolding teacher you know

teacher who's just there to scold you

you know some teachers are nice and kind

I think I was one of those I don't know

but some teachers are just they're just

kind of mean and that's kind of the way

she comes across she wants to be the

teacher the one who corrects the one who

scolds

here what is our posture before

Jesus how do you and I sit under God's

word because this this is how we sit at

the feet of the J of Jesus these days by

the way just just so you know you know

this

but how do you and I how do we approach

Jesus I mean these are basic diagnostic

questions for the health of our souls

really it it tells us it tells us about

our relationship with him and are we

growing in Christ and so Believers what

is our posture before Jesus are you

sitting at the feet of of Jesus

listening to his word are you sitting

under the word or do you come to it as

as the

teacher now some of us have the role of

teacher that's okay but we still have to

sit under

it are you bowing before the teacher in

reverence and humility and submission

and

adoration or are you setting the agenda

for Jesus and his church are you telling

him what he's supposed to be like what

he's supposed to act like what he's

supposed to do like Martha

are you picking and

choosing what of the which part of the

teacher's uh uh words you're going to

you're going to

accept do you knowingly or unknowingly

come to Jesus to his word to his church

to his people as a shopper as someone

who's just shopping around I'll take a

little bit of this and a little bit of

that the posture of a disciple should be

one of reverence one of adoration one of

I am ready to listen and that's the

posture we see in Mary today now she

she's there are no Marys in the Bible by

the way who are sinless just so you know

that as we seek though to be Disciples

of Jesus may we approach him with a

posture of reverence and of adoration

ready to sit at his feet and learn

that's what Sunday's about by the

way

two the disciples

distraction so I don't want to be too

hard on Martha here um because I suspect

that her posture towards the Lord in

this situation is actually pretty common

among the people in this room I know

it's I know it is in my own life I want

to suggest that but I do want to suggest

that

her lack of right posture towards

Jesus towards his presence towards his

teaching um probably flows directly from

her distractedness so two times in this

passage that's important two times here

in this very short passage we hear that

Martha is distracted and anxious and

troubled verse 40 and 41 but Martha was

went up to him and she said

Martha you are anxious and troubled

about many things so Luke really wants

us to know that Martha is distracted and

anxious and busy and again let's not be

too hard on Martha I I mean I can't be

um so I'm going to confess a little more

sin here to you um so about every four

to six weeks at our new Church

Plant um we throw this big neighborhood

party you know and it's huge like we

have La last time and during Christmas

we cooked a pig like a whole pig um

we'll do these big barbecues and we just

invite everyone and the goal of these

parties is just to have fun to in like

to engage our neighbors to get to know

all of our neighbors and um and and to

share a meal together and to talk and to

give our members of Grace Fellowship

just an opportunity an organic way to

have fun with to talk with their

neighbors um with people who aren't

believers

and these are these are really fun

parties um I mean they're really fun um

every single time we host one of these

and we've done it like six or seven

times in a row now you'll see tons of

Thai kids and farang kids jumping on the

trampoline and running around and

laughing and getting bloody NOS just all

these kind of things it's just it's

amazing and then you'll see these thae

ladies and the occasional farang sitting

in the kitchen making some and laughing

and they're probably laughing at the

Fang you know and um and you'll see

students and Baristas and missionaries

and families and moping vendors and

stock Traders and all these

people standing around eating together

and talking and just just getting to

know each other um and it's it's it's

really amazing and as a church ministry

team we've really enjoyed these times

we're seeing that they are very special

times and we're seeing actually we're

seeing people want to know more about

about Jesus because of these times in

fact we're actually seeing people come

to know Jesus through these times we

just baptized a young lady who who uh

she came to these parties that's how she

came to Faith was being around the body

of

Christ and that was the design by the

way that was the design for these

parties we wanted to have this so that

we can build relationships so that we

can talk to them so that we can show

them graciousness and hospitality so let

me tell you about Martha real quick all

right many of you also know that I love

to cook you know I I mean I love cooking

um actually grew up in a family of cooks

Great Cooks like not just decent Cooks

but Great Cooks and we would cook these

big meals and our our family even even

though they weren't Believers we're all

about hospitality and fish fries and

Whole Hog roast all you just crazy

amount of food and um obviously you know

I like food uh and then I worked in a

restaurant for a long time and

throughout College I was I was working

in restaurants and and even after

college I worked in restaurants and

taught Spanish and ever since I've been

able to cook I've Loved inviting people

over for for meals to show them love and

to show them Hospitality I just just

love

it but just a few months ago as we were

doing one of these parties and I was

cooking all the food you know um because

I don't know how to delegate very well

and these parties that were by the way

for the purpose of welcoming people so

nothing's going right the food that I

needed to find I couldn't find it the

ingredients I needed to find I couldn't

find it the charcoal that I was using in

the grill wasn't working right the

propane ran out everything was going

wrong the food wasn't cooking fast

enough everybody was hungry my kids

diapers needed change all that kind of

stuff and as all of this was happening I

didn't want to talk to anyone like I

didn't want to welcome newcomers I

didn't and I'm sure that everyone around

me could could see that very clearly

because unlike Thai people fangs cannot

hold like can't we can't hide anything

you know Thai people are they'll hit hit

you with their car and smile about it

farangs cannot hide emotions you

know and I'm I'm I'm seething I am

stressed I am completely anxious and

stressed

out I am

Martha I'm Ian I can identify with

Martha this story hits me hard because

this is who I am I'm here I'm the leader

of these parties throwing these parties

to welcome people to Jesus and none of

them want to talk to me because I will

bite their heads

off but this is the point this is who we

are we are all Martha we are all

struggling with busyness in our

day-to-day lives we're struggling with

anxiety and stress we're feeling the

pressure of work and of school and

raising our kids of our country's

politics

of personal finances whatever whatever

is stressing you out whatever is making

you busy and anxious and

distracted and so and by the way I just

want to be very clear here Martha is not

doing bad things Martha isn't doing

anything wrong here I mean she's she's

she's not struggling with anything bad

she's actually doing what's expected of

every single woman in her day at this

time she's being a great host she is

probably doing a wonderful job of

Hosting this party so is Jesus just

picking on Martha here no he's picking

on you and I he's picking on all of us

Jesus gets to the

heart of the matter for Martha and for

us for all who would be his disciples

he's speaking to her heart to her to the

idols that keep her from being with him

so remember there's two times in this

passage that Martha that Luke tells us

Martha is anxious and distracted and as

Martha comes to Jesus kind of in a huff

probably feeling

self-righteous about how hard she's

working and how lazy her sister is and

how inappropriate it is that she's

sitting with the rabbi with the men and

then she's saying get on to my sister

you tell her to come and help me Jesus

gently yet firmly says Martha Martha you

were anxious but

stop there's one thing that's necessary

NE

AR so Martha we know had plenty to

distract her here if we look at this

passage there's plenty to distract her

here but we have more right we have more

distractions available I mean that not

only are we human so that we are prone

to distraction but we've like invented

ways to be more distracted we've

invented efficient ways to be distracted

emails and messages and phone alerts

that uh that that tell us about the news

all the time stock market prices uh

social media reactions how many of you

chase likes you know constant requests

from bosses co-workers kids families

friends

whoever I just think this age is

objectively more distracting than that

age mostly because of this but on top of

that we kind of have a knack for getting

distracted right like we we we Chase

those

distractions we kind of fill our we have

a a talent for filling our time with

unimportant things or less important

things you know like the only time if by

the way if you want to email me and so

that I'll respond email me on the week

that I'm supposed to preach the only

time I check emails is when I'm supposed

to be prepping a

sermon the only time I ever organized

that my documents and pictures on my

phone is when I'm supposed to be

responding to

emails and

honestly when I have set aside time to

be with the Lord whether that's reading

his word prayer meditation ation a day

of prayer to get away I get I look for

distractions I'm like checking college

football scores or whatever you know I'm

we Chase

distractions do you feel this do you

feel anxious do you feel busy too busy

do you feel

distracted do you feel like you're doing

so much and accomplishing so much and

giving so much but you're not meeting

with or growing in your

faith you're not meeting with Jesus or

growing in your faith or love for him

this is

normal so how do we focus our

hearts and our lives on the one thing

that Jesus just

mentioned and uh let's the disciples

portion so Jesus responds to uh Martha's

frustration here and he tells us the

answer to the question how do we focus

how do we get rid of the distractions

how do we move past those things and he

looks at his busy frustrated harried

disciple and he says to her you're

anxious and TR no no I'm G to say it

this way Martha

Martha notice that he says he says her

name twice this is this is tender you're

anxious and troubled about many things

but one thing is necessary Mary has

chosen the good portion which will not

be taken away from her and so in this

gentle answer to his dear friend's

question and and frustration Jesus helps

us in our anxiety in our own trouble and

our own distractedness so first of all

he acknowledges hers and our situation

and he responds with gentleness you know

he doesn't berate Martha he's the god of

the universe he has the right to be

angry here but he tenderly from what we

can tell in the text he tenderly

corrects her he calls her and says come

back come back Martha he doesn't respond

in Anger he he shows Martha and he shows

the rest of us that he knows our

troubles he knows our frustrations he

knows the busyness of Life he's our

great high priest as Hebrew says when

Martha then comes to him in anger and

frustration and by the way it's it it

seems like it's in front of everyone she

not only scolds her little sister in the

third person she scolds Jesus himself

you not are you not seeing this Jesus

tell her to tell her to help me she's

scolding towards his sons tenderly

graciously with understanding towards

his distracted disciple secondly while

he acknowledges her frustration he also

speaks truth to

her he speaks truth to her heart and our

heart so though Martha is doing

something very important and she is you

know Necessary Things uh she's

misordered her priorities and Jesus

doesn't let that pass again Jesus is not

rebuking Martha for busyness for hard

work for doing her

Duty um I mean somebody had to do it

this was expected for guests in this

culture particularly we have to do our

duty

the guest especially in that culture had

to be fed but what he's rebuking her for

here is the fear of man the

self-righteousness and the critical

spirit and the need to be in control and

he's rebuking how all of these things

combine in her heart and in her words

and in her actions to cause her to

forget that he alone he himself can

satisfy her every need and desire and

third what he does here is he calls her

and us to the old old truth that the

Lord is our portion so he's using kind

of a strange phrase here he says Mary

has chosen the good portion and some

some English uh translations say Mary

has chosen the good part or Mary has

chosen what is better but either way

whatever you say there it's not

necessarily a way that we would always

say that especially the the good portion

thing um but it's a pretty common and

well understood way to talk about God in

the Old Testament and in the scriptures

and it probably comes from the Old

Testament idea of going into the

promised land and parceling out the land

and your inheritance but regardless of

where where it comes from it's a very

biblical idea and a common refrain that

you that you'll see in particularly in

the Psalms or Lamentations the Lord is

portion that's that's worth a study

that's worth four or five sermons by the

way in that context the the way he's the

way that that it's used in the Old

Testament your portion is your

inheritance it's it's your treasure it's

your hope it's your it's your present

and it's your future it's really

everything to you your portion and he's

saying Mary has chosen the good portion

now one of my favorite Psalms just to

kind of illustrate this a little bit is

uh psalm

16 love this Psalm and it speaks

beautifully to this truth about the Lord

being our portion it says in verse 5 the

Lord is My Chosen portion and my cup you

hold my

lot and then he ends the psalm like this

he said you have made known to me the

path of life in your presence there is

fullness of joy and at your right hand

are Pleasures forever more so psalm 16

much like many of these Psalms that use

that phrase the Lord is my portion and

it's it's a prayer for help and trouble

um it's it's it's but it's also an

assurance that God will help and then

it's a celebration of the fact that God

is worthy of Praise because he is our

portion he is our treasure he is our

hope he is our everything he is our

inheritance and so what we see in this

passage here in kind of in that context

is that Martha has chosen her anxiety

her

troubles as her

portion she's chosen her the idols of

her heart as her portion she's been

distracted from the presence of Jesus so

that so do you understand that like she

she's decided that she needs to focus on

making sure she doesn't get a bad Google

review basically it's like stop by

Mary's house it's like a three star

review and there's bad reviews bad host

you know what she's doing is she's

choosing her duty to be her portion to

be the center of why she's living in

that moment what feeds her what gives

her meaning what gives her

purpose her chosen portion is the

opinion of others and her misordered

priorities and her chosen portion is

making her bitter and angry and

frustrated and unhappy because it cannot

sustain her it cannot satisfy her her

treasure her hope her present her future

her righteousness her everything in that

moment is not Jesus and the presence of

the of the teacher but it's her

duty but and and so I know this is a bit

of speculation on this part but it's

almost like Mary is meditating on the

Lord is my

portion that you know maybe not but but

I like to think so uh we'll go there

today anyway it's almost like Jesus also

is showing Martha how psalm 16 works so

Mary's chosen portion is to sit at the

feet of Jesus to sit under his authority

to listen as he teaches the path of

life in his presence she finds fullness

joy and she knows that in him in his

words in his

presence there are Pleasures forever

more so friends what is your portion

this morning

today what have you chosen as your

treasure your hope your present your

future your

everything and will it satisfy you or

will it leave you empty will it fulfill

you or will it Rob you of your

joy so many things in life and some of

them are very good things by the way

family

ministry

careers they compete to be our portion

they compete to be our lot

our one necessary thing

and we love distractions we get

distracted so easily but one thing is

necessary and that's the presence of

Jesus so if you're not a Christian you

may be wondering how do I make Jesus my

portion because first of all that's a

weird way to put it but second of all

like like what does it mean that Jesus

would be my portion and so when when

when Jesus says Mary has chosen the good

portion it's really an invitation for us

to choose the good portion

Jesus here is calling himself the good

portion the one thing that's

necessary he's saying come and sit at my

feet come and be with me sit under my

authority I am your king I am your lord

and also come to him knowing that he

welcomes you he says come come here come

to me all you who are weary no matter

your background no matter your sin no

matter your situation Jesus invites you

to come and you may not realize this

but what we read just read about Mary

sitting at the feet of Jesus would have

been absolutely shocking in that day you

know it was the place of men to sit with

the rabbi it was the place of women to

go in the kitchen and make food to

prepare food for the guest for the

Gathering and so Mary was already being

very very upfront uh very what's the I

can't I can't think in English or she

was being really Brave and courageous

probably too much actually but I think

it's part of that what Luke is doing

he's showing us this is not like it used

to be this is the New

Kingdom and

Jesus says to her says to

Martha Mary's chosen the good portion

and it won't be taken

away come this is the invitation come

and sit with him he will not take it

away and then Christians What About Us

how do we make sure that Jesus is our

chosen

portion because Mary and Martha were

both followers of Jesus like they were

both Christians they were both his

people uh Jesus loves Martha he loved

her here he loves her still Jesus still

loves distracted troubled anxious

disciples like you and me so what do we

do and I think one of the things we do

is we check our posture how do we enter

into these

Gatherings because this is how we sit at

the feet of Jesus not that aanti is

Jesus he's a great guy though I like him

a lot but

like Jesus is here when we meet together

in a way that he's not just there in

your Bible study but he's there too

Jesus is there when you're reading this

Jesus is there when you're memorizing

the word Jesus is here when we're

singing the songs to together and Jesus

is here under the preached

word how do we enter this space how do

we enter this time what is our

posture is it reverence is it all are we

praying just like what we read in our um

call to worship

um one thing I have asked of the Lord

that I will seek after that I may dwell

in the house of the Lord all the days of

my life why to gaze upon the beauty of

the Lord and to inquire in his Temple

we come not to argue not to judge not to

debate him but to sit at his feet let's

check our posture secondly we renew our

Focus this is a busy world you have busy

lives none of us are immune from that

whether you're in Ministry or a mom or a

businessman or just living in

Bangkok just living here is busy and

distracting do you take time to be still

and know that he has God

in your troubles do you take time to be

still and reflect on the fact that he is

God do you take time just to be still

before him and then third we rest in

that good portion so this is worth a

search by the way this is worth a a a

good bit of your time to search out

where does the Lord where does the bible

say the Lord is my portion and what does

it mean and how does it apply to our

lives do a search on it and if you do

you'll notice that this phrase is for

good times but really mostly for Hard

Times distracting times busy times it's

for when we're celebrating and

especially for when Trouble Comes it's

for um it's for people like us who are

going through busy Hard Times doing hard

things and Jesus tells Martha this

really amazing promise Mary has chosen

the good

portion which will not be taken away

away from her so when we have chosen

Jesus as our good portion we can rest

rest secure in the fact that the peace

the fullness of joy the pleasures

forever more that he promises in psalm

16 the promises that we see in the

scriptures cannot be taken away because

he is our treasure he is our portion and

he will never fail us he will never

leave us or forsake us he is the one

necessary thing sitting at his feet is

the one necessary thing in your life

let's

pray father it is so easy to

forget

um when our bank accounts are low or

when our job demands so much from us or

when our schedules are full and we're

stressed it's so easy to forget forget

at your right hand are Pleasures forever

more and in your presence there is

fullness of

joy but it's something that we really

long to

remember uh to to um celebrate and also

just to believe on a day-to-day

basis um Lord we we pray that we would

be

with you often and with you

deeply we pray that you would be with us

that you would protect us and guide us

and we pray that this one necessary

thing would help us would help our

hearts to set priorities for life that

everything else everything else we would

lay at your feet so that we can love

them the way we

should God be our

portion be our satisfaction and we ask

this in your name amen

","":
Grace
