afternoon uh today's sermon is

going to be in English so if you need

tie translation we have translation

devices in the back of the room um and

so go ahead and grab one of those right

now and we'll wait a second while

everybody who needs that gets set

up okay I think we're gonna ready to get

started um so this is our sixth straight

week um in this series we're calling

Genesis foundations where we talk about

um the basic truths that we find in the

Book of Genesis the first book of the

Bible um so we discuss first we discuss

the creation narrative then we talked

about the fall uh then our third week

was the flood and then we spent the last

two weeks with Abraham the patriarch of

the people of Israel uh we first saw

Abraham called out of the land of his

ancestors um God uh called Abraham to

leave his uh his homeland and go to uh

an unknown land that he didn't know

anything about um and we saw um the

blessings that God promised him uh

through for his obedience uh and then

last week a Nati talked about um the

Covenant that God made with Abraham um

and this this idea of Covenant is a

really really big uh theme throughout

the Bible um and what we saw in that

Covenant was that God was both the the

guarantor or the benefactor and the

reward of the Covenant because the

reality is that that Abraham and his

descendants his offspring um will not be

able to fulfill or uphold their end of

the Covenant so what we see in Genesis

15 is that that God is really making a a

covenant with himself because God is

going to uphold the part that Abraham

and his ancestor I mean his uh

descendants were supposed to uphold um

this week today will today is our final

Sunday with Abraham uh and in the seven

chapters since um since chapter 15 uh

we're going to read through Genesis 22

today um a lot has happened in Abraham's

life um so in Genesis 15 uh Abraham is

still childless he doesn't have an heir

he doesn't have um someone who's going

to carry on this uh this blessing and

and start this um huge number of

offspring that God has promised him um

and in the times since chapter 15 uh

Abraham and his wife Sarah got impatient

and they um uh at at Sarah's

encouragement uh Abraham has a child

with uh Sarah's servant Hagar um and

that has massive implications on on

their family and um how they respond uh

to one another um it ends up with Hagar

and Ishmael uh being sent off uh away

from their family um uh Abraham has also

witnessed the destruction of Sodom and

Gomorrah he's seen God's Wrath on the

wickedness of man um he has had another

opportunity to um believe in the Lord's

protection of him that he been promised

um when he interacts with someone named

ailec um and he fails that test um so

Abraham in the time since uh leading up

to our our passage today has has failed

a bunch of tests God has put him through

a bunch of tests and he's failed them

over and over again but that what has

also happened is Isaac has been born The

Heir that God has promised him has been

born um and and that has huge

ramifications for what we're going to

read about today um it's important for

us to understand that uh what God is

doing to Abraham in chapter 22 is a test

um so it it maybe seem odd to us having

spent time with Abraham and

understanding um what God is has

promised him in the future um the

requests that God makes to him in

Genesis 22 where he asked him to offer

up his son as as a burnt offering um it

might be confusing for us at first it

makes makes this passage quite harrowing

and

um difficult to understand at first why

God is doing what he's doing um but what

we need to remember as we read through

the text is that God always has a plan

and even though it's not always evident

to us he does have a plan and he's

always in control um so as uh to turn

with your Bibles turn in your Bibles

with me to Genesis 22 um if you don't

have a Bible it's going to be on the

screen and we're going to start in verse

one after these things God tested

Abraham and said to him Abraham and he

said here I am he said take your son

your only son Isaac which I shall tell

you so Abraham Rose early in the morning

saddled his donkey and took two of his

young men with him and his son Isaac and

he cut the wood for the burn offering

and arose and went to the place of which

God had told him on the third day

Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the

place from

afar then Abraham said to his young men

stay here with the donkey I and the boy

will go over there and worship and come

again to you and Abraham took the wood

of the burnt offering and laid it on

Isaac his son and he took in his hand

the fire and the knife so they went both

both of them together and Isaac said to

his father Abraham my father and he said

here I am my son he said behold the fire

and the wood but where is the Lamb for

the burnt offering Abraham said God will

provide for himself the lamb for a burnt

offering my son so they went both of

them

together when they came to the place of

which God had told him Abraham built the

altar there and laid the wood in order

in order and bound Isaac his son and

laid him on the altar on top of the wood

then Abraham reached out his hand and

took the knife to slaughter his son but

the angel of the Lord called to him from

heaven and said abrahamabraham and he

said here I am he saido not lay your

hand on the boy or do anything to him

for now I know that you fear God seeing

you have not withheld your son your only

son from

me and Abraham lifted up his eyes and

looked and behold behind him was a ram

caught in a Thicket by his horns and

Abraham went and took the RAM and

offered it up as a burnt offering

instead of his son so Abraham called the

name of that place the Lord will provide

as it is said to this day on the

mountain of the Lord it shall be proved

invited and the angel of the Lord called

to Abraham a second time from heaven and

said by myself I have sworn declares the

Lord because you have done this and have

not withheld your son your only

son I will surely bless you and I will

surely multiply your Offspring as the

stars of heaven and as the sand that is

on the seashore and your Offspring shall

possess the Gate of his enemies and in

your Offspring shall all the nations of

the earth be blessed because you have

obeyed my voice so Abraham returned to

his young men and they arose and went

together to berseba and Abraham lived at

bers

IA pray with

me Father God we praise you that you

were able to come to that we are able to

come together as your body today to

worship Lord I pray that you will speak

through me today as we discuss the

complicated aspects of this passage I

pray that I would be your mouthpiece and

that your gospel would be preached Lord

we thank you for giving up your son as a

as a substitutionary atonement for our

sins we pray all these things in Jesus

name

amen so who who enjoys taking tests does

anybody really enjoy taking a test even

if you were like gifted as a test taker

in school you probably still dreaded

having to take a test

right see we all don't really like tests

because there's that moment when the

teacher passes out the test and you

leave through it and you assess like

okay I know that answer and it looks

like it's in a completely different

language make up an answer for that one

then sometimes you get a test and it

looks like it's in a completely

different different language like you

have no idea what's on there and your

heart rate starts to heat to to to get

faster your hands start to sweat a

little bit um but even if we the thing

about test is that even if we're

unprepared even if we don't do well even

if we do if we pass them with flying

colors if we know every answer they are

really beneficial for us because tests

tell us how how much we've how much we

know about a subject right so how tests

tell us you know how much knowledge

we've attained how much of a of a

process we've learned um how much our

our habit of exercises has exercising

has positively affected our health um

and and even how great our faith is um

so throughout the Bible God tests his

people think of the Book of Job uh God

gives Satan the authority to to destroy

job's life um but he's he's not allowed

to to actually take his life from him um

and job loses everything he loses his

health his family um all his possession

but he still refuses to curse God um

again with with the people of Israel

once they're when they're wandering in

the wilderness um God when he provides a

Mana for them is actually testing them

he tells them very specific instructions

he says gather exactly what you need for

today um and tomorrow I will provide it

again and you gather what you need for

tomorrow well the Israelites didn't

actually believe that God was going to

provide what they needed for tomorrow

they uh saved some and guess what

happened it went bad overnight because

God told them you will believe in my

provision day by day by day you will

believe in my provision of Daily

Bread it's important for us to

understand that God does not test people

without a purpose um in the Book of

James James talks about uh he says in

verses in verses 2 through 4 of chapter

1 count it all joy my brothers when you

meet Trials of various kinds for you

know that the testing of your faith

produces steadfastness and let

steadfastness have its full effect that

you may perfect may be perfect and

complete lacking in nothing testing

strengthens us it's a NE it's necessary

for our continued growth in in our

relationship with God and in our

faith that's what God is doing to

Abraham in this chapter God tests

Abraham to see the strength of his faith

how far has he come since he started

this walk with God when since he was

called out of the land of his of his

family God tests Abraham by by asking

him to give up that which he holds most

dear in his

life in doing so God gives us a

foretaste of his Providence plan of

substitutionary atonement for all of us

see this is a big biblical truth we're

going to talk about today this idea of a

substitute a sacrifice for us God uh

we're going to break this down into four

parts so we're going to first talk about

um God's let's

see God's command to Abraham in verses

1- two Abraham's obedience in verses

3-14 uh the sacrificial lamb in verses

11-4 and God's provision vision and

Covenant reaffirmation in verses

11-9 in light of Abraham's story that

we've heard so far God's command um to

him in verses 1 through two might sound

a bit

confusing um Abraham waited decades

literally decade Decades of his life for

the Fulfillment of uh to receive this

child that he now has um and he's

watched him grow um into at least an

adolescent maybe into his early 20s

that's how old Isaac probably is In this

passage um so he's not this not not even

a child he's he's he is a grown person

in his own right um he loves his son uh

God waited until he he is like grown to

to love his son to ask him to do this um

he's probably the person that Abraham

loves the most in the world he's his

Heir he's his he's he's the the living

embodiment of the promises that God has

made to

him so now God is asking him to sacrif

ice this prize this Heir this son um in

in an in an offering of worship to God

um and to Abraham this might might have

seemed strange at first uh in in the in

the books of the law in Leviticus and

Deuteronomy we read where where God

condemns child sacrifice so now we have

to kind of um make sense of this in our

mind so what what is God really asking

him to do here is God asking Abraham to

to break the law to sin

um so the Israelites Israelites are are

commanded not not to uh sacrifice

children in contrast to the the Nations

that are living around them the Pagan

Nations that serve serve other gods

around them um so so how do we Rectify

what God is asking Abraham to do here uh

the netive makes it clear that the

original um thing that the narrator

tells us in verse one he says uh the

narrator makes it clear that that this

is intended as a test only right this is

a test of Abraham's Faith um and in

James 1:13

uh James tells us uh let no one say when

he is tempted I am being tempted by God

for God cannot be tempted with evil and

he himself tempts no one so it's not

like in this situation that God is

tempting Abraham to do something he

shouldn't do he's testing his faith to

see how far he'll go he's asking

him what what he's what he's making

Abraham realize um is that that Abraham

has everything in his mind that God has

promised at this point he's living in

the land that God promised he has the

son that God promised and God is saying

is all of that more important to you now

than me now that you have everything

that was promised to you is that now

more important than

me let's look again at verse two and

just at this command again he says uh

verse two says uh take your son your

only son Isaac whom you love and go to

the land of Mariah and offer him there

as a burnt offering on one of the

mountains of which I shall tell you he

says take your son which son the only

son that you have right because at this

point he sent off Ishmael um and so

Isaac is his lone son his only

son the one the one that you love and go

sacrifice him on in the place that I

will tell you I as a father myself I

can't imagine hearing that command I

can't imagine what must have gone

through Abraham's

mind um it's difficult to comprehend how

I would have how I might have responded

to the same command that Abraham has

given

here but we need to understand that this

is not a singular calling that Abraham

uh receives here in Genesis 22 uh think

of the words of Jesus if a man loves his

uh loves his father or mother or sister

or brother more than me he is Unworthy

of me then Luke says in 14 in in vers in

verse in chapter 14 verse 26 uh if

anyone comes to me and does not hate his

own father and mother and wife and

children and brothers and sisters yes

and even his own life he cannot be my

disciple the cost of following Jesus is

is heavy and what Jesus calls us to do

is to love him love God more than

everything else in our life not just

material possessions the other people

that are in our life those who we

cherish most the things we hold most

dear but we have to understand that even

though this call cost is great it's

worth

it Jesus is worthy of that cost and he

has the authority to ask for it so let's

see how Abraham responds to this

difficult test of

faith you have to think that Abraham

took a second to ponder what this might

mean for him he has to he has to think

about the he must have thought about the

Inc inconsistencies between God's

promises and his current command to um

Slaughter Isaac as it says later in the

chapter he also had to had to have

thought about the in the effect this

might have had on his marriage uh he

would have left Sarah with Isaac and

returned six days later blood stained

clothes and no Isaac his wife would have

never looked at him the same there's no

way despite all of this Abraham begins

to follow God's command Abraham is a

poster child for Proverbs 35 and6 trust

in the Lord with all your heart and do

not lean on your own understanding in

all your ways acknowledge Him and he

will make your path

straight look with me again at verse

three of Genesis 22 it says so Abraham

Rose early in the morning saddled his

donkey and took two of his young men

with him and his son Isaac and he cut

the wood for the burnt offering and

arose and went to the place of which God

had told him it doesn't say that he um

left early in the morning because the

place they were going was uh was very

far away uh it says that to emphasize

the unflinching unhesitating obedience

that Abraham shows here he hears God's

command the next day he does exactly

what God

asked can you imagine how agonizing this

three-day Journey would have been for

Abraham what do you think was going on

in his

mind we this chapter doesn't give us a

lot of insight into that uh but we know

that by the time that he arrived at

Mariah three days later um he was

certain God had a plan

when they arrived at the place the place

that God had had had told him to go uh

this is what he says he says uh he said

then Abraham said to the his young men

in verse 5 stay here with the donkey and

I and the boy will go over there and

worship and come again to you he says uh

we will come again to you there there

are versions that say uh we will come we

we will we will return to you what he's

saying is they are both going to return

he's not lying to his his uh servants to

get away

to to make them think that um he doesn't

know how it's going to happen but he

believes they're both going to come back

the book of Hebrews 11 verses uh 17- 19

actually talks about what was probably

going on in Abraham's

mind uh it says by faith Abraham when he

was tested offered up Isaac and he who

had received the promises was in in the

act of offering up his only son of whom

it was said through Isaac shall your

Offspring be named he considered that

God was able even to raise him from the

dead dead from which figuratively

speaking he did re receive him

back so while we cannot we can't know

the pain the

agony what he would have went through

during those three days we know that by

the time that Abraham arrived he was

convinced that even if he had to kill

his son God could resurrect him and in

some ways he

did it's at this point in the story that

it slows to an excruciating Pace you can

feel the weight of each action that's

that's happening um we begin to wonder

is Abraham actually going to go through

with

it so Isaac and Abraham depart from the

servants and they begin climbing the

mountain U to go to the place where the

offering is going to take place um Isaac

is in fact carrying the wood for the

offering on his own shoulders much like

another offering who carried his own

cross to the place of his sacrifice

about 2,000 years after this happened

and Isaac asked a question that must

have struck Abraham with the force of of

a hammer um he asked them here's the

wood here's the fire here's the knife

but where is the

lamb and Abraham simply responds in

faith he says God will provide the lamb

for the

offering verses 9 and 10 break down each

action of Abraham as he painstakingly

builds the altar he binds Isaac and he

lays him on the Altar and he's preparing

to kill him the faith of Abraham is

mirrored in Isaac remember Isaac is is

not a child at this point he's not he

but he doesn't fight

back he simply trusts his father that he

has a

plan he doesn't know what's going to

happen but he trusts God and Abraham in

the same way way that Abraham is

trusting God at the last possible moment

when the knife is raised to strike God

intervenes in waiting until the last

possible moment God rings every ounce of

meaning out of

this Abraham has gone through the

decision and the will and the battle to

decide to actually kill his son on that

altar

yet no harm is permitted to

Isaac and not a

an and not a u a Nuance of devotion is

unnoticed for all intents and purposes

Isaac is

dead Abraham has accept accepted that

fact by raising that knife over his son

to kill him he has accepted the fact

that Isaac is

dead his grapp LED with that decision

and he's ready to

strike at the last moment God intervenes

and provides a substitute what was dead

is now given back to him full of life

and in that moment in the wake of that

substitution Abraham utters a name of

God he says Jehovah Gyra Yahweh Gyra the

Lord sees the Lord provides because on

the mountain of the Lord it will be made

clear here we see the love of the father

for the son the son's love for the

Father the willingness of the Son and

the principle of

substitution there's great significance

to the location God chooses for this

event to occur uh God sends Abraham to

the mountains of Mariah it's on these

same mountains that about a thousand

years later um God will withhold his

Angel of Death from the people of

Jerusalem and David will offer a uh an

offering of Thanksgiving for for that

Grace for that Mercy um it's on these

mountains that Solomon will build the

temple where thousands and countless of

sacrifices of atonement were made and

about a thousand years after that it's

where um another sacrificial lamb

trudged up the side of a mountain um the

son of

man uh bearing the wood of his own

personal

offering and lives were once again

spared when we read this

event when we read this event uh about

the testing of Abraham of the sacrifice

of Isaac of the substitution of the ram

in the place of Isaac it's impossible

for us not to think of Jesus Christ on

Calvary in light of Calvary we see the

glory of what God is doing here and the

Very per perplexity of what God has

commanded suddenly is flooded with light

when we understand that God intends to

explain to us the central principle of

substitution and he intends to express

to us something of his own involvement

in the sacrifice of Christ on Calvary

in preparation for this sermon I read uh

a sermon that Lian Duncan preached uh

about 20 years ago on this same passage

uh in it I I there was a quote that uh I

just had to read in full for you all uh

quote you see this passage you see this

passage as a poignant reminder of the

cost of what of that sacrifice to God

our heavenly father indeed it is a

reminder of the father's involvement

when we see Abraham in response to this

command trudging up the side of Mariah

we know that his heart is breaking

because he loves his son but Abraham's

love for his son is a pale shadow of the

Father's Love For His Son the Son and

the heavenly father is saying here when

you see my son Ascend to Calvary don't

you dare think you love him more than I

do and when you see Abraham's hand

raised to slay his son the father is

saying don't you think that I'm some

passive standby witness from a distance

of what is happening at

Calvary I am the one who is bringing

this to be and I'm doing it because it's

the only way that you can be spared from

your sins I'm not standing back at a

distance and watching my son suffer I am

the one bringing it

about I am the one with the knife in my

hand and that knife is there because

it's absolutely necessary that a

substitutionary sacrifice be given for

you if you are to be with of that

involvement and he showing us the

supremacy of faith in receiving that

benefit end

quote as Jesus bore that cross to

Calvary there is no Angel's voice crying

out stop don't lay a hand on him or harm

him in any way as there's an angel's

voice calling out here no instead there

are only mocking jeering voices from a

crowd who has betrayed the Son of God

and has condemned condemned him to

die there is no Ram caught in a Thicket

to take Jesus Place Jesus is the ram

he is the substitute for you for me for

each and every one of

us we deserve to be the ones hanging on

that cross for our

sin instead Jesus took our place and

bore our sin on his

shoulders so that we could be

redeemed we like Isaac were as good as

Dead Before The Substitute of Jesus

Ephesians two says that we we were dead

in our Tre trespasses and sins we were

hopeless allowing sin to rule in our

lives and our hearts he goes on to say

starting in verse four but God being

rich in Mercy because of the great love

with which he loved us even when we were

dead in our trespasses made us alive

together with Christ by Grace you have

been saved and raised up with them

raised and raised us up with him and

seated us with him in the Heavenly

places in Christ Jesus so that in the

coming ages he might show the

immeasurable Riches of his grace and

kindness toward us in G in Christ Jesus

for by Grace you have been saved through

faith this is not your own doing it is

the gift of God not a result of works so

that no one may

boast there's nothing we did to earn

this Grace there's nothing we currently

do to earn this Grace God offers it to

us as a free

gift it's not a result of works it's not

a result of being good enough we were

dead and now we are alive

just as Isaac was given back to Abraham

alive even though he was basically

dead and all of that is through the

substitutional gift of Christ Jesus on

the cross on the

cross the final aspect of this passage

is the reward for Abraham's obedience

look with me again at verse

15 and the angel of the Lord called to

Abraham a second time from heaven and

not withheld your son your only son I

will surely bless you and I will surely

multiply your Offspring as the stars of

heaven and as the sand that is on the

seashore and your Offspring shall

his young men and they arose and went to

berseba and Abraham lived at

berseba so as a reward for his continued

faith and obedience God reaffirms the

Covenant that he made with Abraham

Abraham will be blessed his offspring

will be incalculable his offspring will

conquer the lands of their enemies and

ultimately his offspring will bless the

Nations and God stamps This Promise by

swearing upon himself the writer of

Hebrews comments on this in chapter 6

vers 13-

18 uh it says for when God made a

promise to Abraham since he had no one

Greater by whom to say swear he swore by

himself saying surely I will bless you

and multiply you and thus Abraham having

patiently waited obtained the promise

for people swear by something greater

than themselves and in all their

disputes on an oath is final for

confirmation so when God desired to show

more convincingly to The Heirs of the

promise the unchangeable character of

his purpose he guaranteed it with an

oath so that by two unchangeable things

in which it is impossible for God to lie

we who have fled for Refuge might have

strong encouragement to hold fast to the

Hope set before

us our God is unchanged changeable he is

faithful and it he can confirm this

Covenant in no stronger way than by

swearing on upon himself because he

cannot lie he is the living embodiment

of Truth and so when he makes a promise

we know that he will follow through each

and every

time as we close this afternoon I'd like

to take a moment to to kind of point

this passage at your heart um if we if

you don't hear anything else today I

want you to take this away from this

sermon uh there's a relatively new

worship song um titled Gyra uh that I

really love because one of one of the

reasons I love it is because it reminds

me of this

passage it reminds me that my heavenly

father withheld nothing not even his own

son so that I could BR that I could be

brought back to him so that I could be

made right with

him he will always see me and he will

always provide exactly what I need even

if it's not what I think I need at at

the time I know that God will meet all

my

needs there's a refrain in the song it

goes like this it says you are Gyra you

are enough Gyra you are enough and I

will be content in every

circumstance you are Gyra you are enough

forever enough always enough more than

enough

enough is God enough for

you if God were to come to you and say

take that thing that you value most in

your life and give it up for me could

you do

it do you believe that God is alone is

enough for

you is there some or is there something

else you feel like you have to hold on

to besides

God if you were an Abraham's shoes what

would you have done how would you have

responded would you have arose early the

next morning and in unflinching

unhesitating obedience done what God

asked or would you have been more like

Jonah and ran away tried to get out of

what God was asking you to

do we need not fear that God is asking

more of us than we can

handle see when we doubt that um when we

believe that what we have is better than

God we believe not not not giving that

thing up is more valuable than the the

benefits that we will receive from God

later

on but what we can remember is that

Jehovah Gyra means God sees

you God will provide Romans 8:32 says

this he who did not spare his own son

but gave him up for us all how will he

not also with him graciously give us all

things there's nothing that God God will

withhold from us he has our best

interest at

heart it's easy to doubt that sometimes

but the reality for us is that God has

our best interested

heart the truth is sometimes we don't

have our best interested heart we think

we do but we don't but God always does

he will provide for you in every

circumstance if some part of your life

feels hopeless right now God sees

you if you're discouraged and you're

down

God sees

you if you've been waiting for what

feels like forever God will

provide if you've lost friends family

loved

ones the Lord will provide if you feel

weak tired

spent the Lord sees you and he will

provide above everything else remember

that the Lord sees his people and will

always provide for them

let's

pray father God we thank you that you

are Jehovah Gyra we thank you for your

constant provision we thank you that

through your perfect plan of atonement

that we have received the righteousness

of our substitute your son Jesus Christ

we thank you that through the death of

your son that we may be made right with

you again Lord we worship and adore you

as our provider and great

sustainer without you we are lost and

alone in this broken World Lord direct

our steps

and give us the strength to follow you

and withhold nothing from you in Jesus

name we pray amen

","":
Grace
