I

want to thank Ajan Nati, the elders, and

the leadership for inviting our family

here. And it's what a what a delight it

is. Um my family and I have been in

Bangkok now for about three years. And

typically we worship and serve at Banga

Christian Fellowship.

But our family, one of our favorite

games, if uh slides are up, one of our

favorite games is Uno.

Now, I know there are many variations,

but I'm a bit of a traditionalist, and

so I like regular Uno.

One of the cards in the game is the Uno

reverse card.

For those of you who might not be

familiar with the game, um, play goes in

a certain direction and then when

someone plays a reverse card, play

continues in the reverse direction.

So, I could be sitting there waiting to

play my card, that will make the person

to my immediate right draw four cards,

and I'm excited to do it. And then the

person to my immediate left plays a

reverse card. And then the play

continues further and further and

further away from me.

One of the key phrases in today's text,

if not the entire book of Esther is the

reverse occurred.

No, Mori and Esther did not play an

actual uno reverse card,

but the reverse

of what was expected and what was

supposed to happen occurred.

An incredible,

incredible thing.

You see, the people were supposed to be

destroyed and yet the reverse occurred.

Perhaps for some of us

worshiping here or worshiping online,

maybe you are

praying for a breakthrough.

Maybe things have been going in a

certain direction and you're hoping that

God can change things. Maybe you're

hoping that God will play that reverse

card in your life.

Maybe

it's in

waiting for a visa or maybe a document

that just hasn't been moving.

Perhaps someone you know or someone you

love has had an unexpected turn in their

life or maybe it's in our ministries.

What does today's text tell us

about God reversing and changing all

things? And what encouragement can we

glean from it?

If you have your Bibles, please turn to

Esther chapter 9.

Esther chapter 9 verses 1-19.

I'll be reading from the English

Standard Version and it'll also be up on

your screens.

Now in the 12th month, which is the

month of Adar, on the 13th day of the

same, when the king's command and edict

were about to be carried out, on the

very day when the enemies of the Jews

hoped to gain the mastery over them, the

The Jews gained mastery over those who

hated them. The Jews gathered in their

cities throughout all the provinces of

King Ahasser to lay hands on those who

sought their harm.

and no one could stand against them for

the fear of them had fallen on all

peoples.

All the officials of the provinces and

the sat traps and the governors and the

royal agents also helped the Jews for

the fear of Mori had fallen on them for

Mori was great in the king's house and

his fame spread throughout all the

provinces. For the man Mori grew more

and more powerful.

The Jews struck all their enemies with

the sword, killing and destroying them

and did as they pleased to those who

hated them.

In sus of the city citadel itself, the

Jews killed and destroyed 500 men and

also killed Parandatha and Don and

Aspatha and Paratha and Adalia and

Aridatha and Pararmashta and Arasai and

Aradai and Bisatha, the 10 sons of Hmon,

the son of Hamidatha, the enemy of the

Jews. But they laid no hand on the

plunder.

That very day the number of those killed

in Susa the citadel was reported to the

king. And the king said to Queen Esther,

"In Soua, the citadel, the Jews have

killed and destroyed 500 men and also

the 10 sons of Hmon. What then have they

done in the rest of the king's

provinces? Now what is your wish? It

shall be granted you. And what further

is your request? It shall be fulfilled."

And Esther said, "If it pleased the

king, let the Jews who are in Soua be

allowed tomorrow also to do according to

this day's edict, and let the 10 sons of

Hmon be hanged on the gallows." So the

king commanded this to be done. A decree

was issued in Souza, and the 10 sons of

Hmon were hanged. The Jews who were in

Soua gathered also on the 14th day of

the month of Adar, and they killed 300

men in Susa, but they laid no hands on

the plunder.

Now the rest of the Jews who were in the

king's provinces also gathered to defend

their lives and got relief from their

enemies and killed 75,000 of those who

hated them. But they laid no hands on

the plunder. This was on the 13th day of

the month of Adar. And on the 14th day

they rested and made that day a day of

feasting and gladness. But the Jews who

were in Souza gathered on the 13th day,

on the 14th, and rested on the 15th day,

making that day a day of feasting and

gladness. Therefore, the Jews of the

villages who live in the rural towns

hold the 14th day of the month of Adar

as a day for gladness and feasting as a

holiday and as a day on which they send

gifts of food to one another.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be

to God.

Now, before we dive into today's text,

we have to address how uncomfortable

this text can be.

The Bible says that the Jews killed and

destroyed their enemies and did as they

pleased to those who hated them.

This sounds so barbaric.

The Jews killed at least 75,000 people.

And Esther, when asked what she

requested, she requested another day so

that the killings could continue.

And the Jews respond by having a

celebration with feasting and gladness.

Usually when we think of the book of

Esther, we think of iconic and

inspirational quotes like for such a

time as this or if I perish I perish.

I think it's safe to say that none of us

have art in our homes that have Esther

saying and let the sons of Hmon hang on

the gallows.

But this is in the Bible.

And as followers of Christ, we believe 2

Timothy 3:16 that says, "All scripture

is breathed out by God and profitable

for teaching, for reproof, for

correction, and for training in

righteousness, that the man of God may

be complete, equipped for every good

work."

For us modern listeners of the word,

these passages and many passages

can be hard to read. For example,

Joshua's conquests

and what we just talked about in the

book of Esther, the fact that we

remember and highlight these

inspirational verses, but yet many of us

have never read or remember the

slaughter that happened.

Perhaps it highlights our propensity to

highlight certain portions of scripture

and ignore or gloss over others.

For example, the story of David and

Goliath.

Probably one of the most famous stories

in the entire Bible.

We teach it in Sunday school. Our kids

do crafts related to David and Goliath.

You all are probably familiar with the

story.

David, the young shepherd boy, faces the

giant, heavily armored Goliath. And he

faces him with nothing more than a sling

and five smooth stones. And David, in

faith, trusting in God, approaches a

giant and defeats him. Yay.

And we usually stop the story right

there.

For those of you who've read it, I'm not

going to spoil it, but what happens next

is really gruesome.

The fact of the matter is, brothers and

sisters, there is violence in the Bible

and even holy war.

But as we just said, we believe that all

scripture is useful and necessary for

all of life

and faith.

Now, regarding holy war, a lot of people

have objections to holy war and scholars

and commentators have written very

wonderful and insightful volumes. But

allow me to give four things about holy

war that might be helpful. The first

thing is that holy war is always

commanded by the Lord or the prophets.

It's never up to the people of God to

take violent action on their own accord

or at their own whim.

Second,

holy war almost always is reserved for

taking or holding the promised land.

And third, holy war is a war of judgment

against evil. God as a righteous, holy

judge judges evil. And finally, the Lord

fights for his people.

The Lord fights on behalf of God's

people to judge evil as the righteous

judge.

And yet, even with all this,

some parts of scripture can seem unfair

and unjust.

And if you have questions like that,

that's great. We need to wrestle with

some of those hard portions of scripture

because all of it is breathed out by

God. If you have questions, please talk

to your pastors and elders. Now, I'll be

available after service if you have

questions, too. We need to wrestle with

these passages and not just gloss over

them because they make us a little

uncomfortable because there's incredible

truth in them.

So, now that we talked about that, let's

dive into today's text. I believe the

Lord is talking to all of us about

the imperceptible

and inconvenient covenant. The font's a

whole lot bigger than it's supposed to

be. So, it's supposed to say more, but

it's supposed to say the imperceptible

and inconvenient covenant.

Now, we're going to address the three

major words in that phrase one at a

time. So, the first word is

imperceptible.

In the book of Esther, the name of God

is never mentioned once.

The temple and the law are strangely

absent. There's not a single prayer

uttered in the book of Esther, although

the people of God do fast when they're

faced with annihilation.

But God is strangely absent. And in some

parts of the narrative, it looks like

God has absolutely abandoned his people.

It looks like God has forgotten about

him and we can't see him.

And yet, brothers and sisters, those

moments

where it seems that God is absent

are those moments where God might be

powerfully present.

God is imperceptible. But as you've

heard throughout this series on Esther,

the invisible hand of God has been

guiding, leading, and protecting his

people.

And in the book of Esther, though God is

not explicitly mentioned, there are a

lot of coincidences. Let's look at some

of these coincidence from just the first

half of the book.

King Aas Sueris is mad at his queen and

he just so happens to host an ancient

version of a reality TV dating show that

Esther happens to win and she just so

happens to become queen.

And it just so happens that her

relative, Morortei, just happens to be

by the gate when two of the king's

servants just happened to be talking

about their conspiracy to kill the king.

And Morai reports that to the king and

it just so happens that decades that

gets recorded in the king's chronicles

and later it just so happens that the

king can't sleep. And the king can't

sleep. So he asks for his chronicles to

be read.

Maybe some of us can relate. When you

read first and 2 Chronicles in the

Bible, maybe you fall asleep.

But the king has this red and it just so

happens that the servants turn to the

page where Mori is mentioned. And the

king had forgotten about Morortei. But

it just so happens that he remembers him

and thinks, "I need I need to reward

Morai."

And it just so happens this was when

Hmon was plotting evil against Mori and

his people. And instead Hmon has to lead

Mori around the courtyard on a horse

shouting things that glorify and honor

Morortei.

So many coincidences.

If I were to tell you a story about my

life like this, you know, if this thing

didn't happen and then this other thing,

if that didn't happen and then this

other thing that didn't happen, well

then none of this would have happened. I

mean, what are the chances?

Oh well,

if I said that you would say oh well

though are you are you cra that those

situations that's those things happening

that's cra the chances of that happening

are are crazy it's impossible and in

fact those coincidence coincidences

might not be coincidences

at all

although God is not explicitly mentioned

it is pretty clear that his invisible

hand is guiding, leading and protecting

his people.

The same hand, the mighty hand and

outstretched arm that guided God's

people through the wilderness has

protected God's people here in Esther.

And today, that same invisible hand,

though we may not perceive him, is

guiding, leading, and protecting

us.

You may not be able to perceive God, but

he is at work and you can rest in the

fact that he is at work.

Jesus himself even said that

the kingdom of heaven is hidden.

In the kingdom of heaven, its hidden

nature is a feature, not a defect.

God often hides spiritual treasure. And

so you may not be able to perceive God,

but God is at work in powerful ways.

And I would imagine if we went around

this room,

we could tell some incredible stories

of coincidences

of how God's divine providence has led

us to this place. If you move to

Bangkok, I guarantee you you have

stories of how God's providence led you

to this place,

if you're a parent, or if you're a

grandparent,

your children and your grandchildren

need to know these stories.

They need to know about the invisible

hand of God, of how divine providence

has provided for your family and led you

to this point.

If you're in a small group, your small

group needs to know these stories. Needs

to know how God has led you and

miraculously provided for you. If you're

a Christian, all of us, all of us have a

story of how God miraculously met us.

I want to invite you to close your eyes

briefly and and bow your heads. And

we're just going to pray very briefly

and ask the Holy Spirit to highlight for

you

a testimony or a story. Maybe it was

recent. Maybe it was a long time ago.

Maybe it's something you remember. Maybe

it's something you forgot. But ask the

Holy Spirit to highlight for you a story

or testimony that shows God's divine

providence. Let's pray for a moment.

And with our eyes closed and keeping in

a posture of prayer, let's ask the Holy

Spirit to highlight

someone or some people that we should

share this testimony with this week.

Let's pray together.

Amen.

God may be imper imperceptible.

We may not see him, but we can trust

that he is at work.

But how do we know he's at work?

For some of us, if we're going through a

valley or challenging times, how do we

know that God is still working? The

second word I want to look at is

covenant.

Our God is a God of covenant. He's a God

who makes and fulfills his promises. You

see, if the Jews were destroyed that day

as their enemies had planned,

the covenants that God made with

Abraham,

with Moses, and with David would have

been hanging by a thread.

Despite kings that didn't honor God,

didn't know the Lord, despite enemies of

God's people, God continued to provide

for and lead his people because he is a

God of covenant.

As Ajan Chan told reminded us last week

that in chapter 3:13 there was an edict

that the Jews would be destroyed and

those same words are used in chapter 8

11 and those same words are used in

chapter 9:5 except now instead of

against the Lord's people the reverse

occurred and it happened for the enemies

of God.

And this is a common story throughout

the scriptures

where enemies of God's people or other

people sought harm for the Lord's people

and yet God worked it for good.

Some examples like Joseph in Genesis or

Daniel.

Stories of how the things that people

meant for harm, God used for their good

and for God's glory.

But this reversal

points forward and it pales in

comparison to the ultimate reversal.

When the reverse occurred, the most

ultimate reverse that occurred is the

cross of Jesus Christ.

The enemies of Jesus and Satan thought

that they won. They thought they

defeated the son of God. And yet what

looked like utter defeat

was his victory and was our victory.

The lamb that was slain is the lion of

Judah.

The reverse occurred.

And Jesus said

that this cup

is the new covenant in my blood. Our God

is a God of covenant.

And not only did the cross reverse the

curse,

but it also reversed things for us

personally.

Ephesians chapter 2 says that we were

dead in our trespasses, but were made

alive with Christ. You see, when we

believed in Jesus Christ by grace

through faith, God didn't take what was

already there and make it a little bit

better. We are not a version 2.0 of

ourselves.

No, the Bible says that we are born

again.

That we are a new creation.

God has turned what was dead and has

made it alive. We were as doomed as the

Jews in the book of Esther. And yet we

are saved by the great reversal of the

We are saved because of him. And so by

grace through faith all of us can be

saved. That we who once had no hope as

we said earlier we now have a firm and

sure hope.

And as the old song says,

"Let the weak say, I am strong." And let

the poor say, "I am rich." Because of

what the Lord has done for us.

Our God is a God of covenant. And so

even when he's imperceptible, even when

we can't see him, we know that he is at

work because he is a God who makes and

fulfills his promises.

And he's a God of covenant

at great cost

at the cost of his only begotten son.

But the covenant also has a cost for as

well.

Salvation is free, but the covenant of

God costs us something as well. And the

final thing we'll look at is the fact

that the covenant is inconvenient.

Now, inconvenient is not typically a

word that we think of when we think of

the word covenant.

But as those who have been shown

unfathomable grace,

we are commanded to show grace to

others. And that can often be

inconvenient.

You see, we are in a different point of

redemptive history. In Esther chapter 9,

the people of God were in grave danger.

On that day, the 13th of Adar, the

people of God were supposed to be

destroyed.

Hmon threw lots.

As we'll probably learn next week, he

threw lots and decided this was the day

that the Jews were going to die and be

destroyed. But instead, the reverse

occurred. Instead of that thing, the

reverse occurred and God saved his

people in an incredible, incredible way.

And so, this is a different point in

redemptive history. I mean, that's 2500

years ago.

Now, the book of Esther is not holding

up Morai and Esther as morally righteous

people. It's certainly not saying that

the killing of 75,000 people is a

morally correct thing. The Bible is not

holding up the kings of Persia as moral

exemplars.

But what the book of Esther tells us is

that God works through sinful and fallen

humanity

to achieve his purposes and his

You see, Hmon and his sons being hung on

the gallows was a precursor to the

crucifixion.

The Romans didn't invent crucifixion,

but they perfected it. And so Jesus hung

on the cross. And Hmon and his sons,

they died on a early a precursor, a

prototype of the cross. But they died on

the cross for their sins, for their

evil.

Jesus died on the cross

for our sins.

Because of our wickedness and our

rebelliousness,

Jesus hung on the cross.

And we who should have known God's

wrath, who should have been judged by

the living God, have received salvation

and receive life. What incredible news.

And that God, that gracious God commands

us to show that grace to others.

You see, it's easier to respond to evil

with evil.

When we encounter evil, it's very

inconvenient to respond with grace

because when we do, we have to die to

ourselves. It's very inconvenient.

Now, sometimes

I start to think

I'm doing pretty good in my

sanctification

and then I get behind the wheel of a

car.

Nowhere is it easier to respond to evil

with evil than in the car. We were

recently in America and we were there

for maybe a few weeks and someone was

tailgating me and the moment they got a

chance they went around me and they

checked their brakes on me. That means

they they pumped their brakes to like

really irritate me.

All of my training to be a pastor, to be

a missionary

all went out the window.

It's so easy to respond to evil with

But when we respond to evil with grace,

that allows an opportunity for the light

of the gospel to shine into a situation.

But it comes at a cost.

Just as our salvation comes at a cost

for us to show grace, it comes at great

cost to ourselves. is really

Is there someone that maybe you're

having a hard time forgiving?

Maybe the Lord's put it on your heart or

brought them back on your mind. Maybe

the Lord is inviting you to pray for

that person. They don't deserve your

forgiveness.

They certainly can't earn your

forgiveness,

and you shouldn't give them your

But the reverse occurs.

Who's someone that is really hard for us

to show grace and love to?

As those who have been forgiven much, we

can forgive much. As those who have been

loved much, we can love much.

Is there someone in our lives

though it may be inconvenient to us that

we need to share the love and light of

the gospel with this week.

Today we talked about the imperceptible

It really is a miracle that God's people

survived in exile under wicked kings

and they flourished so that the

deliverer could come out of the line of

David.

Now, for those of us those of us in

Bangkok, we probably hopefully don't

have any outright enemies that are

seeking to destroy us.

But we definitely feel

opposition

and difficulty and challenges.

For those of you who've moved to

Thailand, you're in a foreign land, a

foreign culture.

For those of you who are Thai and grew

up in Thailand,

being a Christian in some ways makes you

foreign in this land as well.

So, how can we, like the people of God

at the time of Esther, shine the love

and light of the gospel through the

imperceptible and inconvenient covenant?

You may not be able to see God, but know

that he's at work.

And it may be inconvenient to forgive

and to show grace, but we can do so

because we have a God who makes and

fulfills all of his promises.

And may that God, the God of covenant,

be glorified. And may the light of the

gospel shine on Bangkok

through the imperceptible and

inconvenient covenant shining in and

through us transformed followers of

Christ. Would you bow your heads and

hearts with me for a moment in prayer?

Almighty God,

thank you for your great love that we

sang about earlier.

We didn't deserve it. We didn't earn it.

We couldn't earn it.

And yet, you willingly gave yourself for

Hmon and his sons died for their sins.

but you died for ours.

Thank you for this great love.

And I pray as those who've received this

incredible love,

may we

by grace through faith

live that out so that those around us

would experience your goodness. I pray

that as we share testimonies of your

divine providence guiding us, that

people would see the light of the good

news of Jesus Christ in and through us.

I pray for my brothers and sisters here

at Grace City. Thank you for the new

members that were received today. And

may this church continue to be a beacon

in this city for the good news of Jesus

Christ, the imperceptible and

inconvenient covenant God who is at work

and who is going to win the battle. May

you receive glory now and forever more.

In Jesus name we pray. Amen.

","":"
["GET
