If you've been a

part of Grace City for some time, maybe

a couple of years, maybe longer, you

will know that we have been preaching

through 10 of the Psalms each year. So,

today is Psalm 98. So, if you do the

math, and if I did the math correctly,

we've been doing it for 10 years now,

coming up on our our Psalm 100,

how many of you were here 10 years ago

when we started this series? Raise your

hand. Just curious. Okay, good. Yeah, a

few hands. I see those hands. So, Psalm

98 today. So, this part of the Bible,

uh, the Psalms, they are actually songs.

And so the these are song lyrics that

were sung. And in fact, many of our

worship songs today are inspired by the

Psalms. They come from the Psalms, even

sometimes verbatim using different

translations.

And so what these texts uh are about is

they're to be sung. They are to be sung

unto God. And today's psalm makes that

very clear. In fact, it's very explicit

about that. We'll see that it's about

singing, about praising God through

song. And just as singing is so

expressive

in the Psalms, we see uh the full range

of human emotion,

you might say. Uh in essence, we see our

lives and our emotions on display in the

Psalms. Think about uh dancing. Think

about modern dance, tap, jazz,

classical,

ballroom dancing, dancing throughout the

ages.

You know, we go through our lives with

normal range of motion, right? You're

sitting now. You walked into this room.

We stand, we sit, we walk. But when we

dance, and I know some of you dance,

like to dance, and you um you put videos

online of your dancing, it's very

expressive.

Dancing is it's a greater level a

heightened expression of our normal

range of motion.

In the same way singing, think about the

ways that we communicate. We use our

voice. Some of us sign, some of us uh

communicate through um our expressions

and our faces. But when we do that, our

expression is elevated when we sing,

when we express through our hands. Some

nationalities really use their hands

when they speak, right? They express

through a greater range of motion. So

there's something powerful

about singing, about dancing, about a

certain range of motion. Is it any

wonder when we look and study uh all the

nations and cultures throughout the

world, we find expressive dance and

music and rhythm and song and lyrics.

Right? So I want us to think about all

of that. Have all that in mind today

when we look at this psalm because we

must remember these are lyrics and this

is a song that was written unto God for

us to learn from today. Now the other

thing about the word of God is that uh

we talk about reading the Bible but

really the Bible reads us.

The Bible reads us. What do I mean by

that? The truth that we find in the

scriptures actually comes to examine us.

When we consider the words of God and

the truths of God, it actually looks

deep into our hearts. We'll talk about

our hearts today. Looks deep into our

souls and examines who we are. So, we

must do that as well as we approach

the word of God today. As we read Psalm

98,

let it meet you where you are right now.

You know where you are and God knows

where you are. And to the extent that

you have shared with others, they may

know where you are as well. But ask

yourself these questions. How am I doing

in this season of life? Even today, how

am I feeling deep down in my heart?

What are my thoughts? What are my what

are my dreams? What fears occupy my mind

at this moment? What is bringing me joy?

What is troubling me? What have I

brought today that feels heavy?

What am I unsure of?

And so when we come to God, when we come

to his word, we also bring those things

in honesty before God.

And and God speaks to us through his

word.

My kids tell me, they say, "Daddy, you

preach two sermons when you preach."

That was the first one. So, thanks for

bearing with me, but I want us to take

time really to have our hearts prepared

to hear from the word of God. Let's

pray. God, we thank you that we can

gather here today for worship

of you and to hear from your word. Some

of us have joyful hearts like we talked

about, like I talked about just now. We

feel elated today. We are happy. We're

joyful. But some of us, if we're honest

and someone asks, "How are we doing?" We

would say, "Actually, I'm not doing that

great. I'm hurting or I'm full of

sorrow."

Some of us might feel a sense of peace.

We feel like we're in a good place.

Things are okay. And some of us are

actually weary. We're tired. We're

exhausted mentally, physically, maybe

even spiritually. We have questions,

doubts perhaps.

Some of us may feel safe.

Others may feel or be experiencing a

sense of dread or fear.

So, however we come today, we know that

you have created us. We believe that you

know our hearts. And so, we ask God,

would you meet us in your word? Would

you meet us in this place?

The reality is we just sang is that we

need you. We need to hear from you. We

need to know, be reminded that you are

God, that you are good, that you love

this beautiful yet broken world and

you're working in ways that we may not

even see fully. So, please open our

hearts to all of this.

Help our minds to be wrapped around your

truth to grasp it. Speak to us.

Help us know your truth within us. We

pray this in your holy name, Lord Jesus.

Amen.

I'm going to read Psalm 98 to us

and we'll refer back to it. It's not a

very long psalm, but there is there's

much here to be gleaned and we will do

that. This is the word of God. Psalm 98.

Oh, sing to the Lord a new song, for he

has done marvelous things.

His right hand and his holy arm have

worked salvation for him. The Lord has

made known his salvation. He has

revealed his righteousness in the sight

of the nations.

He has remembered his steadfast love and

faithfulness to the house of Israel. All

the ends of the earth have seen the

salvation of our God. Make a joyful

noise to the Lord, all the earth. Break

forth into joyous song and sing praises.

Sing praises to the Lord with the liar,

with the liar and the sound of melody,

with trumpets and the sound of the horn.

Make a joyful noise before the King, the

Lord.

Let the sea roar

and all that fills it, the world and

those who dwell in it. The rivers, let

the rivers clap their hands. Let the

hills sing for joy together before the

Lord. For he comes to judge the earth.

He will judge the world with

righteousness and the peoples with

equity. This is the word of the Lord.

Do you have a favorite song?

Do you have a favorite song? A song that

you just love to listen to if you're in

the car by yourself. You put it on and

maybe you play it again and again. Maybe

you listen to it on the train, on your

way to work,

on your way to school. you just love the

song.

Have you ever stopped to think about

what is it? Sort of analyze what is it

that I like about this song?

Is it is it the music?

Is it the the rhythm?

Is it the lyrics? Is it what the song is

about? Is it the composition? Maybe

you're very technical and you think,

"Wow, what a what a beautiful song. the

way it elevates and then you know calms

down but then it gets fast again. I

don't know what what is it right? What

is it about that song

that moves you that makes you experience

some emotion that then becomes to you

something that you cherish something

that you like.

So in this psalm,

something has really moved the psalmist

and it's God.

It's creation. It's God's work.

Now, we know the author of many psalms.

If you look in the Bible, you'll often

see that it's attributed

to an author that God worked through.

So, King David wrote many psalms.

There's a a group called the the Sons of

Kora

that wrote many psalms. There are other

psalms attributed to other authors that

God worked through to bring his word

about, but not this psalm. We don't know

who wrote this psalm, but we do know

from the lyrics that God has revealed

himself to this person in a powerful way

through his actions and his character in

his word.

And we see that this psalmist is moved

was moved to write this down and to sing

out and to encourage and to admonish or

to charge us if you will to sing out as

well.

Sing to the Lord a new song, a new song.

This writer's heart was changed. This

life was you know changed by an

encounter with their creator with God.

God made his salvation known

and it led to a new life. It led to a

new song. It led to praise and worship

of God.

I'm going to point to uh two

contemporary artists

to show how that happens

in today's time. One is a singer

songwriter that's a friend of ours,

Jason Herod. Another is a English poet,

an English an a living English poet that

uh I think there's a line in both of

these songs and in this poem that

captures a bit of what we're talking

about. Let me let me uh show this to

you.

Jason Herod sings this. And there are

Thai translations for these. Male might

have a little bit better nuance.

So you can listen to Mel as she

translates this. But the English says

this in Jason Herod's song and it's

called living song. He says it's kind of

a bluesy song. So he kind of sings I got

which is not correct English. It's I

have

but I got a living song deep in my soul.

He sings that again. I got a living song

deep in my soul. I got a song so deep,

but it's not mine to keep, so I let go.

So, Herod is singing, Jason is singing

about a song. He's personifying or he's

he's elevating this this song that's

inside of him. And he's got to let it

out. He's got to sing out this song in

his soul that he cannot contain.

And so, he says, "It's not mine to keep.

I can't keep it. And he sings it out.

There's a line in this poem by Malcolm

Gite, English poet, um that speaks to

this as well in a way about music and

about song.

It's called Oencia

Sapiensia

Malcolm Gite. I'll read it to us. I

cannot think unless I have been thought.

Nor can I speak unless I have been

spoken. I cannot teach except as I am

taught or break the bread except as I am

broken.

Oh mind behind the mind through which I

seek. Oh light within the light by which

I see. Oh word beneath the words with

which I speak.

Oh founding unfound wisdom finding me.

Oh sounding song whose depth is sounding

me. Oh memory of time reminding me. My

ground of being always grounding me. My

maker's bounding line defining me. Come

hidden wisdom. Come with all you bring.

Come to me now disguised as everything.

In the same way that Jason Herod had to

sing out a song that was placed and deep

in his heart, poet Malcolm Gite writes

of this song

capitalized

God that is searching and reaching down

into his very soul. The sounding song

whose depth is sounding me.

When we read Psalm 98,

we see from this psalmist

that they have to sing out. That is the

response

about the marvelous things they write

that God has done.

the character of God,

the faithful and mighty God, a God of

steadfast love, a God of faithfulness,

a God that has brought salvation,

a God that saves,

a God that rescues.

The language describes how God has given

the nation of Israel victory over their

enemies.

Not through their own power,

but through the power and might of God.

God has worked his salvation. And the

psalmist writes that God has made known

his salvation.

He's made it known. He's revealed his

righteousness to the nations.

In Romans

in the first chapter, the apostle Paul

also writes about revelation.

He writes this, "For the wrath of God is

revealed from heaven against all

ungodliness and unrighteousness of men

who by their unrighteousness suppress

the truth. For what can be known about

God is plain to them because God has

shown it to them. For his invisible

attributes, namely his eternal power and

divine nature, have been clearly

perceived

ever since the creation of the world in

these things that have been made.

So they are without excuse.

For although they knew God, they did not

honor him as God or give thanks to him,

but they became futile in their thinking

and their foolish hearts were darkened.

So, the Apostle Paul is writing about

mankind's sinfulness

in light of God's revelation that we

just talked about in the Psalm, Psalm

98, God's revelation of his salvation

unto the nations.

Now, we'll speak about this more later,

but suffice to say that God's revelation

of himself has been made known to the

nations. The psalm is speaking of it.

The Apostle Paul is writing and

referencing this truth.

He's made known his salvation. He's made

known his righteousness, his holiness.

Made known unto mankind. Made known unto

us.

It's the sounding song, you might say,

that Malcolm Guide is writing about

probing the depths of our hearts. It's

that sense that we as humans have down

in our hearts of something more.

God reveals himself

through his creation.

God reveals himself through his eternal

All of this made known and by the work

of the Holy Spirit of God.

So, we're going to go back to the psalm

now.

As we continue reading this,

the psalmist highlights God's powerful

rule and reign. How

God is shown as the king.

He's the king.

He rules over all things.

His unfolding plan is good and true.

God has worked and is working his

salvation unto this world.

So we are called to praise him for his

work. His work in us, his work in this

world and throughout history, throughout

time.

He is the king.

The psalmist turns to show utmost praise

of God's creation unto God. Not only do

humans

have this song stirred up within them

and worship their creator, but here the

psalmist animates all of creation. Look,

the rivers clapping their hands, the

hills singing out for joy.

Humankind was created in the image of

God to know God. And like the psalmist

here, when we come to know our creator,

when we see the marvelous things that

God has done, we can't help but respond.

We sing out. We call out. We cry out. We

acknowledge

the lordship and the kingship of our

creator.

The psalm, it concludes, it's not very

long. It concludes with a look to God's

promises for the future. Do you see that

the king is ruling and the king will

come again? Coming to judge. The king

will judge. Jesus will judge with

righteousness

and is coming to establish his eternal

rule and kingdom.

When this psalm was written,

the people of God

were still waiting. The promised one of

God, the Messiah,

the one that would come, the savior that

would come, that God had promised to

save his people. They were awaiting. And

yet, we read here of God's salvation. We

read here of God's salvation being

revealed and shown to the nations. And

yet they're waiting.

God had revealed his saving hand. And he

would work in a powerful way to provide

deliverance

from mankind's greatest enemy,

sin and death.

So this psalm points to the future

in two ways.

One, it tells of God's coming salvation

to be known through the saving work of

Jesus Christ. It points also to when

Jesus will come again, judging the

world. Other parts of the Bible talk

about Jesus will be the judge

judging the world in righteousness and

setting up his eternal kingdom.

How though?

How how would God bring salvation to

darkened hearts that mentioned here in

Romans to darkened hearts? How would God

rescue those that suppress the knowledge

of God?

How would God save those that turn their

hearts away from God?

How would God do that?

In second Corinthians, we'll look at a

couple of passages in chapter 5.

Actually,

the Apostle Paul writing again wrote

this.

God made him talking about Jesus here.

God made him who had no sin

to be sin

for us

so that in him in Jesus we might become

the righteousness of God.

This is how Jesus or how God father

would would bring his salvation about

conquering death. Jesus

and his atoning sacrificial death for

us. That is how God brought final and

everlasting rescue. This is how God

would reveal and bring salvation. How he

conquered sin and death once and for

all. Our sin

was placed on Jesus.

He died in our place so that we would

know the mercy,

the forgiveness,

the grace,

and see the righteousness of God.

Friends, when we turn

from our sin, from our death unto our

creator God, and confess that Jesus is

Lord

and God,

a new song, this new song that the

psalmist is writing about is stirred up

within us.

It's stirred up within us. Jesus brings

this new life and he puts this new song

in our hearts. A song of worship, a song

of praise, a song of all the marvelous

things that God has done. This is the

song that we sing now

and it's the song that we will sing

forever more as new creations in and

through Jesus Christ.

Earlier in chapter five, Paul wrote

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ,

this person is a new creation.

The old has passed away and the new, the

new has come.

this new song,

this new heart,

singing out unto God.

In Psalm 40, another psalm, we also sing

and read of this new song. He put a new

song in my mouth,

a song of praise to our God. Many will

see and fear.

This fear has to do with reverence and

respect and honoring of God. Many will

see and fear and put their trust

in the Lord.

You see how the Bible so beautifully

woven together. We're looking at Old

Testament, New Testament

prophecy, looking ahead to Jesus and the

salvation to be known through him.

So

the question each week when we look at

the word of God and when we study the

scriptures is how do we take these

truths and how do we allow them to be

placed on to read our hearts right to

apply them to our own hearts now it's

clear that the admonition here in this

psalm is to sing out to praise God you

know our theology informs and it leads

our doxology

what does that

Theology seeking to understand and to

know God that leads to doxology to

praise unto and worship of God.

That's the rightful response.

When we come to know who God is, what

God has done, we see it,

we experience it, and our hearts then

turn in praise and we worship. We

worship God. We worship the Lord with

our lives. We worship the Lord as the

gathered church, as God's people.

We worship

and worship is about God.

It's not performative.

It's formative.

It's not performing like singing as a

show unto others of a great voice. and

that's wonderful.

Or maybe you feel like I I don't feel

like I have a great voice. You know

what? That's okay.

Sing a new song. You are ad admonished

to sing, encouraged to sing. Worship,

corporate worship, worship unto God is

not performative.

It's formative. Meaning

God is working in us,

shaping us, forming us.

as a community, as his church, as a

people, and our individual hearts as he

works in our lives.

God is revealing his work. He's helping

us. He's helping us. He's leading us to

worship. So, we sing out.

We praise God together. When we worship,

we join together as as one body, as one

community with one voice, one

expression, one body. That's why

sometimes we stand together. Sometimes

we we may lift our hands in worship of

God together. Sometimes we sit in awe of

who God is and we actually listen or we

just read the lyrics of what's being

sung and allow it to minister to our

hearts. When we sing, we profess to one

another the truths that we hold to.

When we hear the person next to us

singing, we may be reminded that God has

revealed himself and has brought us

together as his church.

When we see others joining in worship of

God, when we see heads bowed, when we

read lyrics that are being sung, when we

see arms raised, when we see hands open

to receive what God is impressing upon a

heart, or we even see someone, as I

said, sitting quietly,

just listening, or just reflecting on

the word of God, we use our voices, we

use our bodies, we use these instruments

that were even listed here. Not just the

liar,

but we use and and horns, which might be

kind of cool one Sunday, but instruments

and the instrument that God has given us

as well, our voices. We sing out.

God has allowed humans uh

to know him.

God has worked that we uh would

understand being seeing himself you know

his his truth revealed to us

and he allows us to come and and know

him and worship him. That's our

response. All this is from God and all

this is unto and for God.

There's a beautiful passage in the book

of Zephaniah in the Old Testament.

The Lord your God

is in your midst,

a mighty one who will save.

He will rejoice over you with gladness.

He will quiet you by his love.

He will exalt over you

with loud singing.

How profound

is it that our creator, that our God

rejoices over broken and sinful people.

How beautiful that God has made his

salvation known to this world and that

there's a song of repentance and a song

of praise that is stirred up within us

as we turn to faith in God and look to

Jesus as our savior

and we rest in him.

This is the song of our hearts

and we're called to sing it out unto

God.

years ago, I spent some time around a

family for a summer. I was working at a

retreat center

and there was a family that had a number

of children

and one of their sons had been born with

a number of physical and mental

challenges.

He was confined to a wheelchair and he

would be for his lifetime.

He wasn't able to speak.

He had limited cognitive ability

and limited ability to move his body

or to even communicate in any way.

And so for most of the time he would sit

with a restful quiet expression on his

face.

But when anyone from his family would

call out his name and they would they

would speak loudly so he could hear,

whenever they would call out his name,

he would this broad smile this big smile

would come across his face.

And sometimes, not always, but sometimes

he would utter a sound, some something

from within him that was a response.

It wasn't any language. It wasn't words

that we could understand,

but it was something coming from within

him.

It was a response to love.

It was a response to being known and

loved.

Friends, God has created you in his

image.

He's placed a song in your heart that

you were made to sing out.

Sing out that song

as you live in and by his grace.

Let's pray.

God, we thank you for your work

in our hearts, in our lives, in this

world. We thank you that even though

this world is broken and hurting, you

are working into it.

We thank you that for the we just thank

you for the way that you stir hearts up

to know you and to praise you.

And we pray that you would do this more

around us with our friends,

with our colleagues, with our neighbors,

with people that we know and love that

that do not not yet know you in this

way. We pray that you would help us to

trust in your good and ongoing work and

your timing and your pace and the way

that you reveal yourself.

Help us trust in that.

Help us to be a people that worship you

as we ought.

Help us to sing out. Help us also to

love and care for those around us

in your name and by your strength.

And it's in your name that we pray, Lord

Jesus. Amen.

","":"
["GET
