so today we're going to be looking at<\/p>\n
uh psalm 55<\/p>\n
psalm 55 and the title of our sermon<\/p>\n
is silence<\/p>\n
group<\/p>\n
um there's a verse in lamentations<\/p>\n
chapter 3 verse 44<\/p>\n
which says you have covered yourself<\/p>\n
with a cloud<\/p>\n
so that no prayer can<\/p>\n
you know i have three teenagers in my<\/p>\n
house<\/p>\n
and they nearly always have some kind of<\/p>\n
headphone<\/p>\n
air pods something stuck in their ears<\/p>\n
and it's very frustrating when<\/p>\n
i or my or my wife are trying to get<\/p>\n
their attention<\/p>\n
and sometimes it can feel like that when<\/p>\n
we pray<\/p>\n
for me<\/p>\n
and sometimes we think that god should<\/p>\n
be like a genie<\/p>\n
or he should be like nest cafe and give<\/p>\n
instant answers to our prayers<\/p>\n
and in psalm 55 david is in a very<\/p>\n
he has very many problems but it seems<\/p>\n
like god<\/p>\n
has his headphones on come on<\/p>\n
and david is facing problems which are<\/p>\n
growing all of the time<\/p>\n
with no end in sight and god is nowhere<\/p>\n
to be found<\/p>\n
[Music]<\/p>\n
listen to my prayer oh god do not ignore<\/p>\n
my plea<\/p>\n
hear me and answer me my thoughts<\/p>\n
trouble me and i<\/p>\n
am distraught because of what my enemy<\/p>\n
is saying<\/p>\n
because of the threats of the wicked for<\/p>\n
they bring down<\/p>\n
suffering on me and to seal me in their<\/p>\n
anger<\/p>\n
my heart is in anguish within me<\/p>\n
the terrors of death have fallen in me<\/p>\n
fear and trembling have beset me<\/p>\n
horror has overwhelmed me<\/p>\n
i said oh that i had the wings of a dove<\/p>\n
that i could fly away<\/p>\n
and be at rest<\/p>\n
i would flee far away and stay in the<\/p>\n
desert<\/p>\n
i would hurry to my place of shelter<\/p>\n
far from the tempest and storm<\/p>\n
lord confuse the wicked confound their<\/p>\n
words<\/p>\n
for i see violence and strife in the<\/p>\n
city<\/p>\n
day and night they prowl about on its<\/p>\n
walls<\/p>\n
malice and abuses are within it<\/p>\n
destructive forces are at work in the<\/p>\n
threats and lies never leave<\/p>\n
its streets if an enemy<\/p>\n
were insulting me i could endure it<\/p>\n
if a fool were rising against me i could<\/p>\n
hide<\/p>\n
but it is you a man like myself<\/p>\n
my companion my close friend with whom i<\/p>\n
once enjoyed sweet fellowship<\/p>\n
at the house of god as we walked about<\/p>\n
among the worshippers<\/p>\n
let death take my enemies by surprise<\/p>\n
let them go down alive to the realm of<\/p>\n
the dead for evil finds lodging among<\/p>\n
them<\/p>\n
as for me i call to god<\/p>\n
and the lord saves me evening<\/p>\n
morning and noon i cry out in distress<\/p>\n
and he hears my voice he rescues me<\/p>\n
unharmed<\/p>\n
from the battle waged against me even<\/p>\n
though many oppose me<\/p>\n
god who is enthroned of old who does not<\/p>\n
change he will hear them and humble them<\/p>\n
because they have no fear of god<\/p>\n
my companion attacks his friends<\/p>\n
he violates his covenant his talk is<\/p>\n
smooth as<\/p>\n
butter but war is in his heart<\/p>\n
his words are more soothing than oil yet<\/p>\n
they are drawn swords<\/p>\n
cast your cares on the lord and he will<\/p>\n
sustain you<\/p>\n
he will never let the righteous be<\/p>\n
shaken<\/p>\n
but you god will bring down the wicked<\/p>\n
into the pit of decay<\/p>\n
the blood thirsty and deceitful will not<\/p>\n
live out half their days<\/p>\n
amen<\/p>\n
foreign<\/p>\n
in verses one to three we see that<\/p>\n
david is crying out but god is silent<\/p>\n
nothing when he coming in because<\/p>\n
and he's probably as we see in verse one<\/p>\n
he's probably been praying for some time<\/p>\n
but there's been no change for the<\/p>\n
better that coming male i did you got<\/p>\n
good<\/p>\n
it's exactly like before when he quite<\/p>\n
good couldn't pan<\/p>\n
out and so he begins his psalm by asking<\/p>\n
god<\/p>\n
to listen<\/p>\n
he's saying please don't ignore me<\/p>\n
listen and answer<\/p>\n
and in verse two we can see that he has<\/p>\n
no peace of mind<\/p>\n
his thoughts are troubling him<\/p>\n
continuously this is not something<\/p>\n
he can just say oh it doesn't matter<\/p>\n
and in verse 3 he he says about this<\/p>\n
escalating problem that is happening in<\/p>\n
his life<\/p>\n
first we see that people are saying<\/p>\n
things against him<\/p>\n
and then it escalates and it's up to<\/p>\n
they're giving him threats<\/p>\n
and then they're actually bringing some<\/p>\n
kind of suffering<\/p>\n
upon him<\/p>\n
and finally it's a physical attack<\/p>\n
they're wanting to fight him<\/p>\n
they're in anger against him<\/p>\n
it's something that starts quite small<\/p>\n
but it ends up in war<\/p>\n
god love that thing he let me be a<\/p>\n
lesbian<\/p>\n
you know and maybe i don't know about<\/p>\n
you but if it's a small problem we think<\/p>\n
i maybe don't need to bother god about<\/p>\n
this i can handle it myself<\/p>\n
but this problem that david's facing<\/p>\n
it's out of control<\/p>\n
maybe it started with a disagreement<\/p>\n
with another group of people<\/p>\n
but now there's a group of enemies and<\/p>\n
they are after him and they are<\/p>\n
relentless<\/p>\n
and so david turns to god and god is<\/p>\n
silent<\/p>\n
because<\/p>\n
and this is why david is in such<\/p>\n
distress you can hear the emotion<\/p>\n
in his voice as he sings this song<\/p>\n
as you see david is facing the fight of<\/p>\n
we don't know when this happened in his<\/p>\n
life<\/p>\n
uh the details are too vague lala yet<\/p>\n
mikhail's had thing<\/p>\n
but what we do know is that everything<\/p>\n
has fallen apart he has lost<\/p>\n
all authority he's on the run the thing<\/p>\n
you know part of the crime<\/p>\n
this is not the sunday school story that<\/p>\n
the kids have heard about david with his<\/p>\n
slang and<\/p>\n
he's going to defeat goliath<\/p>\n
this is david versus the world and<\/p>\n
david's losing<\/p>\n
hair and it's not just that he has a<\/p>\n
gang of enemies<\/p>\n
that hit him and want to kill him one of<\/p>\n
his best friends his companion<\/p>\n
has turned against him<\/p>\n
so he's got his enemies on one side he's<\/p>\n
got his friend on the other side who's<\/p>\n
betrayed him<\/p>\n
and then he turns to god and god is<\/p>\n
wouldn't happen<\/p>\n
what are the pressures that david's<\/p>\n
facing the first pressure that he's<\/p>\n
facing<\/p>\n
in verse nine is a wickedness that<\/p>\n
cannot be<\/p>\n
stopped singing<\/p>\n
out loud<\/p>\n
there is violence there is strife<\/p>\n
there are people running about in the<\/p>\n
streets doing whatever they want<\/p>\n
me<\/p>\n
uh then the second thing that we see is<\/p>\n
we see that there<\/p>\n
is he's lost control of jerusalem law<\/p>\n
and order have broken down and<\/p>\n
corruption is rampant<\/p>\n
and then the third thing that we see in<\/p>\n
verses 13 to 14 and<\/p>\n
20 to 21 is betrayal he's been betrayed<\/p>\n
by a close friend<\/p>\n
who's turned away from david and away<\/p>\n
from god lenny carsick sounds simple<\/p>\n
to her<\/p>\n
so we've got evil out of control we've<\/p>\n
got corruption violence strife<\/p>\n
fighting and then we've got a friend<\/p>\n
who's turned away<\/p>\n
to evil and has become an enemy<\/p>\n
he says my heart is in anguish within me<\/p>\n
the terrors of death have fallen me<\/p>\n
fear and trembling have beset me i said<\/p>\n
oh that i<\/p>\n
am sorry that's okay<\/p>\n
quite<\/p>\n
so he just finds that he has no<\/p>\n
sleep he has no rest there's just<\/p>\n
problems<\/p>\n
you can almost sense people running into<\/p>\n
david telling him about the next thing<\/p>\n
that's happened the next thing that's<\/p>\n
happened<\/p>\n
and everything is out of control<\/p>\n
in<\/p>\n
i mean i'm sure you've experienced a<\/p>\n
situation whether it's a deadline or<\/p>\n
or there's a massive problem at your<\/p>\n
work and and there's<\/p>\n
and there's something that has to happen<\/p>\n
and and it's not going to take place and<\/p>\n
you're under such<\/p>\n
pressure that you can't eat or you're<\/p>\n
overeating<\/p>\n
sometimes<\/p>\n
the first time i ever preached in my<\/p>\n
home church there was about 300 people<\/p>\n
and i was only 17 and i stood up<\/p>\n
to preach and i beforehand i was so<\/p>\n
nervous<\/p>\n
that i went out to the the restroom and<\/p>\n
i was<\/p>\n
physically sick and i was literally<\/p>\n
trembling my hands were trembling so<\/p>\n
much<\/p>\n
that i knocked the sermon notes off the<\/p>\n
pulpit and down<\/p>\n
where the organ was because i was just<\/p>\n
feeling so physically drained<\/p>\n
now<\/p>\n
so that's the first thing he feels he<\/p>\n
feels under great great<\/p>\n
pressure from his problems the second<\/p>\n
thing that he feels is<\/p>\n
he wants to run away<\/p>\n
you know this has become a phrase in<\/p>\n
everyday english<\/p>\n
on the wings of a dove means to you know<\/p>\n
to try and get away to go away somewhere<\/p>\n
and of course it comes from the fact<\/p>\n
that i have pigeons<\/p>\n
at my house as many people in bangkok do<\/p>\n
nowadays<\/p>\n
and you want to try and get rid of them<\/p>\n
but if there's a loud noise<\/p>\n
they they all immediately fly away as<\/p>\n
soon as there's danger they fly away and<\/p>\n
david's saying<\/p>\n
look i've got danger all around me and i<\/p>\n
want to<\/p>\n
i want to fly away just like a bird like<\/p>\n
one girl<\/p>\n
nope<\/p>\n
and nearly every week of course we see<\/p>\n
on the news or we read in the newspaper<\/p>\n
about there's been a crash and there's<\/p>\n
been a bus driver a train driver or a<\/p>\n
truck driver<\/p>\n
and they run away there's a big problem<\/p>\n
and they just try to run away from the<\/p>\n
problem<\/p>\n
but the problem is our problems<\/p>\n
eventually catch up with us<\/p>\n
our problems are very good at running no<\/p>\n
matter how hard we run<\/p>\n
they run faster that<\/p>\n
and the third response that david has is<\/p>\n
he runs<\/p>\n
to prayer it runs to god in prayer<\/p>\n
learning<\/p>\n
and these are three common responses i'm<\/p>\n
sure you're saying to yourself yes<\/p>\n
number one i've wanted to do that number<\/p>\n
two i wanted to do that<\/p>\n
number three i've wanted to do that it's<\/p>\n
it's very common david is speaking<\/p>\n
and we can all put our hands up and say<\/p>\n
yes i've been there<\/p>\n
i've done that i've got the t-shirt<\/p>\n
i have been singing<\/p>\n
and then thirdly we see what happens<\/p>\n
when confidence in god returns<\/p>\n
in verses 16 to 17 david gives a<\/p>\n
personal testimony he says<\/p>\n
as for me i call to god and the lord<\/p>\n
saves me<\/p>\n
evening morning and noon i cry out in<\/p>\n
distress<\/p>\n
and he hears my voice<\/p>\n
david says i believe that god does<\/p>\n
answer a prayer<\/p>\n
he's a god who saves he's a god who<\/p>\n
rescues<\/p>\n
so david is believing in god even though<\/p>\n
at the time he hasn't seen he's still in<\/p>\n
the in<\/p>\n
in facing problems but he believes that<\/p>\n
god will save him<\/p>\n
foreign so how can david believe this<\/p>\n
whenever<\/p>\n
god's been silent it's because in verse<\/p>\n
19 he says<\/p>\n
god who is enthroned from of old does<\/p>\n
not change he will hear them and humble<\/p>\n
because they have no fear and god god<\/p>\n
does not change<\/p>\n
our situations have all changed because<\/p>\n
of covet<\/p>\n
but god does not change<\/p>\n
summer god is not like david's friend<\/p>\n
who<\/p>\n
let him down who changed and became an<\/p>\n
enemy<\/p>\n
he's not like us<\/p>\n
i've let myself down many many times<\/p>\n
people around me have let me down my<\/p>\n
family has let me down<\/p>\n
love<\/p>\n
so in verse 22 god uh david gives us all<\/p>\n
advice<\/p>\n
he says cast your cares on the lord and<\/p>\n
he will sustain you<\/p>\n
uh uh<\/p>\n
and the these same words are rewritten<\/p>\n
in first peter chapter five verse seven<\/p>\n
care for you<\/p>\n
uh come in i'm calling you they put<\/p>\n
something<\/p>\n
what david realizes that god is not a<\/p>\n
god who plucks us away from our problems<\/p>\n
or he will not necessarily take our<\/p>\n
problems away<\/p>\n
lou open her up is actually become well<\/p>\n
what david find is that god gave him the<\/p>\n
strength<\/p>\n
to sustain him through his problems<\/p>\n
and we see that many times in psalm 23<\/p>\n
david says yeah do i walk through the<\/p>\n
valley of the shadow of death<\/p>\n
i will fear no evil<\/p>\n
it's not that god takes them out of the<\/p>\n
valley of death<\/p>\n
where god takes death out of the valley<\/p>\n
but god goes with him into the valley<\/p>\n
in the garden of gethsemane jesus had<\/p>\n
just been betrayed by one of his<\/p>\n
best friends<\/p>\n
his friends are deserting him and<\/p>\n
denying him<\/p>\n
the next day the whole of the jews will<\/p>\n
be<\/p>\n
assembled and they will with one voice<\/p>\n
he's going to go through great suffering<\/p>\n
this great suffering and be spat on<\/p>\n
and he's going to be nailed to a cross<\/p>\n
in front of a mob<\/p>\n
like<\/p>\n
as jesus cries out to god in the garden<\/p>\n
of gethsemane<\/p>\n
god does not take away the cup or take<\/p>\n
away his problems<\/p>\n
but god strengthens him to face the<\/p>\n
cross<\/p>\n
would get so many<\/p>\n
as jesus cast all of his cares on god<\/p>\n
his father he was sustained<\/p>\n
and god can and will sustain you<\/p>\n
through even the darkest valley<\/p>\n
yes sir<\/p>\n
don't know if your problems are going to<\/p>\n
be as big as king david's in this psalm<\/p>\n
later but when you're<\/p>\n
feeling depressed feeling oppressed by<\/p>\n
your problems<\/p>\n
do not hide them from god<\/p>\n
jesus said come to me all you who are<\/p>\n
heavy laden and i will give<\/p>\n
you rest<\/p>\n
secondly do not try and run away from<\/p>\n
instead ask god for grace for each<\/p>\n
moment<\/p>\n
until you see god's salvation<\/p>\n
mankind<\/p>\n
and then lastly cast your cares<\/p>\n
on the lord because he loves you<\/p>\n
so go out into bangkok this week<\/p>\n

knowing that god is the only one who can<\/p>\n
let's pray hello<\/p>\n
we want to thank you lord for your your<\/p>\n
grace<\/p>\n
your mercy towards us<\/p>\n
lord our father we want to thank you<\/p>\n
lord for your word<\/p>\n
that you come and you sustain us even<\/p>\n
through the toughest situation<\/p>\n
lord our father we do not know<\/p>\n
what will happen to us or to our<\/p>\n
families this week<\/p>\n
but we do know that you are the one who<\/p>\n
holds<\/p>\n
us in your hand and you are the one who<\/p>\n
can sustain us you are the one who can<\/p>\n
keep<\/p>\n
us and you are the one who will give us<\/p>\n
the strength for each<\/p>\n
day and each step darrow<\/p>\n
competes<\/p>\n
may you be with each one may you<\/p>\n
strengthen each one here<\/p>\n
