today we're going to be looking at

uh psalm 55

psalm 55 and the title of our sermon

is silence

group

um there's a verse in lamentations

chapter 3 verse 44

which says you have covered yourself

with a cloud

so that no prayer can

you know i have three teenagers in my

house

and they nearly always have some kind of

headphone

air pods something stuck in their ears

and it's very frustrating when

i or my or my wife are trying to get

their attention

and sometimes it can feel like that when

we pray

for me

and sometimes we think that god should

be like a genie

or he should be like nest cafe and give

instant answers to our prayers

and in psalm 55 david is in a very

he has very many problems but it seems

like god

has his headphones on come on

and david is facing problems which are

growing all of the time

with no end in sight and god is nowhere

to be found

[Music]

listen to my prayer oh god do not ignore

my plea

hear me and answer me my thoughts

trouble me and i

am distraught because of what my enemy

is saying

because of the threats of the wicked for

they bring down

suffering on me and to seal me in their

anger

my heart is in anguish within me

the terrors of death have fallen in me

fear and trembling have beset me

horror has overwhelmed me

i said oh that i had the wings of a dove

that i could fly away

and be at rest

i would flee far away and stay in the

desert

i would hurry to my place of shelter

far from the tempest and storm

lord confuse the wicked confound their

words

for i see violence and strife in the

city

day and night they prowl about on its

walls

malice and abuses are within it

destructive forces are at work in the

threats and lies never leave

its streets if an enemy

were insulting me i could endure it

if a fool were rising against me i could

hide

but it is you a man like myself

my companion my close friend with whom i

once enjoyed sweet fellowship

at the house of god as we walked about

among the worshippers

let death take my enemies by surprise

let them go down alive to the realm of

the dead for evil finds lodging among

them

as for me i call to god

and the lord saves me evening

morning and noon i cry out in distress

and he hears my voice he rescues me

unharmed

from the battle waged against me even

though many oppose me

god who is enthroned of old who does not

change he will hear them and humble them

because they have no fear of god

my companion attacks his friends

he violates his covenant his talk is

smooth as

butter but war is in his heart

his words are more soothing than oil yet

they are drawn swords

cast your cares on the lord and he will

sustain you

he will never let the righteous be

shaken

but you god will bring down the wicked

into the pit of decay

the blood thirsty and deceitful will not

live out half their days

amen

foreign

in verses one to three we see that

david is crying out but god is silent

nothing when he coming in because

and he's probably as we see in verse one

he's probably been praying for some time

but there's been no change for the

better that coming male i did you got

good

it's exactly like before when he quite

good couldn't pan

out and so he begins his psalm by asking

god

to listen

he's saying please don't ignore me

listen and answer

and in verse two we can see that he has

no peace of mind

his thoughts are troubling him

continuously this is not something

he can just say oh it doesn't matter

and in verse 3 he he says about this

escalating problem that is happening in

his life

first we see that people are saying

things against him

and then it escalates and it's up to

they're giving him threats

and then they're actually bringing some

kind of suffering

upon him

and finally it's a physical attack

they're wanting to fight him

they're in anger against him

it's something that starts quite small

but it ends up in war

god love that thing he let me be a

lesbian

you know and maybe i don't know about

you but if it's a small problem we think

i maybe don't need to bother god about

this i can handle it myself

but this problem that david's facing

it's out of control

maybe it started with a disagreement

with another group of people

but now there's a group of enemies and

they are after him and they are

relentless

and so david turns to god and god is

silent

because

and this is why david is in such

distress you can hear the emotion

in his voice as he sings this song

as you see david is facing the fight of

we don't know when this happened in his

life

uh the details are too vague lala yet

mikhail's had thing

but what we do know is that everything

has fallen apart he has lost

all authority he's on the run the thing

you know part of the crime

this is not the sunday school story that

the kids have heard about david with his

slang and

he's going to defeat goliath

this is david versus the world and

david's losing

hair and it's not just that he has a

gang of enemies

that hit him and want to kill him one of

his best friends his companion

has turned against him

so he's got his enemies on one side he's

got his friend on the other side who's

betrayed him

and then he turns to god and god is

wouldn't happen

what are the pressures that david's

facing the first pressure that he's

facing

in verse nine is a wickedness that

cannot be

stopped singing

out loud

there is violence there is strife

there are people running about in the

streets doing whatever they want

me

uh then the second thing that we see is

we see that there

is he's lost control of jerusalem law

and order have broken down and

corruption is rampant

and then the third thing that we see in

verses 13 to 14 and

20 to 21 is betrayal he's been betrayed

by a close friend

who's turned away from david and away

from god lenny carsick sounds simple

to her

so we've got evil out of control we've

got corruption violence strife

fighting and then we've got a friend

who's turned away

to evil and has become an enemy

he says my heart is in anguish within me

the terrors of death have fallen me

fear and trembling have beset me i said

oh that i

am sorry that's okay

quite

so he just finds that he has no

sleep he has no rest there's just

problems

you can almost sense people running into

david telling him about the next thing

that's happened the next thing that's

happened

and everything is out of control

in

i mean i'm sure you've experienced a

situation whether it's a deadline or

or there's a massive problem at your

work and and there's

and there's something that has to happen

and and it's not going to take place and

you're under such

pressure that you can't eat or you're

overeating

sometimes

the first time i ever preached in my

home church there was about 300 people

and i was only 17 and i stood up

to preach and i beforehand i was so

nervous

that i went out to the the restroom and

i was

physically sick and i was literally

trembling my hands were trembling so

much

that i knocked the sermon notes off the

pulpit and down

where the organ was because i was just

feeling so physically drained

now

so that's the first thing he feels he

feels under great great

pressure from his problems the second

thing that he feels is

he wants to run away

you know this has become a phrase in

everyday english

on the wings of a dove means to you know

to try and get away to go away somewhere

and of course it comes from the fact

that i have pigeons

at my house as many people in bangkok do

nowadays

and you want to try and get rid of them

but if there's a loud noise

they they all immediately fly away as

soon as there's danger they fly away and

david's saying

look i've got danger all around me and i

want to

i want to fly away just like a bird like

one girl

nope

and nearly every week of course we see

on the news or we read in the newspaper

about there's been a crash and there's

been a bus driver a train driver or a

truck driver

and they run away there's a big problem

and they just try to run away from the

problem

but the problem is our problems

eventually catch up with us

our problems are very good at running no

matter how hard we run

they run faster that

and the third response that david has is

he runs

to prayer it runs to god in prayer

learning

and these are three common responses i'm

sure you're saying to yourself yes

number one i've wanted to do that number

two i wanted to do that

number three i've wanted to do that it's

it's very common david is speaking

and we can all put our hands up and say

yes i've been there

i've done that i've got the t-shirt

i have been singing

and then thirdly we see what happens

when confidence in god returns

in verses 16 to 17 david gives a

personal testimony he says

as for me i call to god and the lord

saves me

evening morning and noon i cry out in

distress

and he hears my voice

david says i believe that god does

answer a prayer

he's a god who saves he's a god who

rescues

so david is believing in god even though

at the time he hasn't seen he's still in

the in

in facing problems but he believes that

god will save him

foreign so how can david believe this

whenever

god's been silent it's because in verse

19 he says

god who is enthroned from of old does

not change he will hear them and humble

because they have no fear and god god

does not change

our situations have all changed because

of covet

but god does not change

summer god is not like david's friend

who

let him down who changed and became an

enemy

he's not like us

i've let myself down many many times

people around me have let me down my

family has let me down

love

so in verse 22 god uh david gives us all

advice

he says cast your cares on the lord and

he will sustain you

uh uh

and the these same words are rewritten

in first peter chapter five verse seven

care for you

uh come in i'm calling you they put

something

what david realizes that god is not a

god who plucks us away from our problems

or he will not necessarily take our

problems away

lou open her up is actually become well

what david find is that god gave him the

strength

to sustain him through his problems

and we see that many times in psalm 23

david says yeah do i walk through the

valley of the shadow of death

i will fear no evil

it's not that god takes them out of the

valley of death

where god takes death out of the valley

but god goes with him into the valley

in the garden of gethsemane jesus had

just been betrayed by one of his

best friends

his friends are deserting him and

denying him

the next day the whole of the jews will

be

assembled and they will with one voice

he's going to go through great suffering

this great suffering and be spat on

and he's going to be nailed to a cross

in front of a mob

like

as jesus cries out to god in the garden

of gethsemane

god does not take away the cup or take

away his problems

but god strengthens him to face the

cross

would get so many

as jesus cast all of his cares on god

his father he was sustained

and god can and will sustain you

through even the darkest valley

yes sir

don't know if your problems are going to

be as big as king david's in this psalm

later but when you're

feeling depressed feeling oppressed by

your problems

do not hide them from god

jesus said come to me all you who are

heavy laden and i will give

you rest

secondly do not try and run away from

instead ask god for grace for each

moment

until you see god's salvation

mankind

and then lastly cast your cares

on the lord because he loves you

so go out into bangkok this week

go out into bangkok this week

knowing that god is the only one who can

let's pray hello

we want to thank you lord for your your

grace

your mercy towards us

lord our father we want to thank you

lord for your word

that you come and you sustain us even

through the toughest situation

lord our father we do not know

what will happen to us or to our

families this week

but we do know that you are the one who

holds

us in your hand and you are the one who

can sustain us you are the one who can

keep

us and you are the one who will give us

the strength for each

day and each step darrow

competes

may you be with each one may you

strengthen each one here

jesus let me pray
