would come to know the

god that created this world

and loves them

our text today is from the psalms

now this part of the bible the psalms

they're actually

songs

so these texts they were written to be

sung

and just as singing is so expressive

in the psalms we see the full range of

human

emotion

you might say that we see our own lives

and our hearts

on display in the psalms

you know we're in a time where we're all

experiencing

further challenges brought on by kevin

19.

suffering and hardship really have

always been a part

of what it means to be human

we experience great joy and wonderful

things

but we also experience great sorrow and

broken hearts

the psalms were written for times like

this

because they were written out of times

like this

times of joy and thankfulness yes

but times of anguish and of fear

so as you hear this psalm today as we

hear it read

allow it to meet us in our own lives

[Music]

god we thank you that that we can even

gather here for worship

that we can hear from your word the

bible

some of us have joyful hearts today

some of us feel safe and others may be

experiencing a sense

of dread or fear when called pilots

no matter how we feel today

god we ask that you would meet us here

meet us in the midst of these

circumstances

the reality is that we need you

we need to hear from you

all of

and that you love this beautiful yet

broken

world i'm not

please open our hearts and minds to your

truth today

speak to us we pray in your holy name

lord jesus

will read psalm 58

in thai and then we will read again in

english the text is on

the slides for us psalm 58 this is the

word

of god

my

psalm 58 do you indeed decree what is

right

you gods do you judge the children of

man

uprightly no

in your hearts you devise wrongs your

hands deal out

violence on the earth the wicked are

estranged

from the womb they go astray

from birth speaking lies they have venom

like

the venom of a serpent like the death

adder that stops its ear so that it does

not

hear the voice of the charmers or of the

cunning

enchanter oh god

break the teeth in their mouths tear out

the fangs of the young lions o lord

let them vanish like water that runs

away

when he aims as arrows let them be

blunted

let them be like the snail that

dissolves

into slime like this stillborn child who

never

sees the sun

sooner than your pots can feel the heat

of

thorns whether green or a blaze may he

sweep them away

the righteous will rejoice when he sees

the vengeance

he will bathe his feet in the blood of

the wicked

mankind will say surely there is a

reward for the righteous

surely there is a god who judges

on earth this is the word of god

have you ever had someone ask you a

question

and then before you can answer before

you can even get a word out the answer

for you

if you've ever experienced this it was

likely an unsettling situation

where were you last night young man and

don't you dare say

your room i know you sneaked out with

your friends

psalm 58 opens with a similar

do you out

do you decree what is right and do you

judge

rightly

essentially do you set forth laws and

rules

based in truth and right standing

judgment that follows and adheres to the

law

fair and true laws

this is the question posed in this first

verse

now various translations render the word

gods here as referring to leaders to

rulers

clearly it's addressing some in

positions of power and authority

i'm not do you rulers do you leaders

decree

what is right

the sharp reply that we read in verse 2

no you don't you don't mind

not only do you create wicked decrees

you act

unjustly and you sow injustice

you create false laws and you are unjust

in your judgments

unjust in your justice

league

in your hearts you devise wrongs and

with your own hands you deal out

violence

what a damning indictment upon the

rulers and leaders

we have here in this text

the next few verses three through five

they provide

further detail concerning these leaders

happening

their speech is punctuated with lies

they're full of poison

like the venom of a deadly snake you're

ready to strike

manga ready to deal out

violence having overrun their boundaries

you know these snakes it says they're

they're no longer controlled by the

snake charmer

but instead they're unbound dangerous

lethal

islam

as we talked about the psalms are songs

that

reveal the full nature of humanity

and here we see the evil of this world

exposed

the imagery we read in this psalm is

it's intense it's powerful

wicked rulers unjust leaders

unjust laws rampant in justice

these are the very conditions that led

david to cry out to god for saving

in this psalm and throughout the psalms

we see david and others cry out to god

for deliverance

they call out to god for help

david unleashes a harsh and impassioned

plea beginning in the sixth verse

god break the teeth in their mouths tear

out the fangs

of the lions

last sunday we read the psalm before

this psalm 57 together

also a psalm of david

in fact it seems these two psalms may

have been composed and used the same

tune

and in the 57th psalm david writes this

my soul is in the midst of lions i lie

down amid

fiery beasts the children of man whose

teeth

are spears and arrows

whose tongues are sharp swords

and then we read break their teeth oh

god tear out their things

take this threat away from me

david's prayer here is for god to thwart

the plans of the wicked to frustrate

their evil endeavors

i am reading on

in psalm 58 we see david

continue with creative metaphor and

analogies

let the evil intentions of the wicked

disappear like a snail

dissolving away

let the plans of the wicked die before

they even see the light of day.

david is looking for a way to describe

his deep desire for god to act

for god to rescue for god to exercise

judgment and justice

we cry for justice

we long for justice

humanity is crying out for help the

hearts

cry is for justice

certainly not unjust judgment false

justice

true justice

that is what the human heart cries out

for it's it's what we

know we need

friends the indictment the judgment that

that david

levied against the rulers and leaders in

this psalm

it's it's levied against all of us

indeed

you see we may desire true justice but

the problem is we're part of the

injustice

in the midst of injustice towards others

we stand by quietly while others suffer

so let this psalm ask of us

how do i devise

unjust decrees

how do i judge others unjustly

yes let us cry for justice but let us

examine our own hearts

the bible details a time when a prophet

named nathan came before king david

there were two men in a certain city one

had

great wealth and and one was poor me

the wealthy man had had many flocks and

herds but the poor man had

only one little lamb which he had bought

the man raised this little lamb and it

it grew up with him in his children

in fact in fact this lamb would would

eat off of his plate

this little lamb was like a daughter to

him

one day a traveler came to visit the

wealthy man

me condon chai holland and despite his

great wealth the man was

was unwilling to take one of his own

lambs to prepare

a meal for his guests

hiccups and what he did he actually took

the poor man's lamb from him

and had it prepared for the meal

the bible says when nathan finished this

story

it says that david's anger was kindled

up

and he burst out with this angry

response

no we they caught chad and he said the

man who did this

deserves to die

and the seventh verse of second samuel

chapter 12

reads what happens next

song nathan actually said to david david

you are that man

you see david had been sent by

god to king david

to expose his sinfulness

david had committed adultery with

a woman named bathsheba

bathsheba was another man's wife

david had seen her bathing on the roof

and he had lusted after her

now

and david from his position of power

and authority he had bathsheba brought

to

and he devised wickedness and he dealt

out

violence with his own hands

surely the righteous will be rewarded

david writes in verse 11.

surely mankind will say there is a god

who judges

him the teaching of the christian faith

is that there is a god who judges

that he's a fair and honest

but the verdict for our sin is not

one of flourishing but one of death

is

the bible describes the harsh reality

that the product of our own sin

and the sin of others is pain and

suffering

and death and destruction

nathan's story exposed david's

unrighteousness david's sinned

and he suffered and others suffered as a

result

of his sinful actions

so where is the hope in all of this

you might

in psalm 53 we read this

song god looks down from heaven on the

children

of man to see if there are any who

understand

who seek after god they have all fallen

together they have become corrupt there

is none

who does good not even one

friends the the good news of the gospel

is at first bad news

it's bad news to us because it exposes

what this psalm has exposed today

our unrighteousness

but the gospel is good news

because all the pain and suffering

and death that our sin justly

deserves was carried by jesus christ

to the cross

he died our death that we may have

life his life

on her own second corinthians chapter

5 verse 21 explains this

it

for our sake he made him

to be sin who knew no sin

so that in him we might become the

righteousness

from

in our helpless state we were

rescued by the love

and mercy of god

because jesus took on our own sin

and in him in him when we look to him

in faith

we know that that some of you may not be

sure of of what you think about

christianity

some of you may not be sure about what

you think about the claims of

jesus

some of you may have serious doubts and

and really good questions

and if you're honest you may not call

yourself

a christian young

and first of all i would say we are so

thankful that you're here

and we hope that you feel a warm welcome

today and that you

trust us to walk alongside you and in

your questions about all this about life

and faith

but i would say that the simplest way to

explain

the message of jesus

is that we are helpless to help

ourselves

you see the message of the bible is that

we're all like david

we're calling out for justice in the

world and missing the sin

in our own lives

jesus christ

to rescue you from yourself

pastor timothy keller has said this

cheer up you know you're actually worse

than you

think but at the same time

you are more loved in christ and more

accepted in him

than you could ever imagine or hope

yes we are more weak more

fallen more broken than we even know

extending his love and mercy to us

turn to him run

to him let's pray

god help us see help us see our deep

need of you today

help us understand just how weak we are

here god give us a nathan

in our own lives that will help us see

our sins

and then help us to confess our

brokenness before

we pray this in your holy name lord

come
