we're going to be

continuing our series in the songs

and as we've said before the songs are

the prayer book of the bible

they detail all aspects of the human

experience

and they do so as prayers to god

[Music]

fear joy grief hope gratitude

anger love they're all there in the

songs

and our text for today is psalm 59 uh

which is another song that's connected

to

david's life

but it also has very real implications

for our lives too

because what david is dealing with in

this psalm is something that

we all in one way or another will deal

with at some point in our lives

especially if you live in a city like

bangkok

what david is dealing with is serious

mistreatment and injustice

and the question of this psalm is what

do you do when you become the object of

serious mistreatment and injustice

and how do you deal with the anger and

frustration that comes from it

will be

um

um so if you if you spend enough time

around people

eventually at some point you'll find

yourself in a very similar situation

that david is in

china that is

becoming the object of serious

it's very unlikely that you'll have

people trying to literally kill you

like david did

however also like david it's more likely

that words may be said about you

for no apparent reason and oftentimes

those words can feel like a sword

piercing

some very important things to tell us

about how to handle mistreatment

and injustice as well as the anger that

comes from it

that's a

so first we're going to put the psalm in

its context

and then we're going to look at david's

response

why he can respond that way and how we

can respond that way

so the subheading of the psalm is

connected to yet another time

saul tries to kill david

in this case it's in first samuel 19 and

what happens is

prior to this incident david has slayed

the giant goliath and he's very popular

amongst the people and he's had a very

successful military career

the people are dancing and singing

praises about david and saul grows very

jealous

one day david's in saul's house and saw

hurls a spear

at david intending to kill him saul

misses david escapes

but that night saul sends his men to

david's own house

to watch it and to kill him in the

morning

i

david learns about this and in the

middle of the night he escapes from his

own house

david faces serious mistreatment and

injustice

for no fault of his own

so verses 103 tell us that they're after

his blood

and they lie and wait for him but he's

done nothing to deserve this

david is outnumbered and his very own

place of safety

his own home his own refuge is no longer

safe

that we command

you know how if you're at work or at

school and people are spreading rumors

about you

or you have a conflict with a co-worker

you know that once that clock hits 3 p.m

or 5 p.m or 7 p.m or whenever

you'll be free to go home

you can look forward to 5 p.m because

you know once the clock says it's time

to go home

you can go back to your friends and

family and rest

my club

david doesn't have that luxury because

for david his enemies have come to his

look at verses 3-6 they return that

evening snarling like dogs and prowl

about the city

david has no respite no physical place

of rest

and these men versus six to eight tell

us also hold a significant power

advantage

they know that david is powerless and

they know that he can't do anything

about the situation

that's why it says in verse 7 and they

think who can hear us

of course if you're talking loudly

snarling like dogs of course people are

going to hear you

you know what happened

what this verse reveals to us though is

the posture of heart

of these men

who can hear us is actually a boast

that's saying who can do anything about

us

in their own eyes they hold all the

power they believe that anything can be

accomplished by their numbers

they outnumber david and so they boast

that no one can do anything about them

so david is in a tough spot he's

outnumbered

his main place place of refuge is taken

from him

he's the object of serious mistreatment

and injustice

what does he do

to practice

david turns to god and asks for help

and this is not a general god help me

kind of prayer that we're used to

if we read closely we see that david is

angry

and that he's

yourself to punish all the nations show

no mercy to wicked traders

this isn't just a call for help it's a

call for vengeance

david has taken his case to god and he's

praying

he's appealing to god to punish the evil

evildoers

now the bible gives us a very nuanced

view of anger

that contrasts with our own cultures we

want anger

from

in our culture a lot of us do not

express our anger we say oh i'm not

i'm okay i'm a good person and good

people don't get angry

we stifle our anger and we deny it and

we pretend that it doesn't exist

and that actually puts us out of touch

with reality

because when we do that a root of

bitterness builds up in us

and anger slowly poisons us

or in john 11 where jesus is about to

raise lazarus from the dead

right next to where it says jesus wept

it also says he was moved with anger

one commentator tells us that he was

moved with anger

because of the destruction and the power

of the great enemy of humanity

death

so what the bible says is that it's

always wrong to deny your anger because

it leads to bitterness and will poison

you if you don't admit it

bro

look at jesus moved with fury when he

sees death

why is it okay for jesus to be angry

because his anger

because anger is energy directed when

something good is being threatened

long duty prayer

we should be angry when we see injustice

and we should be angry when good things

are being threatened

and if we're not it's because we're out

of touch with reality

and if we do not get angry when

something good is being attacked

we're not like god we're not like jesus

so david's angry at the injustice that

he's facing and his response is to pray

he takes his anger and his appeal for

justice and instead of taking it into

his own hands

he puts it in god's hands

this goes against what people in ancient

cultures would do

because back in those days as well as in

our time

when someone wrongs us we want to hurt

them back

home an eye for an

eye a tooth for a tooth that's how it

was back then

and that's how it is today

and this is not only with our actions we

can exact vengeance with our words and

our thoughts

when we deny our anger and we pretend it

isn't there we're being poisoned by it

because we think we know what the person

who wronged us

our own desire to be the judge and the

executioner

when we face injustice leads us to

harden our own hearts

towards those who harm us

upon

but see what david does he takes himself

out of the judge's seat

and he goes to god he doesn't let his

anger keep him away from god

his anger leads him to god and he

expresses his anger fully

i do nothing

verse 11 says do not kill them or my

people will forget

on the surface that seems very merciful

but what david is saying is for god to

extend his judgment over a long period

of time

so that people would see god's justice

death is too quick a punishment he's

praying for god to make an example out

of his enemies

and and it leads us to this question why

can david ask god for justice

why can he trust that god will exact

justice

foreign

so one reason david can respond this way

is because he knows that god is just

he trusts in god's ability to do

something about the situation

and david asking god for justice we see

that david is not overwhelmed

by the injustice surrounding him

his circumstances are terrible and yet

he says but you laugh at them lord

even though david david himself is

powerless

and is intimidated by the world god is

not

and david has seen god work in his life

before when he slayed goliath

when god saved him from saul in the past

so another reason david can respond to

this manner is because of his experience

he can say you are my strength you are

my fortress

my god on whom i can rely because he has

experienced god in the past

and he knows that god can do something

but the deeper reason that david can ask

god for justice is not just because he

believes that god

can do something about it

so the deeper reason that david can do

this

is because he believes that god has in

mind

his good that god will do something

about it because he cares for david

david believes something many of us

don't believe

david believes that god has his

well-being and heart and that's why

david can take

his case to god and say you do something

about it

david doesn't say consume them in my

wrath he says consume them in your wrath

because he believes that god cares for

him

he goes to the only person in the

universe who has the power to judge

and will someday make all things right

who has the knowledge to judge because

he truly knows what the person deserves

and who has the right to judge because

if any of us prayed

god let us all get what we deserve we

all would die

he's a croatian theologian and he says

something like this

miroslav

if you think believing in a god of

justice and judgment leads to violence

you've had a very comfortable life you

have never had your home burned

or friends or relatives raped or killed

the

he says i need to know that there is a

god who has the power to judge and has

the right to judge

because if i don't know that i will pick

up a sword and go kill them myself

if we do not know that god is just we

will be controlled by violence

and we will be controlled by revenge

but if we know that god is just it means

that we can seek justice

but not pain

our lives won't be distorted or

controlled by anger or violence

because we have brought our anger into

the presence of god

and this is what david does um

yeah verses 10 to 13 that aren't up

there um

yeah that's what david does he takes his

anger into god's presence and in doing

so he's free

there is no bitterness

look at verses 16-17 the tone has

completely shifted

david now sings of god's steadfast love

and strength

and even though he's still under attack

he praises god in his heart for being

his fortress and refuge

because david knows that god cares for

him david's able to give up his desire

to be the judge

he's able to turn to the true judge with

his anger

and to trust that justice will one day

come

home

so that's why david even as he's as he's

experiencing

all these bad things he can sing and

hide in god his fortress

now what does that mean for us

one of the ways the bible talks about

sin is that is it is a fundamental

distrust of the heart

it's a fundamental distrust that god

doesn't care

and as a result of this distrust we take

our lives into our own hands and we

decide

how to best live we decide what will

bring us the most happiness

if only i had that job or that

relationship

or if only i looked a certain way or

made that amount of money

then i would be happy

and when we live that way we are

especially sensitive

to bitterness because when what we value

the most is attacked

we won't be able to let go

we will not want justice we will only

want revenge

when we take our well-being into our own

hands

we become vulnerable and we won't be

able to handle injustice

it's only when we know that god has our

well-being at heart

and that god will bring justice can we

be equipped to handle injustice and

serious mistreatment

and both of those statements that god

has our well-being at heart and that

justice will come

there are actually two sides of the same

coin

if god isn't just if he doesn't get

angry at good

and wonderful things being threatened

and destroyed then there's no hope for

any of us who suffers

if god isn't just if god does not have

our

our well-being at heart we might as well

pick up the sword and get revenge

ourselves

but if god is just if he does get angry

at

injustice oppression and suffering and

if he does get angry at sin

then all hope is there for you and me if

he gives us

all what we deserve we won't be here

the garden of gethsemane jesus was

betrayed and arrested

it was an unjust trial that took place

at night

jesus was ambushed by a large crowd

armed with swords and clubs

nice one guess so many

fierce men conspired against jesus for

no

offense or sin of his own verse three he

had done no wrong

and that yet they are ready to attack

him verse four he was flogged

beaten spat upon and ultimately hung on

a cross to die

honduras

and later when jesus is on the cross and

as he's dying he says

father forgive them

forgive them what about the cost what

about justice does jesus not care about

anyone who's been wronged here knows

that there is a debt to be paid

that there's a cost and you can either

try to make

the person who wronged you pay the debt

or with extreme emotional difficulty you

can try to forgive them

the woman

but someone has to absorb the cost in

order to restore that relationship

and if it is that hard at the human

level think of how much harder

it is to absorb the cosmic cost of sin

the cost of all the evil and sin and

injustice of humanity

how is god going to reconcile to us

so verse 17 that i've highlighted in

hebrew it literally says

the god who shows me steadfast love

on the cross jesus experienced the

greatest injustice of all

jesus experienced mistreatment at the

ultimate level he was destroyed

for no fault of his own concern

but he voluntarily did it so that we

would know

that we can trust him and that justice

will come

he showed us steadfast love

he said

because jesus experienced the ultimate

injustice for you

when you face injustice and suffering

you know that you can trust the ultimate

judge to bring justice

you won't be destroyed by injustice and

mistreatment anymore

it'll still hurt it'll still be painful

but it won't destroy you

would and when we understand the gospel

we are able to not only handle injustice

but we're also able to love our enemies

when you're experiencing serious

mistreatment look to jesus and see him

experiencing injustice for you

look at the debt that he forgave you and

when you do that

and it's very hard work but when you do

that you'll be able to forgive others as

well

yes

it's only when you look at jesus and

seeing see him experiencing injustice

enduring mistreatment will you be able

to handle injustice without being

destroyed by it

and it's only through looking at jesus

and his resurrection will you know that

one day god's going to make all things

okay

father we pray that you would give us

what we need in order to love our

enemies

it is incredibly difficult god and yet

it's something that you call us to do

help us to look to you lord jesus to see

you not
